H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

@MrsFinkelstein - I saw it somewhere on MN I think, apparently MM wore a designer dress with lemons on it, and Jill Biden wore a similar print a few weeks after and apparently MM sent her a note and lemons to thank her for her support ?! 🤔

Oh dear God.

Sadly I have to agree with you @BadgerB.
In the long run I hope we're proved wrong.

I think they both fell in love.

They did indeed.
Harry with Meghan; and Meghan with a Prince and a title.

Really? You can't even credit them with falling in love with each other.

Says it all. How mean.

Yes, that is what I think. An intelligent woman like Meghan is very unlikely to fall for an idiot like Harry "just for himself"

And this discussion is becoming "only say "nice" agreeable things". Which makes you all lovely people, no doubt, but doesn't necessarily reflex truth.

Of course anyone can comment. Discussion on the thread. But to insult another poster for no reason is a PA.

Who is a cliquester, no idea what that means.

Well, Chelsea is very bright and Cressida doesn’t seem short of brains. I suspect Harry can seem quite good fun on first acquaintance. The stupidity and self absorption perhaps become apparent later.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/07/2023 16:22

It was more really about the imminent European war, and the political stance of Edward

That makes perfect sense, Mairais; what I guess I really should have said is that, with the two of them together, they'd get a thoroughly toxic mix on their hands - especially when it was said at the time that Edward was listening to almost no-one else

Anyway they certainly dodged a bullet and after George got the much-admired Elizabeth, so for the RF it was probably a win in the end

Sugarfree23 · 23/07/2023 16:22

Maireas · 23/07/2023 15:05

Ok, @Sugarfree23 - that white outfit is incredibly similar! I do see what you mean. That's taken me by surprise and now I'm revisiting the Oprah dress.

Another one to Google is the red jumpsuit.

Serenster · 23/07/2023 16:25

None of us know the truth, obviously. But given we live in a world where both women and men have appeared to marry for financial advantage and status (Anna Nicole Smith, Kevin Federline, Heather Mills certainly have raised eyebrows in the past, for example) it would be ridiculously naive to not accept it’s possible. Anything is possible.

And when we know that Meghan entered into a relationship with someone who had been openly racist in the past, whose friends she found intolerable, who had a completely different background to hers - not college, fine food and wine and living the public highlife but outdoorsy, blood sports, army and drinking - it’s a reasonable question to wonder what was it about Prince Harry that was so attractive. Mrs Merton would definitely have asked her famous question.

Serenster · 23/07/2023 16:26

Just FYI - the outfit Wallis was wearing was a similar style, admittedly, but it may not have been red - the original black and white photo was colourised.

The coat

Your never going to convince me one isn't a copy of the other.
The collar is slightly smaller, the buckle is the same, off center fastening, 3/4 sleeves, white gloves.

I'll challenge you to find me a picture of anyone in a similar outfit.

Wow it really is a complete copy

LaDeeDa123 · 23/07/2023 16:33

Maybe it was a bit harsh @Roussette but it was a response to a previous post @Iwantcakeeveryday had made telling me what I can and cannot say. This board is open to everyone and I still maintain MM wouldn’t pee on people if they were on fire. I think that’s fair comment.

Millicentsparty · 23/07/2023 16:49

but then it's widely said that Bertie (George) was considered unsuitable too and only "got the job" because the others brothers were felt to be even worse

Oh, you see, I thought Bertie got the job because he was next in line. I thought that's how monarchies worked.

AutumnCrow · 23/07/2023 16:50

So it that why Kate said ‘wow’ when she first saw the white coat outfit? (From lipreading.) Would have recognised the look as being ‘Wallis’?

Serenster · 23/07/2023 16:54

I can’t imagine Kate has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Wallis vast couture wardrobe, somehow. 😀 Maybe she just liked it, if that is what she indeed said?

(And thanks to your post AutumnCrow I’m for the first time just making a connection between Wallis the woman and Wallis the high street brand. The Duchess of Windsor must have been turning in her grave! 🤣)

I suppose he could have been prevailed upon to refuse the crown?

I don’t suppose he’d have been dragged out from behind a curtain by the palace guard like emperor Claudius and told he’s now ‘it’ if he’d agreed with the government to decline.

It was always said that Bertie never wanted to be king because he was very shy and he was embarrassed by his stutter. That the Queen mother took against David because he'd forced all this stress onto her husband.
So I think if Bertie could have got out of it, he would.
I've no idea why his younger two brothers should be considered unsuitable, the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester, because their children have always behaved impeccably. Obviously his youngest brother had died as a child.

Normally, in the event of the Monarch's death, it's about the line of succession. This was not a death. Edward intended to stay in the UK with Wallis and have his Prince of Wales title reinstated. Among the deliberations were concerns about Bertie's ability, and discussions included his brothers Henry and George. In the end, for the sake of stability, they decided on Bertie and that he should take the regnal name George as a form of continuity from his late father. Monetary discussions continued with Edward for some time.

It doesn't matter why a king stops being a king, in this country the next person in line gets offered the crown. Where's the proof that the brothers sort of took a vote on who the next king would be?

Maireas · 23/07/2023 17:09

They didn't take a vote. They participated in discussions. This was possibly to ensure their support - in case they favoured Edward. That could be tricky.
An abdication was unprecedented and cabinet and other records indicate that the government had to ensure that due process was observed.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/07/2023 17:16

Well put, Maireas. As you rightly suggested, though the "normal" way would be for George VI to simply step in as next in line, circumstances were anything but normal and a wider discussion would hardly have been a surprise
