Well done to the queen for saying no to their offer to 'collaborate' with her

It was clear that a rival court with them being of equal status to HM was being contemplated. You have to admire the cheek, really.

Elior · 11/06/2023 12:07

HIHO was a pathetic idea and as for the collaboration suggestion...😝

Peverellshire · 11/06/2023 12:07

StartupRepair · 11/06/2023 12:03

Half in and half out was clearly a disastrous attempt to openly monetise their status and set up a rival court. Well done to the queen for saying no to their offer to 'collaborate' with her.

Would Charles have agreed & could they have framed it differently to get senior Royals onside and keep door open? Was it a totally unreasonable request & couldn’t a compromise (still?) be reached where they agreed to give slightly ‘more’ in return?

Elior · 11/06/2023 12:11

It could only have worked if they had proven themselves to be diplomatic assets to the monarchy. With the bullying and hoodwinking which had been going on, nobody could be bothered to set up a sham sub structure with lists of fake duties for two liabilities.

Did they ask for the HIHO after the Africa trip and interviews? I think they did but am not sure.

Peverellshire · 11/06/2023 12:18

@Elior but what if the, never proven, bullying, was all part of an orchestrated hate campaign and they are simply not as bad as painted? And even if true to a degree, ‘not bothering’, would surely ultimately prove too high a price to pay?

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:19

There wasn't time for compromise, they released a statement! , they had already copyrighted Sussex royal and started on the plan, there was no choice but to say no .

upinaballoon · 11/06/2023 12:20

The late Queen had the experience of Sophie and Edward 'earning their livings'. That would surely have influenced her thinking.

Since the report was never released, we were left to draw conclusions from anecdotal evidence. I feel that if the report had been favourable to them then they would absolutely have found a way to let everyone know. The fact that they have revealed so much about their thoughts and feelings but sidestepped this topic suggests that it was not.

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:21

Not to mention the Canada plan, the Canadians were quite rightly up in arms about the possibility of paying for their security!

In that case surely they should have realised it was extremely unwise? A softer, authentic (my goodness, H has grounds) & slower approach may have been far more productive?

TrashyPanda · 11/06/2023 12:24

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain - cheek or delusional?

or both?

@Elior , I think we can guess what the report might tell us, Harry told us a few snippets in his book!
Staff in tears , overwhelmed and given gifts that they weren't supposed to keep! ( royals not staff!)
This from his own mouth means that it's likely the bullying rumours are probably true!

Elior · 11/06/2023 12:27

To date, I have seen no evidence that they require the level of security which they claim to need. It really smacks of Kardashian-style self-promotion "Oh look at us arriving with our entourage of SUVs and team of top security beef to walk around an empty mall with Backgrid pretending that they've randomly spotted us! We are sooooooooooo visible!"

Maybe the Queen (who knew them both) personally decided the proposal to cash in on Royal titles and get all the perks while literally selling the name was too high a price to even consider? Ultimately, she decided that “fully out” was the only course of action to take, as anything else was taking the piss and was too high a price to pay.

they gambled - and they lost. They lost everything - including family, status and security. And since then they have steadily lost the respect of the public.

was that too high a price to pay in order to trade in on his status? Only they can decide.

Failure to see anyone's point of view but their own once they'd decided what they want? and a fundamental misunderstanding (understandable from Meghan's point of view, much less so from Harry's) about what monarchy is about and how it functions?

Thanks Did you note ‘Archie stayed behind with a nanny whilst Meghan came to London to launch their business venture’.

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:43

Yes @Peverellshire , I found that interesting, although I was more gob smacked at the procurement of rights to trade mark and sell Sussex royal on t-shirts and lunch boxes ( might not have said that!) and other items!!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/06/2023 12:44

Would Charles have agreed & could they have framed it differently to get senior Royals onside and keep door open? Was it a totally unreasonable request & couldn’t a compromise (still?) be reached where they agreed to give slightly ‘more’ in return?

They did "leave the door open", right up to the point when H&M made it clear they weren't coming back - though given what's since come out about things H&M had put in place there probably wasn't any point even in that

As for agreeing "slightly more", it seems increasingly to be the case that absolutely nothing would ever have been enough unless it was precisely what H&M wanted, even when their wants were patently absurd

And as a PP rightly reminded us, these decisions were made on the basis of actually knowing the couple, whereas none of us do ...

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:48

@Puzzledandpissedoff , I imagine the Queen would have been aghast at them selling tat with Sussex royal on it!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/06/2023 12:48

I was more gob smacked at the procurement of rights to trade mark and sell Sussex royal on t-shirts and lunch boxes (might not have said that!) and other items!!

In fairness I'm pretty sure that trademarking a name for such items doesn't necessarily have to be because the owners wish to use them in that way ... more to stop others from doing so

I'm not aware that H&M have yet produced lunch packs with their names on - not even the ones M was filmed handing out to the underprivileged - but who knows what'll happen in future?

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:51

Sorry @Puzzledandpissedoff , I added the Lunch boxes!

News that the couple already had trademarked the brand name SussexRoyal with the U.K. Intellectual Property Office — and the right to use it on a range of products, including hoodies, pyjamas and socks — encouraged speculation that they are planning to cash in on their royal name as they start their new "financially independent" life.
It was this from the article.

jeffgoldblum · 11/06/2023 12:52

Not sure where the cross out came from!

ArcaneWireless · 11/06/2023 12:56

Aye puzzled

Sometimes folk just get set on an idea and nothing else can be said to persuade them otherwise.

It is a shame but in my very humble opinion, the decision made was correct. And was made with them having way more insight than us.

Perhaps an ever hanging possibility of further demands or ultimatums just wasn’t that pleasing a thought.

We don’t know.

Sometimes I think nothing would have been good enough. Unless of course he had been born first. I somehow think things wouldn’t have felt quite so toxic to him then.
