What are you eating at your Coronation Party?

I was going to have a BBQ but I am not convinced we will have the weather for one.

Sandwiches, scones and cakes could be a option but might be a bit twee and not too filling?

I worry with frozen party food it's too much like a kids birthday party.

I don't want to spend ages over the stove either!

We will be about 8 adults, a few teenagers and a few kids. We like a drink so plenty of beers and wine but the food is stumping me!

What are you having to eat on Saturday?

The more I think about it the less spinach I want in a quiche.

Anyway, on the cost aspects (and asking neutrally as I'm not one of his subjects, though like him I have an Orthodox born parent) is there actually a breakdown?

I saw a French TV clip (in English) saying 120m Euros:

How much will King Charles III's coronation cost and who will pay? - Coronation Countdown (france24.com)

LBC saying £100m:

How much is King Charles III's Coronation going to cost and who pays for it? - LBC

And what is it actually spent on? The first link says 'security' is a big part. Is that overtime and barrier hire?

The second mentions revenue from selling the TV rights. Really?

Am merely curious and have neither an axe nor a sceptre to grind in this. However, I really might make a quiche, but going easy on those beans too.

Coronation Countdown - How much will King Charles III's coronation cost and who will pay?

Ahead of King Charles III's coronation ceremony on May 6, many people are asking how much the event is going to cost and who will pay for it. Will it be the royal family themselves, or will British taxpayers…

I am from another country, and so I am seeing this as an outsider.

Firstly.... Wtf is this quiche with broad beans in all about? Who decided this, and why broad beans? We even had a discussion about it and decided that it must be because it's vegetarian and that broad beans are popular / very British / filling. We didn't all agree on the latter. (we don't get these beans, but I have tasted them and wouldn't like to ever again).

Secondly, even here on the news we are hearing about the UK cost of living crisis. We hear of the strikes, and the appalling state of the NHS. So I just simply cannot wrap my head around spending this amount of money on ONE occasion, to most likely have to spend it all again in the not too distant future when it's William's turn.

We tried to find a breakdown of what makes up this 250million but couldn't seem to find it. On top of that we are thinking there will be sales of merchandise as well.

It has been quite the talking point here in the southern hemisphere.

Do you mean blind baking the pastry? You cook it with beans in before adding the filling so it stays crispy. You line the quiche with baking paper, bake for a short time and tip the beans out before filling properly and cooking through. I've never heard of beans in a quiche https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/videos/techniques/how-blind-bake-pastry-video/amp

I might have a go with the quiche, I like broad beans and have a bag in the freezer so I could probably modify the recipe quite a bit but still keep the general idea.

eveoha · 30/04/2023 19:42

umble pie as all us proles should 👍🏿☘️

I'd love that. I'd have a nice cream tea whilst watching the ceremony on tv, bliss 👑 🫖 🍰 🥪

Thank you for framing it that way! I'd planned to do scones etc with the kids (teens!) Including strawberries as they requested on Monday so felt a bit disappointed. But I think I'll make scones Saturday morning as they should still be good Monday for the kids. Afternoon tea for me and watching it.

It sounds like one of those recipes modified to squeeze in as many veg as possible. That quiche would not go down well in France.

No, the ingredient in this quiche is broad beans.

It seems no one knows why such a bizarre ingredient to add in.

Maybe there is an excess of these beans around at the moment that need to be sold.? Just another idea for the randomness.

I shall get a Coronation Colin from M&S and some of the M&S coronation chicken crisps, also some summer fruit and clotted cream. I'm hoping the Waitrose summer rhubarb trifle is in stock, I wanted one this weekend but there weren't any.

Oof that trifle sounds good.

I am going to just do a mix of sandwiches with nice fillings, a variety of cakes etc and lots of fizz!

DarkForces · 01/05/2023 17:46

@isthismylifenow you're right. B-road beans in quiche sounds like a squidgy tasteless mess and I love B-road beans. The texture is all wrong in a quiche though. Yuck

Vitriolinsanity · 01/05/2023 20:30

My bestie is on the case, with her daughter that would smash Bake Off.

We have The Quiche
Poached salmon sandwiches
Scones
Victoria sponge with pistachio cream
Coffee and walnut

Cannot wait!

Vitriolinsanity · 01/05/2023 20:32

@DarkForces sauté them in garlic Game changer.

Vitriolinsanity · 01/05/2023 20:34

Forgot mini pavlova

Fullrecoveryispossible · 01/05/2023 20:41

Ooh this thread is getting me excited! Sod all those who can be party poppers about anything!
we are doing coronation chicken sandwiches (M&S have a very lurid looking coronation sauce but feel I should make my own), the Quiche ‘La Reign - with extra cheese and locally foraged wild garlic as apparently it’s a bit bland), crudités and dip, homemade summer pudding and kit royals. Also made scones today to enjoy in the lead up.

LobsterBiscuit · 01/05/2023 20:42

Sandwiches
A big sausage roll
Strawberries and grapes
Crisps
Pavlova
Victoria sponge
Tea
Prosecco
Orange juice

Pulled pork or brisket later on

peachescariad · 01/05/2023 20:47

Having 4 neighbours round for a bbq, but reading this thread I might now go for pulled pork and poached salmon and hot mini roasted potatoes, salads etc. And a cheesecake made with baileys orange truffle.

MayQueeen · 01/05/2023 20:47

Lots of lovely ideas!

Tempted to try making the quiche, I guess it’s basically similar to making a flan?

Vitriolinsanity · 01/05/2023 20:51

I have just ordered Coronation Colin.

Totally over excited 😆

I got my Coronation Colins today, a large one and a pack of mini ones, there weren't that many large ones so I bought them now, date was quite long on them, about 2 weeks.

The amount it brings in In tourism far outweighs rhe cost. It is estimated to be at 1 billion extra , for the uk economy on that weekend, from pubs, hotel rooms, restaurants, travel, even folks selling merchandising.

the queens jubilee made an additional 7 billion in that weekend.

so the coronation is a massive boost to the uk economy. I’m really surprised so many folks don’t understand it’s a tourist draw.

Where on earth do you get those figures????

😮😮😮

Roussette · 01/05/2023 21:32

I've just been 5 days with my adult DCs and their partners for a special event/holiday

Not once was the coronation even mentioned! It means absolutely nothing to us.

Sorry? Not 'a fan' of anyone. I left 'fan' days behind 40 years ago.

I'm commenting on the coronation and the disinterest in my family, allowed on a discussion forum I think you'll find
