H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

I probably give it as much thought as I do Kate and William dressing Louis and George in identical outfits to Harry at similar ages or Kate wearing outfits that look like Diana. I am guessing sometimes people wear things that have similar vibes to things other people wear and most of the time it has no real relevance.

I tend to be the same plus I have no interest in fashion so I don't study what people wear. However, the white coat and gloves outfit is a bit striking now it has been pointed out to me. If it was sending a message it went straight over my head but I don't suppose it was aimed at me.

Very, very interesting, @pintery .
Clothes and styling are most definitely a message, aren't they?

Yes, the anthropology of western clothing 20th-21st centuries is fascinating! Especially when broken down by class & cultures.

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:18

I read that the late Queen selected her brooches to send messages. I once followed a fascinating poster who "read" the brooches!
Colour, fit, style and accessories are always carefully selected by people in the public eye. There's always a message.

StartupRepair · 24/07/2023 10:19

I think it was David dramatically and impulsively announcing that he was abdicating that forced Wallis to stay with him.

I just assumed he would have told her - and she could have said 'wowa...not thanks, I'm off'. But maybe that's unrealistic and she felt trapped.

I wouldn't be surprised by this, after all they have to be so careful about what they say in public so finding a different method of expressing themselves would make sense.

But then don't you have an equal obligation to hear and listen from people who are telling you that the thoughts and feelings they're expressing are not about racism? Surely on these boards it's about mutual respect.

I find it interesting as part of an abused minority - I'm ginger or at least I was before mother nature solved the problem by turning my hair white. My husband is truly the Windrush Generation, he came here in 1948 and suffered many horrible instances of racism as a child and even more when he made the slightly mad decision to become the first black police officer in his force.

When we started going out he was offended by something someone said and we were talking about it and I said about abuse I'd had as a ginger. He scoffed but a few weeks later we were on a train when a group of teenagers started making fun of me, how ugly gingers are etc. He apologised for his previous dismissing of my experiences and said he wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it.

I don't know if ginger prejudice is less than it was but I can say it was pretty horrible and that's before we even get onto the freckles.

I suppose it is hard to know what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes unless we get to experience it with them.

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:23

@StartupRepair is right, Wallis was happy to be the mistress of the King.
I think "trapped" is right, @Wheresthebeach .

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:23

Your last sentence, @ancientgran - spot on 👍

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:25

Also, kudos to your husband for being the first black police officer.

The greatest example is Melissa McCarthy's cabbage hat. I used to love her. Not any more

I agree. And I think listening and believing what people are saying is a start. There are no horrible people on these boards, just people with strong opinions.

It seems the accepted view that Wallis didn't want the marriage, so why didn't she break it off and go back to the States?

I believe he threatened to kill himself if she left him, and she was convinced he meant it.
She certainly seems to have been still in love with her husband - wrote him friendly/loving letters when married to David and living in France.

When the young Charles visited the Windsors in Paris they apparently (according to the newspapers anyway) talked about the problems of being Prince of Wales, and the importance of having the right wife.
Do you think maybe Charles took it to heart, making possible the Diana fiasco?

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:41

How fascinating, @BadgerB . To have been a fly on that wall!

Wheresthebeach · 24/07/2023 10:42

@BadgerB How awful. It would explain the unhappy marriage, and her subsequent affairs.

Unfortunately he is written out of history. His force website shows someone else as the first black officer, maybe an asian guy seems more acceptable? I think it hurts more than he will admit but he suffered many many humiliations in his service so it is nothing new.

What?! That's terrible.
Unfortunately, I'm not surprised.

Millicentsparty · 24/07/2023 10:49

He was a clingy, controlling man who never gave her any space. But I don't have sympathy with her. Edward had a mistress, Thelma Furness, and he didnt look twice at Wallis. Then Thelma went away to the US to see family and Wallis moved in. She was a ruthless character.

Maireas · 24/07/2023 10:52

Yes, and he was a needy, self absorbed man child.

pintery · 24/07/2023 11:06

You think wearing a copy of a Wallis Simpson dress has no relevance to the Queen's jubilee?

She wore a dress. Likening it to Wallis Simpson is a daft reach.

It's almost exactly the same! Anyone with eyes can see that, M+H detractor or not. To deny it's a copy of the Wallis outfit is completely ridiculous.

Please link a pic because I haven't a clue which dress

The coat

Your never going to convince me one isn't a copy of the other.
The collar is slightly smaller, the buckle is the same, off center fastening, 3/4 sleeves, white gloves.

I'll challenge you to find me a picture of anyone in a similar outfit.

@pintery
I challenge you to tell me one isn't a copy of the other.

It's very unique not even a high fashion style.

I didn’t equate the dress with Wallis at first but I do recall being surprised she wore white after complaining that she had to wear bland colours . I would have expected her to wear a more vibrant colour .

Mylovelygreendress · 24/07/2023 11:13

I didn’t think the hat suited the outfit ( irrelevant I know)

Roussette · 24/07/2023 11:15

Good grief. The world's gone mad and how weird that this 'theory' was not done to death when posters were endlessly criticising her the day after. It was all about the collar and fit, no mention of Wallis!

I'll stick with my 'what a reach ' comment
