What happened to just call me Harry? Why would they want their children to be burdened with titles?

“When reached by PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: "I can confirm that Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on Friday, March 3 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor."

I do understand why they want the option of titles. At the end of the day, they will be able to monetise being Prince Archie/Princess Lilibet if they want/need too one day.

Hopefully, they both get great educations and managed to have fulfilling lives and careers without having to resort to that.

Meghan is well educated and bright and I am sure Harry would love his children to just be happy and not in the spotlight.

This! A positive, nice comment.

I imagine Harry and Meghan want the kids to have the option to make their decisions re their titles when they are older.

Its their birthright, after all.

Er, this is the exact opposite of dropping it!

In fact it was so covered up that the wartime govt and the RF knew about it, were concerned about it and it was one reason why EVIII wasn't allowed back to the UK during the war and was shuffled off to where he could cause the least trouble and be kept under the eye of the security services; and so covered up after the war that there have been numerous books, articles and TV programmes about it.

It is her birthright, whether people agree with it or not.

Yes it is her birthright. But during the Oprah interview they implied that the birthright was going to be removed because of their grandmother being a woman of colour. That's what's odd. It seems the birthright hasn't been removed after all? Maybe it was going to be of course, and after Oprah the Queen had to back down?

They've just announced that they've got these titles, but without actually announcing it directly, so that presumably they don't have to apologise for casting aspersions on the RF about the titles during the Oprah interview.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/03/2023 17:41

I get that these are desperate days when the bloke you've been holding up as some sort of republican hero shows himself, not for the first time, to be more royalist than all the 'royalists' you rail against

This is what I find baffling. If Harry got his 'apologies' and 'accountability' that he's demanding he'd be back in the RF and asking for his privileges and appointments back faster than a rat up a drainpipe, and yet he's been positioned as some sort of republican poster boy.

I think I have reached peak Mumsnet batshittery - Justine was right some posters re Meghan are simply deranged, shame I don't profit from it like she does though !

What is it with all these people quoting “Justine” like she’s their mate?

Your old mucker Justine profits out of you too you know, @vera99.

I don't get your reasoning here. How would not imposing the titles on the kids now take away the 'option of titles' when they are adults, if they are still entitled to them then? That's what the Wessexes have done.

I think growing up in California with British royal titles is actually quite a burden on children. But then I didn't insist on my own Sussex Royal monogrammed doormat.

I was wondering the same. Is 'Justine' so famous that we only need to refer to her by her first name, like Beyonce or Adele?

Why do all you sad acts care?

Also in general right wing media seems to always say Harry and Meghan previously have stated so and so. But there are never any direct quotes. If anyone has proof he has ever stated he doesn’t want his own titles or his children to have no titles please share it

Agreed!! They are such a two-faced, grasping pair - using the RF to suit their own nasty agenda! There are no depths to which this couple of hypocrites will not plunge!!

Surely a Princess of the United Kingdom ought to have been baptised in said United Kingdom, not America?

As for the other names aforementioned for other younger Royals - they were never going to be Prince or Princess!!

You do understand, the king is Harry's dad?

You do understand, Lilibet is the king's grandchild?

You do understand, we are just commoners on mumsnet, going on about something that has zero impact on our lives at a time when many are struggling to heat their homes in a country that will put on a big show to crown a king in a couple of months?

The irony of it all...

Hooklander · 08/03/2023 17:45

I wonder if Oprah Winfrey feels uncomfortable at all, looking back on that televised interview? She has a professional reputation as a consummate interviewer, and yet there would appear to be some issues with the narrative she elicited.

Sagharbor · 08/03/2023 17:46

Chasedbythechaser · 08/03/2023 16:30

Totally agree.

The irony is t lost on those claiming that using titles is meaningless etc when the same people are quick to correct people saying Kate Middleton should be addressed as Princess Catherine etc.

So many anti H&M posters on the MN thread are beyond salvation. They are plainly insular little flag wavers. There is no point trying to reason. Leave them in their cesspit.

Hear! hear!

Couldn't have said it better.

I've mentioned this several times, only one poster seems to remember the lack of titles because of racism! 🤷‍♀️

Nice attempt at deflection. It’s what she said and how correct she was/is about deranged anti M&H posters .

If we can't post about something relatively trivial because there are worse things happening out there in the real world, then that pretty much destroys the whole reason for a site that hosts discussion threads about things that aren't necessarily of earth shattering importance except to the people who are experiencing them.

What are we allowed to go on about?

Or Michele O?

Any other suggestions?

Yes Meghan said in the Oprah interview

Meghan replied: “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we [had] the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 08/03/2023 17:50

Why? They are not working royals. It was a private ceremony so if legal they can hold it on a remote Island if they want. I don't see what the issue is. I hope any pictures will be released on their terms. Good for them!

BalloonSlayer · 08/03/2023 17:51

It's perfectly likely that like any other married couple they disagree on some things and both struggle to get their own way.

Harry - titles are an absolute burden and prevent you from leading a normal life. Announces: My children won't have titles.

Meghan - the fuck am I marrying into your godawful family and not having my kids called Prince and Princess when their grandfather is the King!

Eventually he agrees. . .

I am not a fan but if there was a chance my DC could have been called Princes or Princesses I would have grabbed it and been highly displeased if anyone had tried to take it away, including my own husband. It's natural to want the very best for your beloved children.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/03/2023 17:51

That rather depends on how much importance you give to her opinions. In my case it's none; altho I find the use of the word 'deranged' on a site that gives such good advice on MH to be slightly distasteful.

"Deflection" from what? Why is 'Justine's' opinion so important? I'm no more interested in what she has to say than I am in any random person on MN, or anywhere else.

Tyler Perry was photographed arriving at Montecito and then going to the Sussexes house last weekend, presumably for the christening. If Oprah or Michele Obama head been there, I think we’d know.

I'm not British but I care about Britain a great deal and I wish that it would become a Republic. These charlatans and chancers from Charles down to the minor ones need to have their titles removed and live as ordinary citizens. It's absolutely repugnant that taxpayers are paying 100 million for the upcoming coronation circus. I include H and M and kids in all of this. They're no better than anyone else, so titles are unnecessary.

How do you know its going to cost 100m? That's just one of those wild possible estimates in the paper. And a lot of that amount is offset by income generated from it. But let's say it did cost 100m with no offsets, in comparison it costs over 100m to have a national election of a head of state - and that would be every 4 years. And that doesn't include inauguration, etc.
So don't you worry about the cost. It would work out more expensive not to have a king or queen.

EdithHowland · 08/03/2023 17:53

Sorry if this has been covered, but was she actually christened Princess as the first name (obviously to be known as Lilibet)? It sounds from the spokesperson as if this were the case Confused .

Oprah did a big interview with Gayle King a day after HMQ died to tap-dance her way out of any association ….. took her 18 months to do so.

But like all the other Netflix, PenguinRandomHouse, Spotify etc it’s all about how many $$$$ can be extracted by playing these two fools.

They are all just huge corporates look for the next revenue stream.

H&M are just one commodity to them - they don’t care about their message.
