I came across some old threads in other forums and also articles where Catherine was being criticized for being lazy, dumb, overrated, a gold digger and called all sorts of names. There were even threads that questioned why people disliked her so much, and multiple pages of replies stating why she was so disliked. I am wondering why this seems to have now been forgotten, even if Meghan became the new media target, why is it hardly mentioned the amount of hate and vitriol that Catherine went through?

If I didn't like a famous person, the last thing on earth I would do is pick up one of their books in a bookshop and read it! Shock

But there we go... there's a couple of celebs I don't like. I don't read about them. I don't click on links about them. I don't go on threads about them. I basically don't give them headspace

And if she hadn't picked up the book and read it, you would be saying 'how can you criticise a book you haven't read?'

I agree with you that the media is over the top - they have their own agenda. Also some people on mumsnet are weirdly obsessed. However, all anybody on this thread has said is that they find them kind of annoying and not very talented. What's weird is the way you get offended by that. Do you know these people?

So, you like them. OK. They have a likable side. They make each other happy. They're spontaneous. They're more open about their feeling. That's fine. You're allowed to like them and I'm allowed to find them rather annoying.

Like with who? I have no idea what you're talking about.

There are no celebrity threads I go on and criticise those who I haven't got time for. Life's too short.

Look, I can do a row of 🤣🤣🤣🤣 too!

If she was’t married to Harry it would have ended up in the bin

And that’s my point - no it wouldn’t have. The difference to her marrying Harry is the level of publicity. The children’s book market is full of similar books - as someone who has read a fair few of them. Many people in the public eye seem to take a turn at them as a PP has said. There are some absolute bangers and then some where……the pictures are engaging. The issue was why writing one of those would be a source of ridicule? I have read some doozies - not once did I think to laugh at the author.

Howsimplywonderful · 27/07/2023 07:46

@Roussette

The Bench is about 17 pages long. It doesn’t take long to read. I was curious about it.

perhaps you should read it yourself, experience the joy first hand

Where did I say I hated Meghan? There was a lot of media coverage of it, I happened to see it on display when I had time to kill in a bookshop and it took me about 90 seconds to read.

She didn’t…..

He used the court sessions to talk quite a lot about how unhappy he's been and complain about the government

So did the other people in the case - he has a different perspective to others due to his previous role as a representative of the head of state therefore his comments about government were reasonable. It is alarming how enmeshed certain aspects of the press and government are. For me. It’s how in a cost of living crisis the obvious profligate spending by the current members of the RF is reported as being a net gain for the British public and how a British Prime Minister could blatantly lie in our faces repeatedly with barely a whisper of outrage for a full year.

You think it's reasonable for a member of the royal family to make public statements about government? OK 👌

I don’t hate Meghan.and Harry. But to steal the words of Logan Roy ‘They are not serious people’

I'm just not interested in childrens' books whoever wrote them!

i’ve kids and hate to see the shelves filled with kids books written by ‘celebrities’ I wish people with real writing skills got the chance.

Agree

The book was kinda cringey and bad but she wrote it for H/A so maybe it should’ve stayed private. Idk I find it kind of endearing 🤣

I totally agree. We certainly don’t allow any books written by celebrities on our school book shelves.

This just proves how well the media spin works and how fickle and gullible people are.

LadyMuckingabout · 27/07/2023 09:23

A pp was quite right: M&H have provided enough material to last generations, even if they go and live forever in a bunker.

To those complaining about this - what immediately comes to mind if someone mentions the Duke of Windsor? Yep, the Abdication and Wallis Simpson. They may have done thousands of charitable endeavours, but who knows or cares?

Back to M&H, I like the “They are not serious people.” Because they are not. There were too many highfalutin and pompous claims when they left. It’s all “representing” things, awards and fancy outfits with no substance.

This basically.

Netflix is still promoting their 6 part reality show, Spotify still has Archetypes. The interviews are all still available. Suits is now on Netflix.

The "near catastrophic car chase" in NYC was just weeks ago.

Things are still fresh in people's minds so they will be discussed.

I certainly don't hate them, I just find them a bit annoying, and certainly not "serious people". I view them now as celebrities - and the seem to Press treat them as such in the main.

Actually, I think Nazis

I'm not sure (and sorry, Hsw, if I'm misinterpreting you) but I think it's times when you've said people should read Spare or watch the Netflix documentary before commenting on them.

Lots of people can. And do. And "Lol".

I'm lost. What do you mean? Bearing in mind I haven't any idea if the book by Meghan is good or bad or whatever, so I haven't commented on it?

Lol and 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thats so interesting as a lot of people still remember Harry for his Nazi costume.

Yes. Before Wallis and the 1930s I think the Prince of Wales toured round and was popular in parts. The reason I say this is because a member of my family, born 1916, remembered him meeting miners in Wales. Forgive me if I have misremembered this. I'll google it later. Also, on my bookshelf I have a book which was given to one of my relatives in 1923 as a prize. It is The Prince of Wales' Eastern Book. He went on a journey to the Far East. The book is a pictorial record and it was produced and sold in aid of The Blinded Soldiers' and Sailors' Hostel at St. Dunstans'.
I am not writing this to defend him in any way, only to echo the thought that we immediately tend to think 'Wallis/abdication/Nazism', but he had several years of life before that.
John Betjeman wrote a poem about him stepping hatless from a plane.

LaMarschallin · 27/07/2023 11:31

Sorry, Roussette, I'm not sure I can explain myself any better than I have.
I suppose I was trying to say that I think sometimes you seem to expect higher standards from people here than you display yourself.

I was going to reply to another of your posts, so I'll stick it in here:

I'm just not interested in childrens' books whoever wrote them!

I'm quite the opposite, particularly since I acquired a grandchild.

There are still books I re-read that I loved as a child and old and new ones that I check out to see if I think the next generation would enjoy them.
I'm still trying to find a copy of "The Talking Parcel" by Gerald Durrell, so in a 2nd hand bookshop, the children's section is the first place I head!

It does mean that I flicked through Meghan's book when I saw it, purely to see if it matched up to the humorous review in the Tines (I know: that rag! What can I say? I like the crossword and it seems a waste not to read the rest).
It did match up.

Thanks for the acronym and the cartoons. I'm sure I'll find a use for them 😎💃👸💤

LaMarschallin · 27/07/2023 11:33

PS The end of my last post is just a random selection of emojis.
It probably means something horribly rude (I was very late to the aubergine). I didn't mean anything unpleasant by it, honestly.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 27/07/2023 11:34

I suppose I was trying to say that I think sometimes you seem to expect higher standards from people here than you display yourself.

This is so untrue and unnecessarily personal. Despite much goading @Roussette tries hard to be fair against quite unfair focus on her every word.
