I think the experience of the royal wives (those who married in) and the press is a misnomer in some respects as it gets derailed into who had it worst and that is judged by in some cases personal experience of the poster

I think there is more to agree on then disagree?

  1. Why do they all have to go through this (as seems to the case)?
  2. If the Queen had had 3 daughters and 1 son and especially if by then it had already changed to the eldest being heir to the throne regardless of gender and that was s daughter, would the experience of the men who married in be different?

I think probably yes because I suspect this is as much about misogyny and how we feel about suspected 'social climbers' as anything else

I think it has been well put before that they all had periods of unfair and intrusive press with Diana and Fergie being of the time they were in, Kate having had so many years to be reported on and Meghan because of her background/foreigners/racial difference

I think what we can all be sure of is that had Meghan been just white they would still have tried to get something on her but being mixed race brought a very different element to it then the other wives experienced.

That's not reducing the racism - I'm just not sure it's much of a competition to be had at the end of the day when you and your family are being dragged through the mud for the entertainment of people who don't know you and because you had the temerity of falling in love

TrashyPanda · 12/06/2023 08:53

Interesting to consider males marrying into the family.

men do not automatically become a Prince/Lord/duke on marriage to a titled woman. Tim Lawrence is not the Prince Royal. Anthony Armstrong-Jone was made Earl of Snowden but was always “junior” to his wife, not equal.

And what do we know of Edo and Jack? Who do they wear? What surgical enhancements may have they had?

Howsimplywonderful · 12/06/2023 09:42

@LadyWhineglass

Thanks to the Windsors, any time I see Jack’s name I want to shout ‘Tequila’

It could have been a scheduling conflict. He was her barrister but was replaced

That's possible, yes, though it's hard not to notice that the replacement happened just after part of the case was lost

Anyway Sherborne's hardly short of celebrity clients - including the husband now - so doubt he'll be too grieved

Serenster · 12/06/2023 10:33

Personally I think it’s more likely that Meghan changed barristers mid-proceeding (not very common and certainly not done because of minor issues like scheduling) because she was desperate to avoid the claim proceeding to a full hearing where her five friends would have to be revealed and give evidence. So she sought a second opinion from another barrister (Justin Rushbrooke KC) who came up with the idea of trying a summary judgment application, and she switched to instructing him and progressing that. Obviously, that turned out to be a good call.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/06/2023 10:49

Sounds realistic, Serenster, but surely Sherborne could have suggested the route which was eventually taken himself?
I believe it's been said that he's a barrister who relishes the courtroom theatrics of an actual trial, but presumably it can be avoided where that's in the client's best interests?

I was watching a programme on the BBC last night about John McInroe & was struck by his resemblance to Harry, especially when he was annoyed/having a tantrum. Surprised I'd never noticed it before!

Let's hope poor sad Harry get some satisfaction from his day in court.

Serenster · 12/06/2023 11:30

Lawyers, especially very senior lawyers, can quite easily have wildly different views on strategy and tactics, Puzzledandpissedoff! Past experience, professional judgment and ego can all play a part in that.

How right you are!

Harry gives the impression of having a hair trigger temper and control issues.

Ah, fair enough Serenster
I suppose I thought they'd explain all the options, but if they have good reason to resist one of them I guess that would make a difference - after all guiadnace is part of what they're being paid for

polkadotdalmation · 12/06/2023 18:05

Does the evidence of the other witnesses offer any solid evidence?

TrashyPanda · 12/06/2023 18:26

I think Nikki has been an excellent witness.

Phone records from BT or their mobile provider? Witness evidence from a PI admitting he used phone hacking. A witness to say only two people had a private conversation and neither has spoken to someone else but had left a voicemail. Reservations made and only a voicemail left, but somehow the papers found out. Hundreds of possibilties

Roussette · 12/06/2023 20:25

I really don't think a PI, unless called to testify, is going to say he used phone hacking. They just sink back in to the swamp.

I just admire those standing up to this, Nikki Sanderson has been very brave. And there's another two to testify (I think I have that right)
I think it's Michael Le Vell and Fiona Wightman (wife of Paul Whitehouse) who had her medical records illegally accessed whilst undergoing cervical cancer.

I wish them luck. I hope this case is successful.

MayQueeen · 12/06/2023 20:28

Hey folks hope you’re all well 🌞

Thought there was another thread - seems to have disappeared.

Sorry if this has been shared already, someone sent it to me, was surprised to learn guardian journalists were also implicated reg hacking previously. And certainly puts another perspective on the whole state of affairs

Roussette · 12/06/2023 20:38

'Spiked' is a media news source with an extreme right wing bias.

I have read it.
It's not well written and is extremely vitriolic and not unbiaised.

I agree that it's worth a read.
