No surprise he's coming on his own to the coronation.

Ok 👍 misunderstood, apologies.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/04/2023 17:40

Haha, yes, I was all "Way harsh, Tai" for a minute there.

jeffgoldblum · 13/04/2023 17:42

@GrouchyKiwi glad it wasn't just me then! 🤣

Whaeanui · 13/04/2023 17:45

No it was me too 😂 that’s the problem communicating online. We can’t get tone!

jeffgoldblum · 13/04/2023 17:46

True! Sarcasm doesn't translate well here either 🤣

Rhondaa · 13/04/2023 17:51

'Anyway really pleased for Meghan - and admire her courage to set the boundary to a disrespectful British press and entitled palace and say no thanks'

They should either have both come or both stayed away. A unified front would have shown far more 'courage' than leaving a hapless dh to face a mess all of his own making.

thanks, I find it fascinating, so if the royal website I just used is correct , Harry is 5th in line and Edward 14th, so Meghan "outranks" Sophie?

Maybe technically, but apparently amongst the royal family everyone curtsies/bows to the monarch only. So Sophie, a working royal, wouldn’t curtsy to Meghan and Harry anyway.

Thanks for clarifying that again, Seneca - always worth clearing up these confusions. Interesting footnote: Meghan was taught to curtsey by Fergie in a last minute quick lesson before meeting the late Queen. Harry hadn't realised that she was unaware or unpractised in the skill!

Except Meghan already knew how to curtesy, having been taught how to for her role in Suits.

Roussette · 13/04/2023 15:11

I will do one to you if you do one to me, but yours must be much deeper than mine!

curtsy GIF by MASTERPIECE | PBS

For all we know Roussette might actually BE a member of the royal family lurking here and putting us off the scent with all her anti-royal snark!

Exhibity · 13/04/2023 18:09

I'd have thought most actresses would know how to curtsy.

That curtsy in Suits was a slight bob, nothing like the type of curtsy that would be expected by a potential granddaughter-in-law meeting the Queen for the first time.

TrashyPanda · 13/04/2023 18:13

loads of churchgoers of a certain age genuflect, which is basically the same as a curtesy. For an added layer of complexity, some cross themselves at the same time.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/04/2023 18:15

Since Leveson 2 was shelved, some news orgs have continued to behave appallingly and possibly illegally, not just towards the rich and famous, but towards bereaved families and other ordinary people who accidentally become newsworthy
If H&M succeed in holding the UK press to account for this alone, they will have done more for this country than they will ever be given due credit for -

I couldn't agree more, SleightofMind, but still wish Harry wasn't involved.
If it gets into court I worry that his self described attitude to the truth could be an absolute gift to the defence and potentially damage the case

TrashyPanda · 13/04/2023 18:16

The only difference is between a slight bob and a full curtesy is that you bend your right knee more, so your body is lower to the ground.

it’s not like she had to do a triple Salchow!

BlackFriday · 13/04/2023 18:22

"That curtsy in Suits was a slight bob, nothing like the type of curtsy that would be expected by a potential granddaughter-in-law meeting the Queen for the first time."

So, Harry really DID land her in it then, by not explaining this to her in advance for her to practise.

No, a genuflection is where you lower yourself by dipping one knee, lowering the head and crossing yourself. The more pious nearly dip the knee to the floor, the less just a dip and a nod. Both sexes. Not a curtsey.

wordler · 13/04/2023 18:29

I'm not pro Meghan but this is another one of the anecdotes about her which is easily twisted. I don't think she ever really claimed she didn't know 'how' to curtsey.

In her original telling of this on Oprah she said she was surprised that 'behind the scenes' you really did have to curtsey to the Queen each day's first meeting.

And she describes Fergie breathlessly rushing out to teach her how to do it. Which seems like something drama-loving Fergie would enjoy making a big thing about.

But as she'd trained as an actor and taken ballet lessons she would have known and executed various curtsies and bows over the years. Fair enough she might have wondered if there was a specifically British/royal way to do it.

But the main point of the anecdote, and again when she told it in the Netflix doc was her surprise at the formality of the custom.

What stood out for me both times she told this story is what a little toad Harry is, firstly for not preparing her properly with key protocols, and then as he sat by her side for her telling that story in both interviews he didn't speak up and back her up in any way with a "that was my fault, didn't realise it would be so strange for an American to deal with, just so used to it" etc etc.

I've always had the feeling that he was enjoying being a 'disprupter' in the family events and it was all about him and how he felt at bringing a glamourous outsider to smash all the rules. But he totally threw her under the bus to do so.

purpledalmation · 13/04/2023 18:33

The curtseying is just bloody ridiculous and doesn't look right with modern hemlines I think it was kept in respect of the queen, but it should be chucked out with a modern monarchy. A nod of the head for men and women is appropriate to show respect.

Sudeko · 13/04/2023 18:36

Don't the Brits look a sight doing it compared to other royalty!

jeffgoldblum · 13/04/2023 18:40

Not really, I think they all look a bit daft where ever they are from!

jeffgoldblum · 13/04/2023 18:43

So we just get Harry ! , shame I wish he'd stay away , is he going to look miserable and angry the whole time? .
It will definitely put a dampener on the whole occasion if so !

michaelmacrae · 13/04/2023 18:46

This never fails 😂

michaelmacrae · 13/04/2023 18:46

This never fails 😂

She is one of the most ungainly women in public life I've ever seen - remember her dancing?

It's almost like she's too tall for her own body.

wordler · 13/04/2023 19:05

The curtsey looks even weirder in trousers

Harry but not Meghan
KillerSandy · 13/04/2023 19:13

Curtseying isn't that difficult - you do this move all the time when executing a cross behind lunge. 😂
