Harry and Meghan slammed by Spotify executive after podcast deal ends | The Independent

The old thread got closed, just as I was trying to quote tweet someone! So I've started this one, because this shitshow is still rumbling on

The second hand embarrassment I feel for them is real - I think @maranella sums it up well.

They have grossly overestimated their own potential and talent and have wrung as much as they can out of their celebrity mates.

AutumnCrow · 27/06/2023 14:50

I think there's probably a 30-minute documentary's worth of conflict-of-interest material out there for someone to have a good look at the Better Up / Invictus 'partnering'.

I can hear Ross Kemp's voice in my head: Better Up? Or better off without?

RoundandRounnnd · 27/06/2023 14:55

Doesn’t this deluded story-telling ever get boring? For all the repetitive ‘discussions’, what is achieved? The only thing that results from it is they remain at the forefront of people’s consciousness, encouraging organisations to invest in them. While there is interest there will always be a pay cheque. The very thing that some of you don’t want them to obtain. Don’t delude yourselves that they will ever be on the breadline – despite the headlines that give you hope. I also suspect that they’re a hell of a lot happier than the vast majority that turn to MN and social media each day to deride discuss them.

So who has invested in them or written them 'pay cheques' in the past year?

Oh dear, this is awful. But the list of potential topics for Harry has me wheezing.

😂😂😂😂 I thought it was a bit blah although I chuckled at bit at Meghan's podcast titles. But then I read Harry's...I actually cried laughing. Poor Chelsy Davy bring caught up in this. But very funny.

Much like you, I don’t know. But why is it important for you to know?

You are claiming that notoriety results in 'pay cheques' yet can't provide any evidence of same. Spotify have dropped them and there doesn't seem to be much in the works for NF.

Perhaps they just aren't very marketable unless they're slagging off Harry's family? And they must have almost exhausted that source of income by now.

Sometimes it gets a bit boring but on the whole, no. I'd never read these articles, some genuinely funny, if I didn't see them here.
And I've learnt so much, reading up about different things they've shoneca light on, like how the American charity award system works, the dubious nature of some charities like One Young World, the undefined way these media services calculate their viewing figures to obscure the actual truth, etc. It's very interesting.
I agree people want to be attached to the RF in some way. So as you go down the feeding chain, they'll probably find someone who'll take their titles as near enough to the real thing. So they'll always get a paycheck. Toilet duck, anyone?
By the way, I suspect they're happier than me. I'm off to my mums care home having spent til 4.30 this morning in a&e with her, waiting to have her scalp glued together. So I really do hope that their world is better than the real one because mine's not much fun.

I actually think Penguin did Harry a disservice by allowing the stuff about Elizabeth Arden cream, frozen todger (sp?), losing his virginity and nasty comments about his brother and step mother. They know their business and must have realised it would cause derision. Harry isn't thick skinned, he's no Boris telling stories, I don't know what any of them were thinking. The damage to his reputation will hurt him, may not hurt sales, but that doesn't mean it was good for Harry long term. Maybe they just decided to cash in while to going was good.

Penguin aren’t his parents or a counsellor. They aren’t there to advise. And in his interviews harry defended that, he wanted to put some crap in about his penis as he thought it was funny. He’s a grown man. He had choices. He’s not a small child who his partners should be giving guidance to

maranella · 27/06/2023 15:35

Oh God that Atlantic piece roasts them! They are no longer credible. The Atlantic is pretty liberal too, so broadly you would expect that it might be supportive.

I'm not sure they can come back from such parodying as they've been subject to in the past few months. How is anyone going to take them seriously again?

@Littlethingsmeanalot Your right, but usually businesses protect their people (assets) a bit - esp when they are expecting multiple books. They let him destroy his reputation...its just odd.

Penguin are Harry's publishers, not his therapist. They don't really care about what's good for Harry long term. They only care about what will sell.

And that's one of Harry's problems. He's alienated himself from almost everyone who cared for him, and he's now surrounded by people whose only interest in him is how much money he can make them. And when it's clear he can't make them money, as is the case with Spotify, they will not hesitate to cut him loose.

This is the life of freedom Harry chose for himself.

Why is it odd? It's a personal account so provided everything was cleared by the legal team, Penguin aren't going to interfere with Harry's truth.

And why should they? Royal gossip and scandal sell. That's what they signed Harry up for. His reputation is neither here nor there.

Milcar · 27/06/2023 15:43

According to his defenders, Spare has enhanced his reputation, not destroyed it 😀

I really don’t think writing about his todger , eight hour cream are what ruined his reputation. Yes it was the nasty comments about his family, but quite frankly that was Harry’s intent and if you removed them it would be a pamphlet and not a book. It also wasn’t the book alone. It was everything, Oprah, the docu series, the myriad of uncomfortable promo interviews he did so people would buy it and line his pockets, the ludicrous half truths and lies, that’s what ruined his reputation.

Unless Megs is going to release a tell all book I’m not sure there’s anything else they can feasibly do that will give them the mega bucks they want. However, I may be a bit biased as I do love William and Kate

Wasn't she talking of releasing the diary she kept at the time as a book. That would match Spare in terms of gossip etc.

Qbish · 27/06/2023 16:03

Yes, it's the half truths and plain lies that have irritated me the most. What they don't seem to realise is that if you do a post-engagement interview, foreign tour interview, Oprah interview, Netflix series, book, etc, if you are not being entirely honest then people will compare things and add things up and find that you're fibbing for your own ends.

Aside from the racism accusation, the worst one for me was the repeated issue that Meghan needed and asked for support for her mental health from the Palace and was denied it. When, in fact, Harry had his own therapist at the time (as stated in Spare), which he says he organised himself, so all they had to do was pick up the phone. But no, they had to make a big drama about the supposed lack of support 🙄

There seem to be quite a few threads around the time it was released, with (some) people saying how well he came across. Each to their own!

It would and people would definitely buy it. I honestly don’t think there is anything else they can successfully produce that will pull in the ratings.

Littlethingsmeanalot · 27/06/2023 16:06

I think they also did a video diary from the start, they might just be desperate enough to try to release that.
