My friend just sent me this. I adore Gabor mate and the work he does. His book 'in the realms of hungry ghosts' was life changing for me who had suffered serious addiction issues. But am I being too harsh to feel disappointed he's jumping on this band wagon of garbage. I'm sorry but Harry we're sick of listening to your trauma and no offence you've sung it to death, (and I don't even think it's that bad relative to how much he has gone on and on about it) and trauma aside you're a complete hypocrite with how you've treated you're family and the trauma you've put them through!!

@tatalan It's not a book promo. Spare is already on sale. Didn't you know that?

purpledalmation · 26/02/2023 10:27

It's not even going to be honest. Questions from the audience are going to be filtered and pre approved. God forbid anyone holds him to account.

Real therapy would address his lack of self awareness and delusional thinking.

I'm with Kyle.. sick to death of hearing from this couple.

Hooklander · 26/02/2023 10:28

The common denominator, the link, is ayahuasca I believe?

I think that both Maté and the Duke of Sussex are believers in its powers to tackle addiction, notably drug addiction. However, Maté has simultaneously stated very clearly his belief that without addressing the root cause of childhood traumatic pain, a person may try to desist from drug-taking but will ultimately 'crave further relief and be prone to relapse'.

So it'll be an intriguing conversation, depending on how far they go in looking at the Duke of Sussex's substance abuse and pattern(s) of relapse, now that he's been in California for a good few years with his family and addressed his trauma very publicly and, to some degree, rather sensationally.

For me, there was always something icky about Gabor, I couldn’t put my finger on it and couldn’t progress further with his material a part from a couple of youtube videos…then I saw he was on one same event with Deepak Chopra and that was it! Lost all respect.

milti · 26/02/2023 10:30

Victimhood is their brand - they have little else to sell - so he will keep banging on about it -
of course it’s a book promo - you get a ‘free’ book if you pay to attend

Hooklander · 26/02/2023 10:31

And if you don't, they send you two.

milti · 26/02/2023 10:31

He’s selling his ‘trauma’ not sharing out of the kindness of his frost bitten todger 😂

milti · 26/02/2023 10:33

@Hooklander good one - the only thing worse than reading that ghastly moan tome would be listening to his creepy voice on the audio version

tatalan · 26/02/2023 10:33

StormzyinaTCup · 26/02/2023 10:23

LOL, you know this is more about book promo than anything right? all authors do it, some even do a travelling tour with special guests once the book is released. This just happens to be a virtual version.

Of course it is!
Which goes back to my first post, its likely more chat 'all about poor me' waaaaggghhh and a continuation of 'The Privacy Tour' and an opportunity for Penguin to squeeze out some more sales. Smacks of another PR disaster and another episode for South Park. Funny the worst public slaying of the couple has come from the across the pond and not U.K..

The thing with good PR is to know when to press pause.

Meghan has it right Harry doesn't.

I caught some of the South Park snippets on social media, H&M will be alright. Just like Will, Kate and the Queen were after the arm pegging and suicide parodies.

Anyway, I can't wait for mumsnet to declare this event another pr disaster 😜

7eleven · 26/02/2023 10:37

I would hold off passing judgement just yet. Mate is incredible and authentic. He may very well bring powerful insight to this troubled man.

I wouldn’t yet place it in the silly, sycophantic tv interviews. He will easily be able to deal with PH’s outbursts if challenged.

So? Harry already got paid 😅

I hope he'll be compensated for this event too, he should.

LOOOL

You think this event wouldn't be staged to high heaven?

Come on, this is a fluff promo event, I personally wouldn't be expecting any real-ness which is i'm giving it a miss.

Plus I already bought the book.

Was it? like I said I only caught some snippets. Was it harsher than the Tom Cruise, Kanye or JLo parodies? I still shudder at the treatment JLo got and I wasn't even much of a fan.

Maybe. Maybe not. I was just watching an interview with Mate actually and I think (hope!) this talk could be more sincere.

Hadn't heard of Gabor before so my expectations on his part were non-existent. I'm so tempted to buy a ticket now, seeing people speak so highly of him, I can always donate the extra copy to a library.

Plitvice · 26/02/2023 11:08

The sycophancy comes from people who have not been intimately connected with that scene.

You are in awe of these great men (renowned therapists, famous actors and rockstars/artists/authors) until you catch their eye and they choose to slide into your DMs and you properly get to know them, befriend them, even have relationships with them, get to know them outside of the cult context.

I can assure you that by the time you come through the other side, you will see them differently -a process which can take some years.

Occasionally, they get exposed but they ultimately stay popular because I am describing the experience of a minority.

Can't figure out if this is about Harry or Gabor.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 26/02/2023 11:18

Harry needs to find something else to talk about other than trauma and how hard done by he has been. It’s become very very boring. Lots of people have experienced awful things. They don’t make their whole modus operandi about that trauma.

He doesn't need to do anything, this conversation may be boring for you but helpful for others. Simply give the event a miss and ignore any articles written about it 🙃

tatalan · 26/02/2023 11:26

I mean, look at this one, rant rant rant but bought a ticket 😂

Call an event a shameless money grab then contribute, no refunds allowed either.

@purpledalmation of course it’s book promo! They share a publisher, who has organised it and is giving “free” books (to an audience who have presumably mostly already bought it)

Sounds like a disturbing experience, but surely you’re not generalising to a whole sector/s of people?

that wouldn’t be rational or reasonable.

No one has pretended otherwise! the same was done with George R.R. Martin.

Join us on October 24 at 7 p.m. ET / 11:59 p.m. GMT for a conversation with George R. R. Martin as he discusses all things Targaryen. The program will feature a moderated discussion with George; a special video about the illustrations featured in The Rise of the Dragon; an audience Q&A; and videos from HBO’s House of the Dragon. Each ticket includes a copy of Fire & Blood or The Rise of the Dragon in addition to virtual event access.
