My friend just sent me this. I adore Gabor mate and the work he does. His book 'in the realms of hungry ghosts' was life changing for me who had suffered serious addiction issues. But am I being too harsh to feel disappointed he's jumping on this band wagon of garbage. I'm sorry but Harry we're sick of listening to your trauma and no offence you've sung it to death, (and I don't even think it's that bad relative to how much he has gone on and on about it) and trauma aside you're a complete hypocrite with how you've treated you're family and the trauma you've put them through!!

I can’t see the questions being transparent. Harry is not a good example of therapy working. He’s richer but in the Netflix and the book I do not see a man who is happier. I honestly could not imagine Gabor, or any person dealing with trauma to advocate the way Harry has dealt with his but I don’t see Gabor questioning that.

daretodenim · 26/02/2023 11:50

And yet Gabor himself is sitting with Harry for this discussion. I understand that some of you live in an echo chamber of discontent about how Harry chooses to work through his grief and trauma but you will have to accept the fact that his story resonates with a great deal of people too.

It's all about perspective.

Of course he is. Nobody would pay £17 or whatever it is to watch his unknown, normal-level psychologist daughter talk to Harry.

I think you misunderstand what "grief and trauma" resonating looks like. A great many people with whom his grief an trauma resonate are the ones who don't find this entertaining. We had interest because it resonated, but we stepped back when it became less about grief and trauma and more about a) entertainment b) revenge (which ties in with previous point and c) one man's ego.

I think PH would greatly benefit from prolonged private therapy with Gabor Mate. I'd be happy to hear he'd done that.

Gabor Maté is a physician not a therapist.

I know.

And I still think he'd benefit from that with him!

What matters is that it continues to resonate with some and they will be there. Give this a miss and continue to appreciate Gabor's other work.

@Novella4 I agree with you.

Prince Harry is entitled to discuss his mother however, whenever, and wherever he chooses.

To believe otherwise is astonishingly out of touch with reality and just decency.

His brother William is now a billionaire as a result of being Diana’s son while doing very little that I can see to carry on her legacy. Harry on the other hand had dedicated his life to service in her memory. Even more reason he deserves to speak and support his family while doing so.

Was it? like I said I only caught some snippets. Was it harsher than the Tom Cruise, Kanye or JLo parodies? I still shudder at the treatment JLo got and I wasn't even much of a fan.

Don't liken Harry to Tom Cruise. TC has real talent, works hard and produces films that have made billions of dollars around the world. And as much as I dislike Kanye West and Jennifer Looez, they are genuinely talented.
Harry couldn't even write his own book. He has zippo talent as far as I can see. Which is fine, it makes him like most of us. But it does leave him much more likely to be harmed by criticism which Cruise, West and Lopez can shrug off because they can show a body of past work, with more creativity in the pipeline. Harry not so much. He only has his him mum, dad and granny to sell and that will have ever decreasing returns.

MarshaMelrose · 26/02/2023 12:35

No, he hasn't. He always said before his marriage that he didnt want her talked about all the time. He wants money. That's why he's talking about her. She always sold good copy and she still does.

I asked about the harshness of the parodies and nothing else, only wanted to see if it was worth a watch 😭

You know that his Mum isn't the only person he's lost in his life right? they are also talking about personal healing. Making the book and conversation all about Diana is strange.

Oops. Sorry. I watched it. I don't think SP is funny. I didn't think that this was funny overall, just a couple of bits. A bit ironic that the programme was literally saying they weren't interested in the pair of them whilst dedicating half an hour to talking about them!
It was quite cutting in parts and as both of them seem quite thin-skinned, I think they'll be hurt by it, regardless of what they say. But everyone has made up their mind on them by now. It's not going to change opinions in the long term. Personally, I would say don't bother - you can find better things to do with your time.

PlanetLuna · 26/02/2023 12:49

I agree @tatalan.

And further to @BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood’s comments - Harry does in fact speak about a variety of topics.

For instance, he talks about tabloid and press abuses, excesses and criminality even more than his personal trauma.
And this - taking a stand against the tabloids - is the real reason why he and Meghan have been so vilified by the press - and willingly taken up by members of the public who have bought into the vilification.

Harry’s standing up to the press is extremely courageous, relevant and will benefit us all. We are currently experiencing what happens when propaganda and distractions are substituted for facts & real news. (See tomato-gate, turnip-gate, failed Brexit, NI Protocol lies, Sharp/BBC/Tory bribery scandal, etc.)

That's what he talked about in all his interviews. That's the one part of everything he talks about that always gets him most sympathy and makes him more popular. The organism does what makes the organism successful. That will be what he ends up talking about regardless of what Gabor Maté wants to talk about. Because all questions will be pre-approved just like in all the interviews because when Harry goes off message, he gets in hot water.

@MarshaMelrose

He discussed his Mum in his book, Netflix doc, a handful of interviews over a period of years and this upcoming discussion on grief & trauma. That is hardly “ all the time”😂.

And they are perfectly appropriate venues for those discussions.

For comparison, I discuss my Mum all the time & would love to get paid for it. So what?

I get that he’s not your cup of tea, but
to say her life & legacy hasn’t informed & inspired his dedication to service is absolute rubbish. To say he only discusses her for money is ghoulish and heartless. Wtf.

Blip · 26/02/2023 13:15

I think it would be good for Harry to have therapy sessions with Gabor
IN PRIVATE.

He discussed his mum in his book, the interviews about his book, his netflix doc, his series with oprah, his UN speech, his engagement interview, interviews about his life, interviews from Afghanistan, you're saying this upcoming interview, his complaints about the press, his complaint about Bashir. That's just about everything he's done. So, yeah, I'd say pretty much all the time.

I mean you said it, you discuss your mum all the time and would love to get paid for it. Harry's living your dream, all the while complaining that other people are talking about her. It is ghoulish to centre your world, justify your behaviour, sell your private moments about her, sell your wife's private moments about her (and they never even met!). It is about money. Of course it is.

I've actually been supportive about things both he and Meghan have done. And I don't have a problem about him talking about his mother. I find it tacky that he sells his (self confessed not accurate) memories because he just wants more and more money. He has criticised many people for talking about her (people who probably knew her better than he did actually) in order to make money out of her memory. I've always agreed with him. So it's more than disappointing to see him now doing the same thing.

@MarshaMelrose I totally agree. I am just sick to death of him and his self entitled verbal diarrhoea. That look of distain and nastiness he had at Tom Bradby when challenged about the racial accusation was literally the nail in the coffin. He's unbearable

You are so right here
I know I'm contributing to the distraction every time I say something positive about Harry here - but I do appreciate how he has shown a light in the dark corners of the Faustian pact between the 'royals' and the media .
It's crumbling now which is great to see .

Harry / royals argument is designed in part to keep everyone looking the other way and not ask the real questions such as why the hell we are funding the Windsors in 2023

Not to mention the query on whether they would be keeping the titles lol!

purpledalmation · 26/02/2023 15:31

@Novella4 I agree with you, Harry has shone a light on the hideousness of the British tabloid press. However social media, such as instagram and twitter are far more damaging and less accountable.

I disagree with this 'Faustian pact' idea. The RF do have an agreement with the newspapers to have royal correspondents who are briefed by the various communication teams. Nothing wrong with that, big corporations do the same thing.

This is a far better system than the one Diana had to suffer and is a direct result of her hounding. Unfortunately they are not gagged when it comes to negative stories. It's allowed the royal children to be seen on their first day at school but not constantly papped.

Negative stories are everywhere but that's the price we pay for living in a democracy with free speech. Prefer it to living in Russia.

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 15:36

@purpledalmation

There is far far more to what Harry is saying than the 'royal' rota

William leaks about Harry and Meghan - esp when they were much more popular

'Palace sources ' get the message out while 'royals ' can pretend to stay silent .
Social media can be damaging yes but I'm all for it in general as it stopped the monolithic'news' machine that our grannies belived

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 15:39

I meant to add -Camilla has lots of friends in the tabloids

Willy/ Chalres / Camilla all brief against each other .

God knows why.
It's all seems to be falling apart anyway and I'm glad

Plitvice · 26/02/2023 15:43

But hasn't the playing field of leaks leveled now that Harry got it all off his chest in his own words? He did his best to point out William and Kate's flaws and bad behaviour but even after hearing his long winded case, most people still thought that Harry and his wife were the unreasonable ones and they continue to support the other couple.

TedMullins · 26/02/2023 15:51

laurwalsh · 25/02/2023 23:11

Because for me personal healing is exactly that, personal. And what Harry is doing is anything but. It's not something that should be validated as a way to heal from trauma. If I went out to all my local pubs and family friends and the local newspaper and blogged about it with my side and said everything that's my truth knowing my family can't retaliate and will be exploited I would be wrong. No matter what I e experienced that's not ok. But look I'm obviously In the minority so I'll let it go. I won't be watching in a million years and just genuinely sick of being bombarded with Harry's 'trauma' and his bullshite.

Absolutely disagree that you’d be wrong to do that. More people should publicly talk about family trauma as far as I’m concerned, then it might help break the culture of keeping up appearances over supporting victims and getting justice. Staying silent/private about trauma is how abusers in families continue to abuse. Shout it from the rooftops as far as I’m concerned.
