What are you eating at your Coronation Party?

I was going to have a BBQ but I am not convinced we will have the weather for one.

Sandwiches, scones and cakes could be a option but might be a bit twee and not too filling?

I worry with frozen party food it's too much like a kids birthday party.

I don't want to spend ages over the stove either!

We will be about 8 adults, a few teenagers and a few kids. We like a drink so plenty of beers and wine but the food is stumping me!

What are you having to eat on Saturday?

It's my eldests 21st birthday so we are going out for a meal - big surprise for him with loads of family and friends.

MummyJ12 · 30/04/2023 17:45

On Saturday I’m going to have afternoon tea with my mum and we’re watching the ceremony on the tv.
On the Sunday, my two best friends, our husbands, children and I are all getting together and hopefully having a picnic in our local park which is a few doors down from where we live. A local caterer is doing a special coronation picnic hamper so we’ve ordered that and are splitting the cost as it saves us the who is bringing what dilemma. If the weather is bad then we’ll have it at ours inside.

RedHeadsUnite · 30/04/2023 18:00

Small gathering here. Really looking forward to it!
Food will be Coronation chicken, wholemeal pitta bread, a selection of veggie Indian snacks (samosa, bhaji), various salads. Then Prosecco and a huge Victoria sandwich.

PollyPeptide · 30/04/2023 18:09

Oh yes, right royal afternoon tea on the Saturday. 🇬🇧 Then on Sunday we're having cake and prosecco on the village green. 👑 🍰 🥂

annonymousmouseinyourhouse · 30/04/2023 18:12

I wasn't doing anything but seeing some of these spreads, maybe I can come to your house Grin

Awww lovely! Have a wonderful celebration.

AnneLovesGilbert · 30/04/2023 18:14

We’re going to a village picnic so usual sandwiches etc. Mum is joining us and angling for a vegan version of the quiche. Not what I’d planned but she’s a diamond so I’m considering it…

jay55 · 30/04/2023 18:15

I don't know where I'll be yet. But I fancy making some jam tarts.
And wherever I am there will be strawberries, raspberries and clotted cream.

Bluebells1970 · 30/04/2023 18:15

We're having mini filled rolls with smoked salmon and cream cheese; coronation chicken and ham/cheese for the grandkids. Then small scones with clotted cream and jam and Jane's patisserie coronation cake which looks really patriotic. And home made sausage rolls with a brie and cranberry version for the veggies. I've just had a trial run today of some gluten free cupcakes for the coeliacs in the family too, and they were really impressive so will make enough for all. With lots of prosecco left over from Christmas - be glad to get rid of it!

dizzygirl1 · 30/04/2023 18:18

I didn't realise it was the Saturday, assumed it was Monday. So I'll be alone (kids at their dads) nothing planned or bought. A little bit sad at that actually. Oh well.

I am from another country, and so I am seeing this as an outsider.

Firstly.... Wtf is this quiche with broad beans in all about? Who decided this, and why broad beans? We even had a discussion about it and decided that it must be because it's vegetarian and that broad beans are popular / very British / filling. We didn't all agree on the latter. (we don't get these beans, but I have tasted them and wouldn't like to ever again).

Secondly, even here on the news we are hearing about the UK cost of living crisis. We hear of the strikes, and the appalling state of the NHS. So I just simply cannot wrap my head around spending this amount of money on ONE occasion, to most likely have to spend it all again in the not too distant future when it's William's turn.

We tried to find a breakdown of what makes up this 250million but couldn't seem to find it. On top of that we are thinking there will be sales of merchandise as well.

It has been quite the talking point here in the southern hemisphere.

The amount it brings in In tourism far outweighs rhe cost. It is estimated to be at 1 billion extra , for the uk economy on that weekend, from pubs, hotel rooms, restaurants, travel, even folks selling merchandising.

the queens jubilee made an additional 7 billion in that weekend.

so the coronation is a massive boost to the uk economy. I’m really surprised so many folks don’t understand it’s a tourist draw.

soundsys · 30/04/2023 18:18

We weren't planning to do anything but the kids are suddenly very keen. So I've put the menu in their hands and it's: chocolate fingers, picnic eggs, different flavours of crisps and blackcurrant squash. Which is at least cheap and easy for me!

RedRiverShore3 · 30/04/2023 18:24

I shall get a Coronation Colin from M&S and some of the M&S coronation chicken crisps, also some summer fruit and clotted cream. I'm hoping the Waitrose summer rhubarb trifle is in stock, I wanted one this weekend but there weren't any.

I'd love that. I'd have a nice cream tea whilst watching the ceremony on tv, bliss 👑 🫖 🍰 🥪

Tender, cheesy scones split and topped with a decadent salmon mixture. You could also use hot smoked salmon fillets here, for a speedier finish.

I'm sorry that this thread has offended some people - it really wasn't the intention.

I am simply looking forward to a nice day spent with loved ones, the fact that it is the coronation is irrelevant really but it's a nice theme, a bit like a Eurovision party or Halloween. We are all feeling the COL crisis, but we must enjoy life where we can.

We are not all feeling the CoL crisis, and we are certainly not all feeling it to the same extent. The problem is some people can't afford to enjoy life at all.

I haven't found your thread to be offensive, I just find it galling that the RF are spending so much.

The tourism figures are always spurious - bank holidays cost a lot as they affect business productivity.

mamaduckbone · 30/04/2023 18:49

I'll be at a rugby tournament, so probably a burger or some such healthy fare.
Not at all fussed about the coronation though. Maybe I'll make some scones or a Victoria sponge in honour of the occasion because any excuse for cake

MMBaranova · 30/04/2023 18:55

I might make 'the quiche' with ham hock or bacon. And go easy with the spinach and beans. So something a bit like the quiche.

LittleBearPad · 30/04/2023 19:07

Sandwiches, scones, coronation chicken! Then a bbq in the evening!

Cheekymaw · 30/04/2023 19:11

@HigherPower exactly,my friend. So many people struggling. Hard working people, disabled people , children struggling. This Coronation is an obscene indulgence.

You’re clutching now when you’re now taking against folks getting a holiday. 😂

You don't need to apologise. Some people don't like the royal family and so constantly look to take offence. Its like a hobby for them.
Personally, I'm glad you started the thread because its good to seems many people looking forward to the day and taking the opportunity to have a good time.

PollyPeptide · 30/04/2023 19:17

@HotelNotPortofino That veggie tart looks really interesting. I'm going to give it a go.

I'm happy to make use of a bank holiday of course - I'm just saying the tourism figures alone are not the whole story - businesses do not make money when shut.

Those who very vocally support the RF do talk an awful lot of shit about how much value they add to the economy. Versailles attracts plenty of tourists I hear.
