I think we can all agree that the rf have all received a lot of abuse and scrutiny. All of them. Phil the nazi etc. I do believe if Twitter and mn was around in the Diana days the volume would far exceed whatever Harold receives.

It isn't good or ok but making reality shows moaning and writing books invading other's privacy was never going to help.

MNHQ had to ban all threads about M&H for about three months because they literally did not have the moderator manpower to sort them out. Has that happened with Kate. No.

And this was before they left so that can't be blamed.

No, but as I said, I do think the nature of online discourse had changed a lot (for the worse) between 2010 and 2017.

And I also think that Harry’s relatively speedy engagement to an American actress was always going to create a hell of a lot more interest, both positive and negative than William getting engaged to his girlfriend of 8 years. Add the fact that Meghan was also divorced and mixed race as well, and it was a huge deal. I think it would likely only have been bigger if it had been William she was marrying!

As for MN changing, oh yes, it has changed unbelievably since when I first joined. I used to 'know' people on here... not literally, but it was so much smaller it was more of a community. Now NCing is so much more rife,(it really wasn't back in the day) it is more disjointed and real discussion on threads is harder because of posters swooping in with a new name to plant a bomb

I NC regularly ever since being approached on here by the DM who PMed me about a thread I was on. They wanted to do an article on it & approached a few of us. It made me wary.

Reinforced when a school mum approached me saying she know who I was on a school thread.

It made me feel a bit sick that she could have read my posts. I now have a different name for the school/uni threads & for when my dad was ill. It’s for my protection otherwise I’d never post any more.

Ok that was a long rant!

Nc makes no difference at all. We debate the points not the poster. Keeping a name can provoke a pile on, I only have to venture onto the rabid politics threads to get a load sniping at my ankles .

Nc is sometimes necessary to prevent that kind of trolling.

It would be awful to be recognised by someone in real life

Unfortunately some posters NC to cause trouble.
I cannot tell you how many posts I get having a pop at me, with a first post new name, never to post again except to argue the toss with me with a load of shite... to then disappear never to post again under that name.

I've had problems in RL from a pervious site with no name changes.

I've name changed here fairly recently because some ani Meghan posters started following me around the boards.

Name changing has always been there wonder if it is really more common if it's in response to some posters inability to understand others having differing opinions on topics.

It does seem to now be a thing to blame NC when poster's don't agree on something as if disagreeing must be some nefarious plot by the "other side".

I have to answer this.

The sort of posts I'm talking about with NCers is waking up in the morning to see a post overnight directed at me that is a personal attack... it's not about a poster not liking Meghan and disagreeing with me on that basis. That's fine, we differ, we can disagree, and we should be able to discuss.
It's literally making up stuff about me... one of them said... the majority of my posts are deleted because I'm a vile person, that type of thing.

Some posters unfortunately just see the name of who is posting and attack on that basis.

Maybe I should NC, that would be different for me! I did once and it ended up in an unholy mess and I couldn't get back in with my name and had to get MN to help!

You are I have a loose agreement. We may not agree (understatement lol) but we don't personally attack each other even if we are poles apart on certain subjects. And yes, we agree at times, it's refreshing
