BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

No

sausagelastrange · 30/04/2023 16:20

😂🤣😂🤣
Hard no from me

Hbh17 · 30/04/2023 16:25

Why not? He is my Sovereign, after all. But ultimately it's personal choice, so everyone can do / not do whatever they want and thus it's no big deal either way.

Viviennemary · 30/04/2023 16:33

No. Absolute madness.

DeadButDelicious · 30/04/2023 16:44

Fuck that noise.

Topseyt123 · 30/04/2023 16:51

Not only will I not swear allegiance as I already said, I just don't understand the line that says "May the King live forever" at all. Of course he won't. None of us will.

Has that line always been in the service, or is it newly written too? Seems ridiculous to me and could easily be taken out.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 16:55

It's new

The swearing allegience was traditionally done by Lords
It evolved from the fact that 'royalty' is just warlords who needed other warlords to do their fighting for them

Charles is inviting us to do the same
It's now being presented as more 'democratic '
Hmm
Can we have a vote on Charles then ?
Real democracy? .

tinytemper66 · 30/04/2023 16:56

You must be joking. Hell no!

TorringtonDean · 30/04/2023 16:58

I suppose any oath would have as much weight as his wedding vows to Diana! I couldn’t bring myself to utter the words.

Smileyoriley · 30/04/2023 16:58

Definitely a big fat no from the smiley clan!!

bofski14 · 30/04/2023 17:29

What kind of mental illness must you have to believe in this utter tripe? He is a man. A human man. He is not special or magical. He does not care about you no matter how much you lick his boots. It is shameful to have this parading in front of struggling families in the name of "tradition". He's a billionaire and he doesn't even view us as people, just flag waving lemmings.

Yes. Head of a church he is not.

DidyouNO · 30/04/2023 17:34

Yes. I absolutely will. For me it's to what sets us apart and feels very British and in keeping with our traditions. Very proud.

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/04/2023 17:35

No way!

I'd be interested to hear your views on the tax evasions, for instance using the Duchy of Cornwall to avoid tax. Also your views on his adultery and his willingness to bring his sex offender brother back into the limelight.

How do you feel about his friendship with Jimmy Saville? Or about his support (and that of the queen) for the Bishop of Lewes after his sexual offences were brought to light? Whipping a named 17 year old doesn't sit right with me but maybe ok to you?

Are you comfortable with the bloodsports they persue and they way they introduce others, including children, to them?

What are your views on the environmental damage done by the oyster farming in Cornwall?

Are you genuinely proud of all of that?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 30/04/2023 18:14

naked, not named 🙄

Cheguevarahamster · 30/04/2023 18:28

That's a hard pass from me. I'm a citizen not a feckin subject. Charles should be swearing allegiance to the people of the UK.

The sooner this lot are abolished the better. Bring on the republic.

Lisbeth50 · 30/04/2023 19:03

I think the king does make some sort of oath to the people at the coronation.

No one is expected to swear allegiance at all.

I would guess "may the king live forever" is symbolic of monarchy, not literal.

Perhaps we should all watch it to find out exactly what happens before passing judgement?

Treaclemine · 30/04/2023 19:03

He will have just sworn an oath to us.

In a medieval context, the abbey would have been full of barons, and the oath was desiigned to put themat risk of their immortal souls if they rebelled. Didn't help with John. for one.

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 19:11

Roussette · 30/04/2023 09:44

He's in the line of succession. Just like Harry

The allegiance oath does not mention those in line of succession, just our King and his heirs'. It is very clear. Andrew is not an heir of Charles.

Sorry, I don't wish to share my views on this. I will say that I don't trust the media 100% to make an informed view and I do not know the royal family personally to know what exactly happened in all these cases you list.

I was asked if I'd swear allegiance. Which I absolutely will. I am very proud of the royal family as I said previously.
I hope that satisfies your rather bizarre curiosity over my choices considering it affects you in no way whatsoever. Thank you.

Don’t wish to share views on those things. Lol.

I think I will say it having read all these replies. I would rather have Charles than most of you lot as HOS.

But people always say things like this, usually in comparison with a presidential system.

It makes no sense, as you're contrasting a person whom the majority would have to elect, and who could subsequently be voted out again, with a person who is inserted in the role - often planned and identified decades in advance - without anybody having any choice in the matter; and then they stay in the role until the day that they die.

The only way that anybody could possibly get the person out of the role - and understand that I am NOT advocating or recommending this in any way - would be to kill them; but even then, you would only see them replaced by their equally-unvoted-in son or daughter.

At least, in North Korea, they make a pretence of having an election, before officially 'crowning' the pre-determined ruler; we don't even bother doing that!

We love to consider ourselves a modern progressive democracy, but this is patently not the case at all.

Fran2023 · 30/04/2023 19:27

A hard no.
