Grifters indeed! Can we have a lift Joe?

H&M asked if they could have a lift home on AF1 after HMQs funeral.
Environmentally friendly sure, but makes them look grabby and entitled again. Makes for a good story though.

It wasn’t mean at all . It wasn’t a criticism , it was a very shrewd observation.

OK. We can shrewdly observe Kate's hand movements then. Of which there are many.
I just think... OK you don't like her (the collective you, not 'you') but to criticise how she puts her hand to her face in order to look good in photos is mean.

Oh Kate received plenty of criticism! Her clothes , being too thin and her “ rictus grin” which seems to be a favourite expression on here.

I have 'rictus grin' many a time about Meghan. Not about Kate.

I agree.

I agree.

Shrewd observation = criticism about anything which can be cloaked as 'shrewd observation'
Must remember that one whould I ever be challenged on anything I say about other members of the Royal, but given I don't criticise how they stand, hold their hands, their hair or body, I probably won't need it.

We can add this to the Royal Threads glossary.

A "shrewd observation" is anything cutting and mean that is said about Meghan, especially stuff addressed to her physical appearance.

Similar comments made about Kate are not "shrewd observations" but just cutting and mean.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/07/2023 18:22

I think if you’re truly confident you don’t need to lie and exaggerate to make yourself sound better or put others down for the same reason

I am honestly saving this one, and the thread as a reminder!

Exactly. No need to criticise Meghan for putting her hand to her face then.

I’m not criticising it - I’m pointing out that she is consciously posing to look good in photos. That’s perfectly normal in some environments, and completely not normal in others.

If it was a natural and unconscious action (like Charles fiddling with his cuffs or William checking his coat button which they do a lot) I wouldn’t point it out, as those are not done intentionally as poses, they are just habits.

I’m a big fan of Kate but I am happy to point out that she does this really annoying arm/hand thing when she’s talking to people or doing an earnest piece to camera. It’s a bit like Tony Blair’s podium speech hands - it’s an up and down motion with arms bent at the elbow and hands straight out and facing each other.

I suspect that she had some speech coaching and they gave her the technique as a way of emphasis and keeping hands busy but not fidgety.

Blair had clearly been coached to use it for statesmanship - the problem is he did it too much and too often and it became noticeable.

And once you notice it then it’s SUPER annoying. I wish someone would coach Kate out of it. It looks like an automatic reflex now.

So you have the eyes of the world on you and it is out of place and 'not normal' to look your best?

Why not just call her a poser and be done with it lol

I agree it is annoying. Just keep your hands still Kate

I find Kates hair flicking really annoying too.

She is posing. I think I’ve been pretty clear about that. Watch the Met Gala, or any big premiere red carpet - the stars, men and women all do it. It means they get great pictures and as I have said many times, there is nothing wrong with that.

The problem is when you take that behaviour, which is fine on a celebrity red carpet,(and other Royals do this too on red carpets - think William, Kate, Charles and Camilla at the James Bond premiere - they walked to the top of the stairs and stood in a row for photos) and apply it to a typical Royal engagement. Like walking into a church. Or walking into a hospital. It comes across as unnatural, because no-one poses in that way in that environment. That is my only point.

Meghan presumably weighed up looking her best against looking unnatural and plumped for looking her best. That’s fine. But the downside is that she looks unnatural, and unauthentic, and some people don’t warm to that.

ArcaneWireless · 20/07/2023 18:50

I hadn’t noticed fidgety hands. I bet I do now though! 😁

I fidget terribly hand wise - if I were a person in the public eye I think folk would assume I was silently asking for help. That or a chippy supper.

Serenster · 20/07/2023 18:57

Ha wordler - I swear I had never seen that article before. 🤣 As I said I had first noticed it myself watching Meghan exit from her car at Eugenie’s wedding and walk several metres across the kerb and pathway to the receiving line of clergymen with her hand stuck in that position, and thought “WTF?”. 🤣

Here’s another pose Meghan favours - again, it takes an absolutely lovely photo!

Serenster · 20/07/2023 19:03

(I have just remembered - I tried the “hand by my face” in a photo I posted on instagram once, and lots of people told me what a nice photo it was - it’s definitely a top tip 🤣 )

wordler · 20/07/2023 19:04

Actually I think someone is coaching Kate re the hands thing in speeches - in this video they are cutting to a tighter shot to remove all hands and also she’s trying really hard to tone down the movements but one hand escapes and does the thing on its own.

I have spent a very happy 20 mins practicing T-Rex hand on the train.

I asked the guard I see regularly how I looked.

It wasn’t amazing. It wasn’t Poised. It wasn’t Elegant. It wasn’t Regal.

Apparently I looked like something beginning with T. And ending in x.

I may have to work on it. But at least I know for sure that the guard is properly honest.

Which will be remembered if I ever need to ask if my bum looks big in something.

If I did the pretty pose that MM is doing above, I reckon folk would think I’d been playing with superglue.

Isn’t that hand to face/ear pose also used by Victoria Beckham.

Maireas · 20/07/2023 19:11

That is exactly VB's pose!
