Harry and Meghan slammed by Spotify executive after podcast deal ends | The Independent

The old thread got closed, just as I was trying to quote tweet someone! So I've started this one, because this shitshow is still rumbling on

As all the posters have already agreed that's what happened, I doubt they'd need to read back.

OK whatever you say. I am glad you don't find the sofa rumour funny then and your post with the sick emoji and dreading what he did on the sofa, was just a minor slip up. Fine.

oh I know what you mean, if you and I had exchanged comments about the pegging rumour and laughed about it in any way we would have been piled on. I see the double standards you speak of.

Does ‘Hello’ have any stories on the rumours

Don't know about Hello but there's been reports in Radar, OK magazine (US) and Page Six about the rumoured split. All US press as they're protected by 1st amendment. UK won't touch because our press isn't free and H&M are litigious.

The Express has a piece saying that Harry called William to ask if he and MM could come back to the UK to live.

Interestingly the Page Six report included quotes from 'a source close to the couple' who denied the split rumours but said that both H & M are under 'tremendous financial pressure' and having 'emotional issues'.

I'm quite surprised that the source (who is Omid Scobie I presume) would dignify the rumours by talking to Page Six.

I take no notice of this kind of trash media, but it seems a bit unfortunate to have left at least partly because of the British version, only to find more of the same - though TBF it's not the US "daily papers" who are at it on the whole

Probably best to just keep their heads down and ignore, though whether they'll manage that is anyone's guess

Omid has his new book coming out so keeping M&H in the news cycle no matter good news or bad rumour is good for his potential sales.

I wonder how many sources would happily add their tuppence if they had to put their name to the quote?

I am surprised none of them are saying anything about a 7 year itch or somesuch guff.

The reality is that married life can be bloody tricky. Most (if not all) argue and have the luxury of doing so in private.

I still think the path they choose could well have made life trickier along the way. When you go for ‘us against the world’ it can go pears very quickly if one insists on going down a road you’d rather not step onto. Or if you are persuaded that a course of action can be a blazing triumph when it fact it’s could be a glaring error.

Do I think they are on a shoogly peg? I have no idea. No one does. But given that the pair of them seem to have sacrificed a lot of their old lives for this one, I would hope not.

They’d probably do better by disassociating themselves from various gobshites.

ArcaneWireless · 19/07/2023 13:36

apologies for errors. Sleep has not come visiting the last few days.

The UK and US media are totally different. The UK has onerous libel laws and injunctions which means it isn't difficult to stop an unflattering piece from being published (I honestly don't think the RF would have survived if this wasn't the case).

The US is different, they have strong 1st Amendment protections which means they take more of a 'publish and be damned' attitude. Also, unusually, if you do sue a US paper for libel or defam, the onus is on YOU the complainant to prove the allegations are untrue. The other side gets quite wide discovery rights so in suing for libel you would actually risk exposing even more about yourself that you don't want out in public.

I'm guessing that's why Prince Harry gave an interview in which he described the 1st amendment as 'bonkers'. I totally understand why someone like him would hate it, but he annoyed a lot of Americans by saying that, as the 1st amendment is very dear to them.

Gracewithoutend · 19/07/2023 13:46

It's amazing to me that all this has come about because of that "fucking grifters" comment. (Ending the thread,as it started!) Suddenly it's like the US media felt the bottle had been uncorked and it was ok to make comments. No one speculates like the sites in the US.
Page 6 have got them separating geographically as Harry goes to Africa, rather than actually separating. They say it's tension over worrying about funds. But with the money they made from the book and the documentary, you'd think they'd be sound for a while. Sounds like they're back to where they were in 2020 when they were new in the US and worrying about supporting themselves.
I'm sure with their connections, they'll be fine. And I think they're charging $100,000 a speech so that alone should provide a good income for them.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/07/2023 13:52

I realise that, potniatheron - I spend about half my life in the US - and it's largely why I commented on their choice to face their version rather than ours

Obviously that's not to defend the US media, since in their own way they can be as filthy as in the UK; it's just that, with it being harder to shut stories down there, it seemed a bit of a risk

Ohpleeeease · 19/07/2023 13:58

Their financial pressures could be eased immediately by a change of lifestyle. Perhaps that’s what they’re doing behind the scenes, working out how to live more economically. Like the rest of us.

Speeches about what exactly?

No doubt they'll be fine - they have privilege and advantages that most of us can only dream of!

The only area where I think they made an unforced error was in burning bridges with the RF so quickly and publicly. I think they could have advocated for the causes they care about just as successfully without doing that.

Harsh.
She is a world famous women's right activist, philanthropist and best selling author.
And he is a philanthropist and... ex prince.
So they must have speeches ready to go.

Although, and I know I've said this before, Meghan is on the books of the Harry Walker Agency. But, strangely, Harry isn't. Or maybe wasn't? I'm sure someone will tell me if he is now. It's strange they wouldn't both together have been signed up all the time.

Have they actually delivered any speeches in recent months ?

The US tabloid press make our crowd look like pussy cats. This was always going to happen, just a matter of time. The grace period is over and the US press is treating them like all other celebrities. There will continue to be speculation and rumours about their relationship - they are just more fodder for those supermarket magazines. In the UK there is some protection, both in law and with the RF machine. But they've lost that, and they are no longer the new shiny Prince and Princess on the scene being welcomed by the US as they escape the terrible British RF (just like the pilgrims did - I'm sure on a subconscious level that chimed with a lot of Americans).

I don't believe for a second there are money issues.

I read Harry's autobiography and he was consistently scathing about the Palace PR machine, which surprised me a great deal as they are known as one of the best machines out there (and the media kowtows to the RF anyway).

I honestly don't think he realised how good they were until he didn't have them anymore. I think he thought it was all him.

Wheresthebeach · 19/07/2023 16:20

Yeah I agree @potniatheron . I think the Palace machinery protected him a great deal, but it was what he was use to so he didn't really analyse it or understand it. I suspect he'll find it hard to cope with the US tabloid press using the 1st Amendment to say pretty much anything they want.

I mean he could always demand that they stop. That worked so well for him before.

Does anyone really want to listen to them making a speech though? I remember harry tried doing that when they first moved to the USA to a group of powerful ceos and businessmen, but there were complaints from the crowd that all he ever did was talk about his mummy. Also, despite all their celebrity connections, and working with some of the biggest Hollywood agencies, they still can’t seem to create anything successful without the royalty link. And at this point, they've just been retelling the same stories again and again on different media platforms.

He was great on chatshow Stephen Colbert.

He had the audience in the palm of his hand.

That's all they have to sell at the moment, though isn't it? Trashing the royals.
