The royal family

Drama between Eugenie/Jack and William/Kate

I missed this last year. Apparently Eugenie and Jack had wanted to love into Adelaide Cottage as their main British residence (they also live part-time in Portugal for Jack's work). But William and Kate successfully claimed Adelaide Cottage instead as their fourth or fifth house?
This apparently led to tension between the two families. Instead Jack and Eugenie live in Nottingham Cottage which has two bedrooms. They already have one child and Eugenie is pregnant. I am guessing this is why they wanted a slightly bigger house.

I think they are grace and favour residences and clearly more senior royals get first choice. Any of the homes would be lovely to live in due to their location.

If, as the papers report, W & K move into Royal Lodge then Adelaide cottage becomes available.

Tiny violin. Perhaps anyone who is not happy with their free, fully-secure luxury property could just pay for a house themselves like the rest of us do?

I hear Andrew is not taking this at all well...

AmandaJonah · 01/03/2023 11:44

@tess where do you hear this? Because honestly without evidence I think this is all just rubbish.

The D Mail (I know!) is reporting quite 'firmly' today that H amd M have been evicted from Frogmore Cottage and Andrew has been told he has to move there. If that's true, perhaps W and K will move to Royal Lodge and E and J will have Adelaide Cottage. Where do Beatrice and Eduado live?

AmandaJonah · 01/03/2023 11:49

Ah! Are William and Kate after Royal Lodge?

Beatrice has a place in St James Palace and a house in the Cotswolds.

I thought E and J were now in Portugal.

Come on, you are never going to get a house over the heir to the throne. Not quite sure E should get anything really for free as she isn't a working Royal.

Maybe her parents could help her, oh yes, they have blown all their immense money/privilige.

JenniferBarkley · 01/03/2023 11:57

There's no way W&K are staying long-term at Adelaide, isn't it tiny compared to their other houses?

Regardless of controversies involving Andrew and Harry (n.b. controversies of very different magnitudes!) a reshuffle of the houses was surely to be expected after the Queen died.

Samcro · 01/03/2023 11:59

its shocking that non working royals get to live in royal residences

Meh. The "working royals" is a very small group these days, and there's a huge number of houses. They may as well be used. I believe they pay rent these days.

In the grand scheme of things and all the problems inherent with having a royal family I can't get worked up about it. Lots of people move into their granny's house or whatever.

This with knobs on!

Royal Lodge sounds like a huge money pit. Better for William and Kate to eventually move into Windsor Castle apartments and for The Royal Lodge to be privately rented to a billionaire with deep pockets or turned into a commercial space for events etc so it can pay its way.

Lots of the accommodation is rented out privately - Catherine Zeta Jones has just started renting an apartment in St James Palace.

@JenniferBarkley The Royals do not pay a market rent. They always pay way below what a similar property would cost.

It's all very Regency Novel, isn't it!

Would love my address to be St James Palace! or one of my addresses.......along with my country mansion, natch.

DorritLittle · 01/03/2023 12:39

Surely the houses go with the job and Eugenie and Jack can afford a mortgage?

AmandaJonah · 01/03/2023 12:43

Yes the Royals can afford a mortgage or to buy a house outright. Most of them have a number of houses, some free or cheap from the public and private ones they buy.

Why on earth do you care how another family organises their grace and favour houses - Beatrice is not even a regular working royal.

AmandaJonah · 01/03/2023 13:04

@ittakes2 The comment of mine you shared does not even mention Beatrice.
And Beatrice has a residence at St James Palace.

Totally! Andrew pays £250 per week for 98 acre 30 roomed Royal Lodge. You couldn't get a one bedroomed flat next to the Dartford Tunnel for that!

They are supposed to pay market rent. I read the notes or statement (cant remember which) put out by the committee at the time that oversees the properties. They said as the house could only be let to members of the Royal Family because of security issues, then it was a market rent.

I think if I was Eugenie I would keep my head down and be extremely grateful for every privilege she has and I am sure she has inherited after the death of the Queen.

If the papers are to be believed today, the King isn't going to be shy about evicting non working royals.

ThighMistress · 01/03/2023 14:59

I used to like Eugenie, but it seems lately as if she is a bit…. pushy , making public pronouncements about eco stuff (whilst jet-setting) and generally giving the vibe she has employed PR.

I know Andrew wanted his girls front and centre, and was cheesed off they weren’t on the royal pay roll, so perhaps Eugenie’s trying to wriggle her way in.

AmandaJonah · 01/03/2023 15:04

Yeah Eugenie is friendly and supportive of Harry. So I am sure she will be the next one to be publicly attacked.
