Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

It was around 94-95. I lived in this city until about 98.

Ricki's show was on daily repeat.

I also learned German from watching The Bold and the Beautiful, Melrose Place, Roseanne and Columbo.

Then the guy who dubbed Columbo's voice in German died and they changed his voice. It was not the same after that.

And there was a really bad Tori Spelling film that they repeated almost every week called "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?"

Fun times.

Did you see Zac Efron on Graham Norton where he was talking about High School Musical being dubbed into different languages? He was so disappointed with, I think, the Spanish voice! It was quite effeminate. And he said what made it worse was that he would forever be represented by that voice. I'll see if I can find it.

AliceOlive · 09/07/2023 13:28

Yeah, Colombo’s voice is its own character. It seems rather important to get someone with a similarly interesting voice.

AliceOlive · 09/07/2023 13:32

Oh funny re Zac Efron’s voiceover. I never thought about that.

and is that Joey Tribbiani sitting next to him? 🤣

Gracewithoutend · 09/07/2023 13:40

Ooo, I'd love to hear How you doing? in Zac's Spanish voice! 😂

Ohpleeeease · 09/07/2023 13:43

@Samcro

👍 No worries, very happy we cleared that up!

@Gracewithoutend if you look up thread a poster was saying bringing race into the thread was derailing. to be honest the picking apart of MrsMaxDeWinter is starting to look like a targeted attack.
they are allowed to post about finding something boring and mention race. its not against the talk guidelines.

I did not say this. I said discuss race where it reflects the issues in the OW show without becoming abusive and confrontational which is where this was heading.

No idea who ricki lake is? Studied and worked in Germany for three years and also have no idea what a schlampe is. Please enlighten!

Oprah I can remember I think on day time tv? Always enlightening and entertaining in a warm caring way. I suppose this was her route with the H&M interview. I think she was as genuinely surprised at the revelations and it was not an act.

Too funny, but very right.

German dubbing of black voices was quite interesting. They tended to go for REALLY deep voices, whether for the men or women.

Interestingly, the woman who dubbed Roseanne Barr on Roseanne also dubbed Whoopi Goldberg's voice in everything she played.

Will Smith though had a very high annoying voice on Fresh Prince, similar to Steve Urkel.

Columbo was gutting to me because the original guy was so good.

Funny thing is I had never seen many of these shows in the English original.

So when I moved to England a year or so later, I was completely thrown by the original voices in English! Especially on Melrose Place, where Alison had a deep, rich voice, deeper it seemed than Billy's.

Amongst other things, Ricki Lake had a daytime talk show in the US from 1993-2004.

Schlampe - scroll up to find Mrs Max description because it’s funnier that way.

I had no idea so much American tv got exported and translated. No wonder we enjoy the seedier aspects of our global reputation!

costacoughee · 09/07/2023 14:31

@AliceOlive Oh yep. It does. Hmmm. Jerry springer lol 😂

jeffgoldblum · 09/07/2023 14:37

Ricky lake has also been in a few movies!
One called Mrs winterbourne co starring Brendan Fraser was a favourite of mine! 🤣

Whenever I hear Oprah and Ricki I think of that Robbie Williams song “Strong”

“Oprah Winfrey, Ricki Lake. Teach me things that I don’t need to know”.

🤪

Didn’t she start in Hairspray? Her talk show career came later. It wasn’t in the same league as Oprah’s but it was massively popular.

jeffgoldblum · 09/07/2023 15:00

I think your right @Ohpleeeease , she was Tracey turnblatt wasn't she?

LadyMuckingabout · 09/07/2023 15:04

My female family all had crushes on Tom Selleck, speaking in a deep sonorous voice in Magnum PI on Italian tv. To discover his real voice was high and squeaky was devastating!

jeffgoldblum · 09/07/2023 15:06

Loved Tom selleck @LadyMuckingabout , my dad used to call it ' magnum pissing idiot' 🤣, Saturday tv was great in the 80,s that and the a team was prime time!

Gracewithoutend · 09/07/2023 16:30

The Rikki Lake show was for younger people, like in their 20s, I think.
I remember her getting married, pregnant and divorced all whilst in the show. 😄

Gracewithoutend · 09/07/2023 16:30

Oh, and Rikki lost loads of weight.

Ohpleeeease · 09/07/2023 17:51

@jeffgoldblum yes, she was TT.

”Magnum pissing idiot” - Genius! 😂

@Gracewithoutend she never seemed to be the same shape from one season to another. Am I misremembering or did she also have a famous sister?

Howsimplywonderful · 09/07/2023 18:12

The Program that defined my childhood was Dallas on Saturday nights after the 9 o’clock news. My parents were quite strict so I wasn’t allowed to watch it so my brother and I would appear at the starting credits to tell my mum we couldn’t sleep as our toenails were too long, ears needed to be cleaned etc to try to get a few minutes. She would often forget to send us back to bed until someone appeared in a negligee and then off to bed. I remember a friend calling to the door sobbing to say ‘Jocks dead’ after the actor who played him passed away. We used to be so excited by the annual ‘oil barons hall’ and the on off relationship between JR and Sue Ellen. We weren’t happy when Donna Reed took over as Ms Ellie.

Years later my brother and I were both studying and were both back home for some reason and they started showing Dallas from the start. we used to rewatch for our lunch break with sandwiches on knees.

it was still marvellous fun

Samcro · 09/07/2023 18:31

Oh I loved Dallas and knots landing
never dynasty

Ohpleeeease · 09/07/2023 20:04

Dallas for me too, Samcro. Dynasty left me cold.

Gracewithoutend · 09/07/2023 20:29

My mum used to send me to the offie to get chocolate and pop ready to watch Dallas.
And we watched Dynasty because Mum was so admiring of how Joan Collins looked so good.
