BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

Fuck no!

Due to the fact he was born into the right family? At least Paul Chuckle got to where he is by using his talent.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/04/2023 19:28

Andrew is not an heir of Charles.

It would obviously take an extremely unlikely chain of tragedies to happen, but Andrew IS still a potential heir to the throne, albeit he is a sibling of Charles rather than a descendant.

The use of the word 'heir' is clearly in the context of the succession of monarchs and not exclusively referring to the issue of any one monarch.

BeatricePortinari · 30/04/2023 19:35

Well I won't be watching as I have a prior engagement, but if I was watching I would.

For me the crown is symbolic, and the monarch a symbol of that. It symbolises a shared history, a shared future and represents that we are a collective and not just separate individuals. If you see it this way the monarchy is uniting.

It's nothing to do with the monarch as an individual, you'll get good and bad monarchs. They are not better or superior people, but they represent the values we should collectively hold as highest, and this is a role and a duty assigned to them.

Because that's how I see I'd have no problems swearing allegiance, I'd be swearing allegiance to the symbol and what it represents not him personally.

It's like Americans swearing allegiance to the flag. We just embody this into a person who has this symbolic role.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2023 20:13

Of course not

It's a useful suggestion in its way though, in showing exactly what this individual considers appropriate. I always believed he'd help the republican cause, but perhaps didn't think he'd start on it so soon

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/04/2023 20:21

They are not better or superior people, but they represent the values we should collectively hold as highest, and this is a role and a duty assigned to them.

Unless I'm very, very much mistaken, the way the very few people who end up getting to be the monarch behave and live their lives suggests that they themselves DO believe themselves to be far better and superior people to everybody else.

I can think of no other reason why they would, with a completely straight face, bang on about how passionate they are about sustainability and protecting the environment whilst living as wantonly, opulently and arrogantly as they do.

We regularly hear statistics telling us that we would need something like 4 Earths to sustain us all if everybody in the world lived at the same level of consumption as your average person in a developed western country; how many thousands of Earths would we all need if every inhabitant lived at the same flagrant standard of luxury as the British royals?

And it isn't an inevitability of having a royal system; plenty of other countries' royals seem to manage with living lives that aren't specifically designed to cram their boots with gold at every single turn.

I would rather shit in my hands & clap.

😂😂😂😂

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 30/04/2023 20:56

DidyouNO interesting response.

Charles Windsor has admitted his adultery himself, it is not a case of trusting the media.

But if you don't "trust the media 100%" and you don't know the family, what sways you towards thinking they are good and honorable people?

I have a relative who would rather blindly worship the Windsors than do a bit of basic research. Not saying that is you too though, of course.

CathyorClaire · 30/04/2023 21:11

The only way that anybody could possibly get the person out of the role - and understand that I am NOT advocating or recommending this in any way - would be to kill them

TBF they could always walk away of their own accord.

Personally I think there should have been a graceful dying of the light once the late Q popped.

This has tipped me over into being a republican.

Welcome to the dark side 😎

Genuinely confused why any one thinks this old man is better than them? I don’t get it.

Perfect, I am in sympathy with your sentiments, despite my liking for (some of them), and fascination with the royal family.

Mysterian · 30/04/2023 23:23

@vera99 That wasn't aimed at the queen. That was for the government.

Topseyt123 · 01/05/2023 03:53

DidyouNO · 30/04/2023 19:19

Sorry, I don't wish to share my views on this. I will say that I don't trust the media 100% to make an informed view and I do not know the royal family personally to know what exactly happened in all these cases you list.

I was asked if I'd swear allegiance. Which I absolutely will. I am very proud of the royal family as I said previously.
I hope that satisfies your rather bizarre curiosity over my choices considering it affects you in no way whatsoever. Thank you.

You hadn't given these issues any consideration then.

I am not anti-royal and don't say get rid of them or anything like that, but swearing allegiance is taking it too far. There have been some major balls-ups by them and at times they have made an utter hash of things. Very publicly too obviously. Because they are no better than any of the rest of us.

Why do they deserve allegiance?

Yeah that's definitely a no for me. What was Charles thinking with this idea?

Cheguevarahamster · 30/04/2023 18:28

That's a hard pass from me. I'm a citizen not a feckin subject. Charles should be swearing allegiance to the people of the UK.

The sooner this lot are abolished the better. Bring on the republic.

Spot on! If he had any nouse at all he would be swearing his allegiance to the great British public. Maybe he does during the ceremony for all I know but the PR surrounding this has been handled dreadfully and this does not bode well for the future. That anyone would think this appropriate in the 21st century I mean? Deluded and utterly tone deaf!

User17439876 · 01/05/2023 06:42

I can't really get worked up about it, we don't have to do anything, there are several threads on this, people must be spending a lot of their life thinking about this.
