I have missed out Ardent Productions.

There are some on you-tube - don't know if they were Arden, but were led by a young Edward. I've watched one on Sutton Hoo and another on Hereward the Wake - thought they were rather good

Just an observation in terms of the announcement and timings... whilst the birthday trip to Edinburgh coinciding with the announcement was clearly carefully planned, todays order of service for the Commonwealth Service was published on the W. Abbey website last Monday and so lists Earl and Countess of Wessex. I wonder if the printed versions have been updated? Probably not?

OutOfChocolate · 13/03/2023 14:44

So it was a last minute decision, interesting.

Why is that necessarily so? Have the printed orders of service been produced or are they in the public domain? They may have been printed correctly and the web version left with their previous titles so as not to let the cat out of the bag. Jumping to conclusions here.

Not telling the abbey printers, and risking it leaking before the official announcement, doesn’t necessarily mean it was a last minute decision

Coxspurplepippin · 13/03/2023 14:49

Also, how long do you think it would have been before someone at the printers tipped off the press - hey look, duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.......

Coxspurplepippin · 13/03/2023 14:50

X-post

Lochroy · 13/03/2023 14:53

No, I doubt it, I just mean it's interesting that some things can't keep up with the news. I guess it's inevitable, but we're so used to instant updates in a digital world.

Oh come on. The different retailers they use don't leak even the most anodyne information about them.

IcedPurple · 13/03/2023 14:53

You don't just cobble together a royal visit to a major city at the 'last minute', for obvious security and logistical reasons. Edward and Sophie's visit had clearly been planned well in advance. Plus it was his birthday and many people had been speculating for some time that he would be granted the Dukedom on that day.

So the printers could well already know as per my previous post 🤷‍♀️

Foreversearch · 13/03/2023 15:52

I had read somewhere that KC was waiting for H & M to decide whether or not to use the Prince/ess titles before announcing Edwards promotion to DoE so it didn’t upset H & M or give them more ammunition.

I expect plans to visit Edinburgh were already mapped out and could be put in place quickly. The managed the huge logistical challenge of the Queen’s death and funeral in a short space of time because the plans were already in place.

The sussexes got fed up of Charles leaking to the press that he may change the letters patent or he may not. So they announced the titles and forced Charles to make a public decision.

OutOfChocolate · 13/03/2023 19:31

And it all made Charles look very weak.

But why did they wait so long? And why didn’t they use the titles that the children already had, if titles were important to them (the parents, not the children of course). And he could still change the LP’s retrospectively if he wanted to. So I don’t think they forced him to do anything. They blinked first and the Palace said “ok then 🤷‍♀️”

OutOfChocolate · 13/03/2023 19:56

Presumably they waited so long because Charles kept saying he would made a decision.
Charles seems a weak man, Maybe all they wanted was a decision one way or another?

IcedPurple · 13/03/2023 19:59

There was no 'decision' to be made. From the moment Charles became king, the children were Prince and Princess. The only question was whether or not their parents wished for them to use those titles. They could have 'announced' their wish to do so at any point since September but for whatever reasons, chose not to. That's on them.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 13/03/2023 19:59

His decision was clear from the second he didn’t issue a statement or LPs.

The titles were there and they waited for the parents to state one way or the other if they intended to use them.

Nothing weak in that that I can see. H & M have made it clear they are making their own decisions - leaving them to do that is simply respecting their choices.

Can only imagine the frothing of some on here had the palace updated the children’s titles before H & M had decided

Well, thats a possibility I suppose, however, I'm thinking more along the lines of KC saying 'well when you have made your minds up as to whether you want the titles or not then let me know and I'll have the book updated accordingly, until then I've got other more pressing things to be getting on with because not everything revolves around you two wallies, you know where to find me'.

We have now had the public announcement from the couple and so the book has been updated. Nothing else to see here.

OutOfChocolate · 13/03/2023 20:05

But Harry had always said he wanted the titles as he felt it was up to his children whether they gave them up, not a decision he should make. So Harry had already decided and made that public.

When did Harry say this?

He didn't seem to want his children to decide if they wanted to be Earl of Dumbarton and Lady Lily, did he? Is it only the grander titles he cares about?

OutOfChocolate · 13/03/2023 20:09

Harry said that in the interview with Oprah in 2021. He was very clear and explicit about it.

KrasiTime · 13/03/2023 20:10

The titles were theirs as soon as Charles became King. Nothing about for his hand or him being weak.

I should imagine the courtiers were waiting to see if the Sussexes wanted to go down the Wessexes (now Edinburgh) route & have dcs styled Lord & Lady or go down the Yorks route & have prince & princess.

Interestingly they have chosen to go down PA route.

He didn’t do that at any point though.

His children both could have had titles from birth.

Clear about what?

His son was already entitled to be Earl of Dumbarton at that point. Was Harry 'explicit' about why he didn't want him to use that particular title?
