If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

I thought well of Charles initially in the aftermath of the Queen's death but sadly as time goes on he seems to have gone back to the selfish insular twat that he was for most of his life. To invite H and M would be his biggest disservice to William and Kate. He would not be taking their feelings into account for this at all. It says to me that it is all about HIM - Charles - as opposed to the title and the country. I feel this shows how weak he is and not like his mother in any way.

You have expressed how I feel, I did feel goodwill towards Charles initially but my support started to waver when he didn’t make Edward the Duke if Edinburgh as per his mother’s wishes, if he invites H&M it will be purely for his own selfish reasons, not as monarch, and to be honest if they then go back to Montecito moaning to anyone who will listen about how badly they were treated then Charles deserves all he gets, he has brought it on himself for being weak and selfish, it’s a shame that William, Kate and the children will yet again get embroiled in the madness of King Charles.

@Darthwazette I'm so pleased you posted your comment about booing.

I don't believe people will boo either.

They may think their private thoughts (as they are entitled to do), but if they are invited (which they should be) and accept (which they ought to) I think the public's reaction will be dignified.

You really can't seem to grasp the point can you? The hypocrisy isn't about what you choose to share, it is saying they want to protect their children, they 'fled' the UK to protect their privacy, their privacy is their priority with their children.

Hypocrisy is saying one thing, and doing another. You know, like saving the planet and flying everywhere by private jet...to protect their privacy apparently.

@purpledalmation
Honestly, you're just rambling now.

Umm like Charles? He's been doing that for decades, the biggest environmental hypocrite there is. Same as William, criticising overpopulation (of black and brown people, of course) when he has 3 kids of his own.

There are good reasons re Edward
Charles is grieving for his mother, it’s not insular - it’s normal.
People are very hard on him, but he is a gentle and kind person and I’m sure he wishes his son was well, and stable and able to be amicable. They are real people and it must be hard to manage family issues in the public eye.

Maybe there are good reasons for sidelining Edward, though I’m pretty sure they are not insurmountable, I don’t think it has put Charles in a good light at all going against his mother’s wishes and it is a big slap in the face for Sophie and Edward considering they do a lot of the grunt work. I don’t think people are being hard on Charles, it goes with the territory, people will question his actions as Monarch.

SammyScrounge · 07/02/2023 18:39

Harry and Meghan or just Harry will make the coronation all about them instead of Charles and Camilla. I really think they have a bottomless reservoir of spite and will not hesitate to use it, either at the coronation or after it.
No one is going to speak to them anyway, for fear of being recorded or misquoted by that hellish pair. Let them watch the coronation on TV in Montecito and let King Charles have his day. I was touched by his request to his boys not to spoil his last years. William can be trusted to stand by his Dad but Harry and Meghan - never.

Gilmorehill · 07/02/2023 18:46

Does anyone think H and M have any idea of the negative impact of H’s book and even the Netflix series? They have become very negative and spiteful in some eyes or in H’s case, figures of fun, due to the over sharing. Do you think they have been shielded from the public reaction because it would be pretty bloody devastating if they knew how negative it is.

Admittedly I’ve not had hundreds of conversations about them, but those I’ve had have been with people who felt like you - until the book. Now they may see them as flawed but have sympathy and understanding for them in a way they didn’t previously. They don’t feel negatively towards them. I only see those thoughts on here and some newspaper sites.

I believe the new golden coach is being made in Australia and it is a gift

Considering Jim Frecklington (who's apparently building the thing) already produced the previous Australian State Coach and the Diamond Jubilee one that actually pretty generous of him - though presumably it's being funded somehow rather than coming out of his own pocket?

I don't know if it's coming out of his pocket or from where but I had seen that report in the Yorkshire Post, which is on a post 2 or 3 pages ago, and it's said to be a gift. He's not a young man who's just started out in business. He might have a few pennies in the bank. Do you think it's possible that more than one person has quietly thrown in a bit of money towards it? I think that could be possible. I think the man, who has carved the crown to go on top, is from Yorkshire.

I see a LOT of support for them on Twitter.

The worst comments I ever see online are on here. MN is a haven for rabid royalists, and quite possibly UK "journalists" too.

mateysmum · 07/02/2023 19:05

Whatever happens, neither side can win. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If H&M are not invited their fans will just sat it is further proof of how nasty and racist the royals are. If they're invited many will say it's awful and they deserve to be booed. If H&M attend they will either be booed or accused of stealing the limelight and if they come but are not treated with sufficient respect and smiles (according to their fans) then again the royals will be condemned.
I don't see a good option. However, Charles loves his sons and I'm sure as a parent will be desperate to have them both at the coronation so I'm sure H&M will be invited. If I was them though, I would have a "diplomatic" bout of covid.

I think the Twitter support is paid for

Sounds completely realistic to me, upinaballoon; after all these things don't come cheap and it's hard to imagine the builder's met all the costs himself

I don't see a good option

Easy ... if invited, H&M could put out a statement saying (justifiably) that the media can't be trusted to report responsibly, and that out of love for Charles they'll stay away so he can have his day without distractions

Probably unlikely to happen, but since it would be a truly unselfish act I'd love to see the media try to spin that one!!

Yeah but to be fair most of twitter is absolute shite anyway.

ExistenceOptional · 07/02/2023 22:58

I agree the worst comments are on MN. Some comments have been terrible.
Twitter is very critical of William, Charles and Camilla.

ExistenceOptional · 07/02/2023 22:59

I do not think it matters whether they come or not. Whatever they do the Royalists will talk incessantly about Meghan and Harry. They can't help themselves. They are fascinated by them.
Even when Meghan has not been in the public eye at all people start threads asking where she is and what she is up to.

Only the first coach was paid for by the Australian Govt.

the second one received a govt grant of $250,000 and the rest was privately funded. It sat, finished, in Australia for years because of transport costs. I think the Royal Trust or similar organisation ended up paying to transport it.

The third coach, which I’ve only heard about on here (must have been very little coverage of it in Australia, although I barely read Murdoch owned media so maybe it was covered there?), is all privately funded according to a quick search I just did.

Freklington builds these beautiful coaches. It keeps old crafts alive and appreciated. But it’s not something most of the general population Australian people would agree to paying for. Those days of the first coach - The Australian State coach - are gone. I’d be very shocked if any public money went into this coach as the general mood re gifting to the Royal Family and Britain is very different here now.

Yeah but to be fair most of twitter is absolute shite anyway.

I use Twitter to follow politics - mostly Australian, some world. I find that part of Twitter helpful. If I want to read tweets about the RF or anyone connected to it, I have to look for it. I have looked for it to see what it was like, but haven’t looked again. Twitter is mostly a choice. Although Musk’s new category ‘for you’ is invasive. I just move over to ‘following’

lightisnotwhite · 08/02/2023 00:05

Why would they come? They don’t live here and aren’t fans of monarchy. He can see his dad and the rest of the family anytime outside of work. This is a coronation
, official state business.
He named the bloody book Spare so it’s not as if he’s expecting to be needed in any royal capacity.

HeddaGarbled · 08/02/2023 00:20

The problem with Twitter is it becomes your own personal echo chamber. You follow a few people who do or don’t like the Sussexes and then that’s all you ever see. It is good for us to read from a range of sources, even those whose political/social stance is different from our own, because that way we can’t delude ourselves that our opinion is predominant.

Underminer · 08/02/2023 01:18

It’s all a load of old shit. Anointing? Wtf. Modernise it, short state affair to mark the history, a few trumpets, crown stuck on head, the end. No need to parade any family around, and do all ye ancient religious relic guff. It needs a shake up.

Just wondering. Where are the polls to be found. I’ve not seen a poll on Harry and Meghan. Sure they exist. But where?
