Grifters indeed! Can we have a lift Joe?

H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

I see on twitter people are laughing at Harry and Meghan because Harry has posted something about the importance of fathers. Neither now speak to their father despite being brought up single-handedly by them. Grifters indeed.

Factually incorrect.

Doria was not an absent mother, please don't repeat that disgusting lie here again. Its not true. Meghan had two loving parents growing up who shared custody.

Charles didn't raise his children alone, Diana was there until their teens and they had nannies and family who helped after she had died. Charles was barely around.

Here's the picture

There is also a very distinctive white coat and gloves combo that Meghan has copied from Wallace.

I think there are also others. She absolutely sees the parallels

Maireas · 23/07/2023 11:40

I wonder if that's just a coincidence, @MamoruHisaishi ? I always baulk at these inevitable comparisons of women's outfits, which is usually based on Diana! I don't think that Meghan would wish to base herself on Wallis, a pro Nazi, pro segregationist, anti democratic white woman.

Maireas · 23/07/2023 11:42

I genuinely don't see the parallels, and I certainly can't say if Meghan does. I think Dior provided that white outfit. It would seem unwise of Meghan to choose to identify with Wallis.

Meghan is an actress and therefore is very aware of the image she presents to the media so she would know how she would look and the parallels it would draw. There's the dramatic eye liner that she wore to the Oprah interview that she normally doesn't do but does evoke the diana interview, and the dress really has a distinct specific style that evokes Wallis otherwise people wouldn't have noticed. I mean how could it be a coincidence that her look seems to be a combination of two women who have shaken up the monarchy?

FloofCloud · 23/07/2023 11:46

I do also think she mirrors others with her clothing, but find it strange she thinks others do the same for her ... like Jill Biden and lemons ... I
Think if I was Jill and received a note and gift saying she was supporting me with her clothing I'd be horrified by the random connection .. very strange

Serenster · 23/07/2023 11:47

Personal attributes and politics aside, Wallis Simpson was a very stylish woman. I can imagine there is also a huge gulf between her reputation in the UK and her reputation in the US (and knowledge of her activities too!).

If (and it’s a big if) Meghan wanted to underscore her imagine as the American who married into the British Royal family I can see she might be broadly inspired by Wallis, knowing that for most of her audience, that comparison will only go so far? But that’s just speculation. As we all know, there’s only so many colours and styles, and two women who are publicly visible and photographed a lot will inevitably turn up in similar colours and styles. Particularly when some classic styles will always be repeated in fashion.

@Samcro @Iwantcakeeveryday - it's not nasty, it's my observations and life experience. Not everything is as people want it to appear!

and my take is that its nasty.

I genuinely don't see the parallels, and I certainly can't say if Meghan does. I think Dior provided that white outfit. It would seem unwise of Meghan to choose to identify with Wallis.

But if her purpose was to get under the queen’s skin, trying to evoke Wallis would certainly be one way to do it. Also, its not the first time Meghan has dressed similarly to other well known celebrities, she was dressing similarly to Ivanka Trump a few years back.

Maireas · 23/07/2023 11:53

I think that was odd, @FloofCloud , but maybe she was trying to forge a friendship with Dr Biden, and was flattered she'd chosen the same dress?
I can see what others are saying about Meghan's image and how she projects herself. It could be that she bases her image on Diana and Wallis because of their association. It could be that she doesn't know the extent of Wallis' connection to the Nazi regime, her behaviour in Europe and the Bahamas. Maybe it's just about image.

Some outfits possibly are coincidence others are definitely planned.
The white coat and gloves is far to distinctive for it to be coincidence.

I've obviously missed something...what's the link with Jill Biden, lemons and clothes??

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/07/2023 12:59

As a pair, E&W did not cover themselves in glory during the Nazi era, and Edward was nothing short of a traitor

So true, Maireas, and I've often wondered just how much of their rejection was really to do with her repeated divorces, and how much to the government's knowledge of their associations and sympathies

Seen from one POV Wallis could be regarded as a useful tool for getting rid of an undesirable king, but then it's widely said that Bertie (George) was considered unsuitable too and only "got the job" because the others brothers were felt to be even worse

I think they both fell in love.

They did indeed.
Harry with Meghan; and Meghan with a Prince and a title.

FloofCloud · 23/07/2023 13:09

@MrsFinkelstein - I saw it somewhere on MN I think, apparently MM wore a designer dress with lemons on it, and Jill Biden wore a similar print a few weeks after and apparently MM sent her a note and lemons to thank her for her support ?! 🤔

Really? You can't even credit them with falling in love with each other.

Says it all. How mean.

Loads of peple wear white coats. I really wouldn't read too much in to that.

But daytime white gloves? Well that had started to die out in the 1950s and, apart from a brief Madonna-inspired resurgence in the 1980s, daytime gloves are generally not worn.

The late ER II wore white gloves a lot, as did her mother and sister), but Princess Anne (who used to wear them back in the 60s when she began public duties) has almost entirely abandoned them. Queen Camilla is sometimes seen in daytime gloves, including white ones.

But other than dark ones in winter, the younger royals (Duchess of Edinburgh and younger) don't seem t wear them, and I don't think it's common at all now.

So yes, I do think white gloves are making a statement.

But I'm not sure what that statement would be

Sugarfree23 · 23/07/2023 14:35

The coat

Your never going to convince me one isn't a copy of the other.
The collar is slightly smaller, the buckle is the same, off center fastening, 3/4 sleeves, white gloves.

I'll challenge you to find me a picture of anyone in a similar outfit.

The lemon dress thing was very weird 🍋

pintery · 23/07/2023 14:55

Also, I agree with you @Sugarfree23 about the white coat dress, again very weird to wear that to the Queen's jubilee celebrations 🫤

It wasn't really about Wallis, although Baldwin was concerned about her relationship with Ribbentrop. It was more really about the imminent European war, and the political stance of Edward. His general unreliability - wine stains on documents in the red box for example - and his professed admiration for the Fuhrer and his regime. Edward also seemed unaware that he was a Constitutional monarch and that Parliament is Sovereign.

Maireas · 23/07/2023 15:05

Ok, @Sugarfree23 - that white outfit is incredibly similar! I do see what you mean. That's taken me by surprise and now I'm revisiting the Oprah dress.
