I do remember very unpleasant articles - mostly from the Mail - about Catherine, before her and William became engaged. Lots of banging on about her middle class background, and calling her Waitey Katie.

The coverage of Fergie was relentlessly bad, ditto Sophie Wessex at the time of the fake sheikh (ruin of the Royal family, absolutely calamitous, never recover!!)

Fergie we all got used to - she was always v loyal to HMQ and did actually work the things she turned her hand to in order to earn. And used her RL experience eh for WeightWatchers (considered deeply naff/downmarket at the time, but actually quite a good link, which played on the vicious epithets). The children's books weren't bad, and although the Mills and Boon are cloying she does seem to knock them out in a way that pleases the readership

Sophie just stuck her head down and did all the duties assigned to her. With no further scandal. And after a couple of decades it's paid off, and she really learned the ropes of a few key charities. She doesn't get the UK mass media coverage, but her work (esp when overseas) against rape as a tool of war, VAWG and FGM is having increasing impact - it's a shame we rarely hear about things like her visit to South Sudan. But it's built her reputation in the background, which is why she now gets positive coverage (to the extent that people forget just how bad it was, nor realise that's why the half in/ half out model was unthinkable)

Some of the courtiers and other staff are incredibly snobby and it is a very class-based, superior snobbery. I don't think Harry even 'sees' this - many of his own friends are as bad - and I can't imagine he warned Meghan sufficiently or that she had time to fully understand.

Yet the more I see of Harry the less 'class' he appears to have. I can see why Meghan is backing away slowly into a different (but more familiar to her) world, because he's still really stuck inside his - in fact more stuck since they moved to California.

And he's having the wrong sort of therapy IMO, especially now he's a father - he needs something like acceptance & commitment therapy, not the constant 'my childhood was shit' deep dives, on repeat, year in and year out. In the end, you have to move on and into the here and now.

IcedPurple · 18/06/2023 17:35

The rest comes from signing multi-year deals. Spotify (estimated 20 million). Netflix (estimated 100 million).

Even if those 'estimates' are correct, and I have my doubts, they will be production budgets, not money in the bank for the Sussexes. Their net profit would be a small fraction of those 'estimates'.

I think they have been very badly advised, and wonder if they can sue?

there were also snide comments of her coal miner background, how she wasn’t William’s choice to get married to because she was plain and boring compared to a blonde aristocrat whose name was linked to William’s. I remember there were also people who celebrated their break up, I mean these were comments I read when I followed some royal forums. There was hardly anyone defending her or calling out anyone for bullying her.

There were mean threads on here too back in the days when w&k got engaged serenster found them, saying things like ‘I hope they both die’ - how horrible

I think they have been very badly advised, and wonder if they can sue?

What makes you think they've been badly advised? Rather than not listening to advice and thinking they know best?

We're talking about a couple who issued a 'manifesto' telling the world about their plans to 'collaborate with the Queen', seemingly without clearing it with her first, and certainly without realising that one does not 'collaborate' with the Queen.

Agreed - this piece is very minimally about Meghan. It’s about WME and sticking the boot to Harry. The inevitable Dior denial will come through next week and you’ll be right - Duchess Dior Dream Dashed/Denied. 🙄

If the main source is WME (and a post earlier in the thread showed there were several) then the idea that Harry is toxic/ attracts toxicity, then it does beg the question of why she thinks its in her interests to start sowing a seed of distancing herself from him.

And, being cynical, I suspect flying the kite of Dior (a brand that hardly separates her from Harry as he's been a recent recipient of their largesse) is aimed at creating the image that she in in that league, with goal of making her more attractive to a different luxury brand

I think she would be a better match for Ralph Lauren - wafting round at polo matches could be a good synergy, and I think their clothes would look really good on her. But the fly in the ointment for that theory is that she'd be better positioned for it without distance from Harry

And Harry could wear ‘safari.
They even have font similarities with Ralph Lauren

Meghan Markle - Duchess of Dior?
Hohohogreenjennie · 18/06/2023 17:49

@WaterIris in relation to what you were saying about the media being unpleasant to Catherine, I think this article really highlights some of what she went through.

I don’t know why people have amnesia about all of this. She and her family (particularly her mother) were really mocked for their middle class status. I also remember Carole being compared to Pride & Prejudice’s Mrs Bennet and accused them of social climbing (the Wisteria sisters) and being generally uncouth (doors to manual, toiletgate?)

Also, does anyone remember when she was in the hospital having just had George and that radio show phoned the hospital pretending to be the Queen? The poor nurse that answered the phone ended up committing suicide from the shame. Imagine having that on your conscious as a new mother when you yourself haven’t done anything wrong other than being a figure of interest.

For years, photographers camped outside Kate's house, abused her, and hounded her day and night. Photo / Getty Images

Hounded, harassed, hated: Kate Middleton's rocky road to royalty - NZ Herald

Before Meghan Markle revealed her challenges on the road to royalty, Kate endured plenty.

If she starts working with Dior, that will be the last thing I ever buy from them. I hope many others will also boycott them.

It has been reported by many staff members that she is a bully. Many have quit working for her.

I won’t be buying anything else either.

What they dished out to the late Queen and Prince Phillip during the last months of their very long lives was unforgivable.

Then there’s all the rest.

They’re despicable.

Gracewithoutend · 18/06/2023 17:50

Yet the more I see of Harry the less 'class' he appears to have.

I don't know that I ever saw Harry as classy. But any class he might have had, disappeared when he not only touted for business for Meghan at the Disney premiere, but when Bob Iger tried to turn away, Harry literally moved back into his sightline to carry on begging. I never saw the like but he wasn't self-conscious about it all so he must be like that all the time.

Wasn't that when she was admitted to hospital with severe morning sickness during her first pregnancy? Not just after she'd had George?

Totally vile.

The possibility demise of their marriage is often seized upon with intense glee by a few, who love to refer to a “rumour” that was actually a total invention.

meanwhile, Kate and William remain dignified and calm. The late Queens maxim of “never complain, never explain” shown in practice.

what a pity Harry didn’t listen. He’d do well to look at how William and Kate cope.

Because it doesn't fit into the poor H&M narrative.

AutumnCrow · 18/06/2023 17:59

Was that an Australian radio thing? The fake call to Kate's hospital? I know I could look it up but I'm interested in whether I remembered it right.

WaterIris · 18/06/2023 17:59

I'd forgotten about the press coverage of Fergie. Wasn't there a headline saying Duchess of Pork or something, because she'd put some weight on? Horrible.

You’re right & Catherine faced the same snobbery.

It’s interesting to note Kathleen Kennedy’s experience when she married an Aristo. The lot of them, inc his close friends were vile, hiding all her clothes & shoes pre important events. Ho, Ho, Ho! She was brilliant & used her wit to make the lot of them look silly & won the lot over in the end! She didn’t take herself too seriously. She wasn’t beautiful but had easy charm & confidence.

Howsimplywonderful · 18/06/2023 18:05

I did like Kit Kennedy.

OK, what? Not entirely sure why you've posted an eye roll there; or do you have an issue with people asking you questions?

She calls herself the Duchess of Sussex. I'm not particularly au fait with the royals and their protocols, but if her title is 'Princess Meghan' (as you've referred to her), then why doesn't she call herself this? Or is she not a Princess?

🙄🙄OK

Hohohogreenjennie · 18/06/2023 18:06

@IcedPurple ah yes, you are correct!

St James’ Palace announced the pregnancy on 2nd December 2012 after Catherine admitted to hospital due to hyperemesis gravidarun

Prank call made on 4th Dec ‘12

Prank call broadcast on 5th Dec ‘12

Jacintha Saldanha committed suicide on 7th December 2012

I did like Kit Kennedy.

She really pulled her weight in WW2 too & didn’t need to! V sad husband died & as per Kennedy ‘curse’ died in a plane crash with echoes of the later one. As you’ll prob know. M should look at her as an example.
