Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

I would love to see Oprah really interview Meghan. That was more like others described, Oprah creating a safe space. It felt appropriate as they, Harry and Meghan, both seem vulnerable to me. It would not have been kind to ask any pressing questions. I respect that. And of course getting them to sit down was an absolute coup.

The juxtaposition of Oprah, who had a very difficult childhood, family life, etc and scrapped to get where she is vs, Meghan who has lived a charmed life and admitted she never saw herself as black, never experienced racism until she was a Princess cannot be lost on any American of any color.

@Ohpleeeease thanks, its not something I always understand.

@Gracewithoutend sorry if it sounded that way. i was talking in general and was not directing it at you.

Love that Oprah got Americans reading at a level I don’t believe was happening before.

Her popularity was tied to focusing on things that bring people together.

Shed absolutely brilliant.

And yes, Hamza Yusuf is the SNP leader and first minister of Scotland. I believe that the position is open to all UK citizens who live in Scotland, whether or not they have Scottish heritage I'm sure Humza would be appalled to hear that he's not Scottish. My DH's ancestors came from Ireland but he's Scottish. Some of my ancestors came from Belgium but I'm Scottish.
Here's another Scotsman.

I watched Oprah as a child, along with all the other talk shows that were in in the early days.

You make me feel old Smile
I was aware of Oprah as I was of other UK daytime chat show presenters (eg Tricia, Robert Kilroy-Silk) but I was working so none of them really impinged on me (hence thinking a colleague was talking about "opera").

next think I knew Oprah had an absolute cult following.

Exactly this! Most impressive.

jeffgoldblum · 09/07/2023 12:49

I mostly knew Oprah from the film 'the colour purple'
Excellent and moving film , never saw many chat shows from either country , however my flat mate and I did watch Ricky lake a lot when hungover!! 🤣

The questioning of a poc for bringing up race is fucking disgusting.

I can challenge what anyone says. If people try to use a racist stereotype from years gone by to manipulate a discussion today, I can call that out if I believe it to be inappropriate. Which I do believe it was.

Roussette · 09/07/2023 12:58

I remember Ricki Lake, if I watched it, it was in horror and sometimes I really couldn't resist
Ditto Jerry Springer

"Even though I was naked in bed with a woman, I wasn't cheating on you"
"I've slept with your father and your brother"

And so on 😂🤣😅

I am not sure why you believe I said Hamza Yousaf (not Yusuf as I wrote) is not Scottish.

His own Wiki profile says "Born to Pakistani immigrants in Glasgow ...."

He is Scottish because he grew up in Scotland. But he does not have Scottish heritage.

Isn't this one of the things the UK celebrates, the mixed heritage of many of its citizens?

You can be of Jamaican heritage, but be English, like Sol Campbell who played for England.
You can be of Nigerian heritage but be Welsh, like Shirley Bassey.

Not sure what is controversial here.

Hamza is of Pakistani Muslim heritage, and is the Scottish First Minister because he was raised in Scotland. You can be Scottish without having Scottish heritage.

@LaMarschallin I was trying to working out dates basked on where we lived and it must have been around the earliest days of Oprah, 1984?

@jeffgoldblum Ricki Lake!

In my memory they were all a bit tawdry but next thing I knew, Oprah was on a different plane than everyone. Polished, kind, covering topics that helped elevate women. Just drawing people together.

Mom and I thought my friend and her mom were little bit goofy over it all, but could appreciate the quality of programming Oprah was bringing. And maybe that’s relevant. My friend was from the “perfect” family. Our moms had grown up together. Mine had always had to work though, while hers was a SAHM. They had a family vacation home; we needed a new roof. We couldn’t really afford to be running off and buying whatever O magazine was selling. So I was in awe of the business woman but also felt a bit like I wasn’t the target audience maybe.

Fair enough, Samcro. I appreciate that. I don't get involved in race discussions on here. And indeed I have stood up for people who have used racial words, not because I thought they were right, but because we can all say things when we're cross and frustrated, so I don't see the point of people hammering on about it. I don't think there are any bad people on here. Just people embedded in their opinions.
MrsM's comment came out of nowhere, though, and took me aback.
Anyhow, like I said, sometimes we write things that later we think was a bit ill-advised - we've all done it - so I'm not going to talk about it anymore.

Howsimplywonderful · 09/07/2023 13:04

Oprah was terrible in ‘a wrinkle in time’ but that was an absolutely terrible film

MrsMaxDeWinter · 09/07/2023 13:05

Ricki Lake!

I was a student in a European city in which I did not know the language for the first three months.

Oprah and Ricki Lake got me through some very hard times.

I am so, so fond of her I can't tell you.

It was like a train wreck! Couldn’t look away.

That lead into the paternity tests revealed while we watched.

Honestly those show did the opposite for American culture of what Oprah accomplished.

Oh, if we want to talk about race, we could really discuss what Oprah did for race relations in America.

It was around 94-95. I lived in this city until about 98.

Ricki's show was on daily repeat.

I also learned German from watching The Bold and the Beautiful, Melrose Place, Roseanne and Columbo.

Then the guy who dubbed Columbo's voice in German died and they changed his voice. It was not the same after that.

And there was a really bad Tori Spelling film that they repeated almost every week called "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?"

Fun times.

@AliceOlive
I used to love Oprah. Especially in the early days when she used to stand in the audience, getting them to ask questions. But, imo, her show lost its way when she decided to take it to life-affirming topics only!! Soooo boring. Hehe.
I just don't know what she's about these days. I know she's had years of honing her interview skills but does she really find out anything new in her interviews? It seems to me that her guests go on her show with a pre-arranged confession rather than her drilling for truth. That's just not her style. And I guess there's something to be said for her that she has gained a reputation of being respectful to people.
What work does she actually do these days?

LaMarschallin · 09/07/2023 13:18

Bit later, in my estimation.
I worked with the opera/Oprah colleague from 1989 to 1992.

That’s so interesting and funny!

My favourite German expression that I learned on Melrose Place was "Du Schlampe!", often directed to Heather Locklear's character Amanda, followed by a slap to the face. It means, "You Bitch!"

I introduced it to my family in my African country, and to this day, my mother says, it's not good to be a Schlampe!
