The coverage of Fergie was relentlessly bad, ditto Sophie Wessex at the time of the fake sheikh (ruin of the Royal family, absolutely calamitous, never recover!!)
Fergie we all got used to - she was always v loyal to HMQ and did actually work the things she turned her hand to in order to earn. And used her RL experience eh for WeightWatchers (considered deeply naff/downmarket at the time, but actually quite a good link, which played on the vicious epithets). The children's books weren't bad, and although the Mills and Boon are cloying she does seem to knock them out in a way that pleases the readership
Sophie just stuck her head down and did all the duties assigned to her. With no further scandal. And after a couple of decades it's paid off, and she really learned the ropes of a few key charities. She doesn't get the UK mass media coverage, but her work (esp when overseas) against rape as a tool of war, VAWG and FGM is having increasing impact - it's a shame we rarely hear about things like her visit to South Sudan. But it's built her reputation in the background, which is why she now gets positive coverage (to the extent that people forget just how bad it was, nor realise that's why the half in/ half out model was unthinkable)
