I gave up watching due to the literary licence used in it - so many things not as portrayed.

Yes, I think that's really problematic when it's purporting to be about real events and people's lives who are still living.

Yes - I think the director (Stephen Frears??) is really cynical and devious about this. It's really disingenuous not to admit that films and TV carry much more force in most people's minds than history books or academic articles in obscure journals. He knows very well that most people are naive and will accept it as the true version.

Good old Dame Judi Dench who said that it should carry a clear warning saying 'This is fiction'. So many of my friends just swallow it whole, as if they are somehow watching a documentary.

Maireas · 03/07/2023 18:05

I actually think it's quite cruel. Some of the royals were portrayed in quite a cartoonish way. It's one thing to interpret the past, but the recent past and the private lives of those still living is quite unfair.

Sugarfree23 · 03/07/2023 22:19

The first couple of series of the Crown were good but I lost interest after that.

Sugarfree23 · 03/07/2023 22:20

Getting back to H&M do you think they are starting to regret walking away from Royal life?

I doubt it, @Sugarfree23 , especially Meghan.

Harry probably feels more adrift as he’s having to fully organize his own life now and also realize that he’s not considered a particularly special person anymore. I’m not being sarcastic, he’s been brought up as a prince, crowds have turned out to see him from the day he was born. Now the title isn’t enough anymore.

I have a feeling that's partly behind the desire for security. It's a status symbol and makes them feel important. They may not have the crowds of royal fans any more but they like being whisked round in black limos like VIPs. Hence the near miss NY story - they enjoy the drama.

Hence their annoyance at having to pay for it themselves.

MarcelProust · 04/07/2023 06:15

Oh goodness, there it is again........

They enjoy the drama.

They were chased around by paps and blacked out number plate cars. Jumping the curb and pushing other cars out of the way. Why would anyone enjoy that.

MarcelProust · 04/07/2023 06:19

This was supposed to be the last Crown, but Peter Morgan was asked about Harry and Meghan and he said something along the lines that their story is so compelling, it would seem now that the production company would be open to another season.

But, when you think about it, Harry is not in line to the crown. I think it's supposed to mostly concentrate on the heir line?

Films always mash up things and characters mostly to save time. But the main thread of the storyline is accurate. I wonder what people found so untrue about The Crown series.

grass321 · 04/07/2023 06:46

It transpired that a lot of the issues were caused by their security team and were over-exaggerated (according to the police).

Either way, it was a cat and mouse game of their own creation. Book into a hotel, as the other celebs do, drive into the underground parking lot and there's no need to have the car chase for two hours.

I was at an event last year with Tom Cruise. He had no security in the room, just a man outside when he wanted to go to the loo. As I left, he was walking through the park with the other concert goers (and his security man). No big drama and no peloton of security vehicles.

MarcelProust · 04/07/2023 08:09

Where did you get the police report, because as far as I know none has been released yet.
The mayor said it's impossible to have a high chase for 2hrs, but even a 10 minute chase is dangerous. Why he said this? because a reporter said to him it was 2hr chase, that's why. It's a lie, Harry and Meghan never said that.

The paps who were chasing them are the ones who say their security team caused problems, timelines of the event suggest otherwise.

They did not create anything.

They smiled and posed for some pics. That's enough. No need to chase them around anywhere.

WinnieTheW0rm · 04/07/2023 08:44

The police have however stated on record that there were no reported collisions, injuries or arrests.

There are a number of different accounts from the various paparazzi.

Wheresthebeach · 04/07/2023 08:50

It’s a massive change for him and it must take some adjusting. I suspect he didn’t realise how much was done for him and how much support he actually got. He’s had the worlds attention all his life - if he really wanted a quiet life then he would renounce his titles, stop gossiping about his family and live off his £34 million while quietly working for a charity. He does the exact opposite and courts the media and attention.

LadyMuckingabout · 04/07/2023 09:28

Look, there’s plenty you can defend about M&H, but the car chase - no. They were supposed to leave via the car rental place but chose to go out of the front. The whole thing was very odd, and, as the world and his dog observed (including me who lived there for some years) a tortoise goes faster than cars in Manhattan!

Milcar · 04/07/2023 09:52

They struggled to find relevant footage of paparrazzi intrusion for the NF series, didn't they?

Someone on a motorbike who may or may not have been following them, and then footage of cameras that were taking pictures of someone else (Katie Price I think?).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/07/2023 10:00

That's correct, MIlcar, though I think some of the footage was said to be of a Harry Potter crowd's photographers?

Like with the Oprah faked headlines, it's often best not to assume that everything presented by this pair is necessarily accurate

Milcar · 04/07/2023 10:05

I am sure they have been harassed by paparrazzi at times. But if they stop and think about the occasions when they have been harassed, and occasions when they haven't, that could give some clues about how to minimise the attention. And, of course, take advice from other people in the public eye who avoid unwanted attention.

Wheresthebeach · 04/07/2023 10:16

I suspect the big stars are in more demand from the paps than H&M. If it's really that triggering for them then they need to handle things differently. And for heavens sake no driver should be trying to 'get away' from them. Just drive safely, slowly and in a car with blacked out windows so there's no point in following.

That’s a point. If there are blacked out windows there really shouldn’t be an issue. There’s nothing to photograph anyway!

They did go out the car rental. Didn't some of you make fun of her outfit and make it seem like she was wearing the same colours as Hertz?

Whatever, they can go out the front as they want. The main thing is that the paps had their chance of photos, no need to follow them anywhere.

Perhaps she’s trying to give the paps the slip

They did not struggle, they showed men in boats and others coming right to the gate!

I believe there was even a time when Meghan was trying to feed Archie in a high chair and someone looked through the window.

We also saw a pap pic of Archie with Doria right at his own house. When Meghan goes out for walks with Archie and her her dogs, she is papped in the park. Even Orlando Bloom warned Harry about paps sitting waiting for him on his road.

They tried to capture as much as possible, but who on earth has a camera on 24/7. Not really a life.

Howsimplywonderful · 04/07/2023 10:42

@MarcelProust

No-one believes them anymore. They over egged the pudding with their ‘near catastrophic’ car chases

That was a media spin taken out of context. The Netflix show was saying, look what the media do on a daily basis to people. We were told this was a lie before the show aired, and it turned out, they didn't say it was footage of them.
