My friend just sent me this. I adore Gabor mate and the work he does. His book 'in the realms of hungry ghosts' was life changing for me who had suffered serious addiction issues. But am I being too harsh to feel disappointed he's jumping on this band wagon of garbage. I'm sorry but Harry we're sick of listening to your trauma and no offence you've sung it to death, (and I don't even think it's that bad relative to how much he has gone on and on about it) and trauma aside you're a complete hypocrite with how you've treated you're family and the trauma you've put them through!!

Did Harry not do any homework before endorsing this quack?!

We might as well ask if his father did the same over his maunderings influenced by Laurens van der Post and whoever introduced him to sacred geometry - or his mother with her endless round of "healers", psychics and the like

Perhaps Harry's interest in the bizarre isn't surprising after all ...

Howsimplywonderful · 09/03/2023 15:59

Perhaps it’s more surprising that William seems so sensible 😀

You never really know what goes on behind closed doors @Howsimplywonderful , maybe he's into all sorts of mystical stuff! 🤣

Well this is still to be proven.

Interesting to read that Mate Gabor now regrets doing this interview . Among other things , he was uncomfortable that people had to pay.

Gloriously · 21/10/2023 11:26

Yes I saw that recent interview - seemed to imply he had been duped and unaware that people had to pay to watch the interview......seems a bit naive of GM - it was clearly a commercial venture to publicise Spare - not a contribution to public awareness on clinical insights to trauma / MH.

Hmm. More likely he assumed that everyone would be complimentary about the interview and didn't like that not everyone was so he is seeking to distance himself.

musingsinmidlife · 21/10/2023 12:26

Seems that most projects with H and M lead to regrets.

Gabor Mate is almost 80. He likely isn't on social media or getting a feel for the pulse of the population. He is passionate about trauma and pain and I am sure he was given advice that partnering with a royal person about a topic he is passionate about would be a good thing. It wasn't.

If he didn't know - and that's a big if - then it's a pity he didn't enquire more deeply in the way you'd expect a so-called professional to do

OTOH if he did know I'm left wondering if he expected a cut, didn't get it and so has thrown his teddy out of the pram?

ALittleTeawithmilk · 21/10/2023 13:42

Firstly, Gabor Mate didn’t actually regret the interview itself - he regretted that the price to see it was buying Spare: He said that both he and Harry weren’t happy about it and both had requested that the interview be made free to all, but lawyers advice was because it had been sold as ‘exclusive’ (not his word but he used something similar), and doing so would possibly leave them open to litigation.
He said he was very distressed at the media nastiness that was aimed at him after the interview, and eg one title he was given by tabloids - (something like) ‘Merchant of Pain’ was very distressing for him. As a result, he sought psychiatric help and he’s okay now.

I Just looked the you tube video up. “Gabor Mate: the shocking link between kindness and illness”

but the headline used to stir up controversy and interest was ‘Gabor Mate regrets interview with Prince Harry’. That headline was misleading, and what’s new about that?

I Didn’t listen to the whole video. Way too long for me in this case, as I’m not crazy about self/help style videos or books, wellness stuff etc:

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/10/2023 13:52

It's funny that people still believe that what happens on social media represents what the general population actually think. Get outside, talk to real people.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/10/2023 13:54

Thanks for clarifying @ALittleTeawithmilk its amazing that people still believe whatever media are spouting.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/10/2023 14:15

Firstly, Gabor Mate didn’t actually regret the interview itself - he regretted that the price to see it was buying Spare

So if this is correct, it turns out he did know that access to the interview would be "charged" in some form?

Convenient to blame his advisers, legal or otherwise - wonder where he got that from? - but surely if he didn't like the conditions the obvious answer would have been to walk away?

Wheresthebeach · 21/10/2023 14:16

He really ought not to be dragging it up again. Nothing to gain for either of them

CathyorClaire · 21/10/2023 19:58

So if this is correct, it turns out he did know that access to the interview would be "charged" in some form?

He agreed to it out of 'sheer opportunism' apparently.

Trauma expert admits he regrets bombshell interview with Prince Harry about royals - Mirror Online

His usual appearance fee is between $5000 and $10 000 which doesn't seem bad for a couple of hours work but there's no indication as to actual audience numbers (suspect a number would have been journalists itching to file copy) or whether the pay per view fee covered this.

Gloriously · 21/10/2023 20:24

I agree with this. He also had a book to promote or was soon to be launched and this was arguably a huge potential new audience for GM.

Maybe the pay per view didn’t add up to the right numbers - and / or even if it did GM’s own ‘brand’ - was tarnished by being associated with the mockery around Spare.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 21/10/2023 21:59

So he gave an interview with Harry for which people were expected to pay, and made to buy Harry’s book? Honestly how could anyone think either of them have a
shred of integrity?

ALittleTeawithmilk · 21/10/2023 23:03

No one was “made to buy Harry’s book”.

That was the deal - buy Harry’s book and you could see the interview. It was promotional. Harry wrote a book (with Moeringer), and Gabor is some sort of self help person. Where does ‘not having a shred of integrity’ come into it?

They both wanted it to be made available to everyone afterwards. Which is pretty much beside the point anyway.

The way the media and social media carried on afterwards is the point, I think. And sm and media are now carrying on about ‘regrets’. Like a dog with a bone.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, when you raise your head above the parapet in any way. Harry would know this all too well. Hopefully it’s water off a duck’s back for him, by now. Gabor has experienced it in a major way after the Harry/Gabor interview - enough to cause him distress, and for him to be talking about it now. It seems every well known person gets to experience this at some point. The experience for some well known people is that it’s ongoing/seemingly never-ending.

Imo, Gabor has learned that involving himself in any Harry endeavour is going to cost him in terms of media condemnation, and public criticism. There are plenty of people out there who want to find fault with anyone that connects with Harry and/or Meghan in any way.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 22/10/2023 01:24

From his interview, he says people who watched the programme had to buy the book.

But don't we all believe "the media" of one sort or another? Unless one knows the situation or the individual(s) personally, of course.

We all chose which media we believe. Usually the ones which agree with our own beliefs/prejudices.

Practical question: how did this happen logistically?

Gloriously · 22/10/2023 07:36

@BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood yes I saw the GM interview where he said that he didn’t realise that people had to buy Spare to watch - and even if they had already bought it they had to buy a second to watch.

Hooklander · 22/10/2023 07:27

Well presumably you would have to enter your details to watch the interview and the fee would be the price of the book, and then they would send you a copy. I don’t imagine they expected people to just go out and buy it 😂

I had visions Grin

So in order to watch the interview, you had to hand over your name and address when registering and paying?

Or was it a straight $33 fee, and you could hand over your name and address if you wanted a free book i.e. Spare? (Which Gabor Maté seems to think a lot of viewers would have already bought anyway?)

Make it make sense. I'm still trying to understand if he has any kind of point or not, in and of itself.
