If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

July 13, 1996: Diana would retain her home and office, share custody of her sons with her ex-husband and receive the reported sum of at least $22 million, plus yearly office expenses of $600,000. And yes, Diana was still Princess of Wales—but she would no longer go by HRH. Diana planned on fighting for the HRH, but dropped it when then-14-year-old William assured her it didn't matter to him. She would still be "regarded as a member of the royal family," the palace stated.

The palace lied by the way. When she died the Queen initially said it would be a private family funeral as she was not a member of the Royal family.

It wasn't a lie. 🙄 That was the intention. But such was the outpouring and backlash, they changed their minds. Isn't that what they should do? Listen to the public. I thought that's one reason you didn't like them, because you couldn't have any say over anything they did? Here's an example with the public did have a.say.

You really don’t like him do you?

A supporter of a proven paedophile?
You're quite right, I don't

Bjarnum · 07/03/2023 21:33

I think they will be greeted with the odd "Privacy Tour" placard and a shower of dog bowls

It was a lie. A year before her death the Palace said she was still a member of the Royal Family.
She died and the Queen said she was not a member of the Royal family so would have a private family funeral. The public protested a lot and the Queen had to back down and treat her like a member of the Royal Family.

The palace lie all the time.

Princess Margaret had a private (Royal) family funeral. Held at St George’s chapel at Windsor, and with photographers present.

Diana had a ceremonial funeral - the same as the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother and Margaret Thatcher. They are fairly rare. Funnily enough, had the Royal family kept to their plans and had a private funeral, the question of her sons walking behind the coffin would never even had arisen, as that only happens with a ceremonial or state funeral. So the family bowed to public/press pressure, and then get pilloried for the impact of that decision on Diana’s sons.

ExistenceOptional · 07/03/2023 21:46

@Serenster Margaret had been in poor health for a long time when she died. I assume she had made clear what kind of funeral she wanted.

ExistenceOptional · 07/03/2023 21:47

And there was zero need to have the boys walking behind. It was to protect Charles i.e. to stop the public throwing things at him.

Serenster · 07/03/2023 21:59

Flowers, you mean? They did that anyway!

Do you have a link? I have never heard that story before.

No link. It was one of those Channel 5 programmes.

ExistenceOptional · 07/03/2023 22:08

@Roundlampshade so not true then

DuchessOfPort · 07/03/2023 22:10

The “same time next week?!” story was originally from Darren McGrady, Diana’s personal chef.

The queen made no public statement about the funeral so you don't know what she said.

Princess Margaret had a private funeral and she was very much family. Maybe the Queen felt that, as Diana was no longer going to be a monarch, that was what was fitting for her, too. Whatever had been said, the princess did in fact lie at both St James and Kensington Palaces in the days before her ceremonial funeral.

Here you go...

According to Diana’s personal chef Darren McGrady, the pair still had affection for each other and he recalled one particular incident that demonstrated that. One time, when Charles flew up to Kensington Palace from Highgrove, he got caught short and asked the princess to let him in so he could use the bathroom. After he left, she shouted after him: “Same time next week, Charles!” and winked at him, to which he went red.

"One time he landed he had six motorcycle outriders and his back-up car, but got caught short and needed the bathroom.

"He rang the princess and she said, ‘Fine, come in.’

“The police got off their bikes and waited and the princess let him in.

"When he came out and was about to get in the car, she shouted, ‘Same time next week Charles!’ and winked at him.
^^
“The police put on their helmets quickly and Charles went bright red.

You could see they still had affection for each other.”

I've heard this story before but I must be missing something regarding the logistics! Why would Charles fly to KP if he wasn't living there? Wasn't there a toilet on the helicopter? Why would Charles need to rush into Diana's apartments?

DuchessOfPort · 07/03/2023 22:44

Buckingham Palace didn’t get a proper helipad til 1998 - even QE2 used the KP one as she didn’t like helicopters messing up the grass at Buckingham Palace.

dont know if the helicopter has a loo though. Assume not!

There aren't toilets on helicopters! Are there?! He used to land behind KP and drive to Clarence House.

Sorry I missed this bit.

Charles would fly up from Highgrove and land on the field behind Kensington Palace.

That makes more sense.

BillLius · 07/03/2023 22:49

There are no toilets on helicopters. There isn’t enough room. Some military chinooks have piss tubes for the pilots but I can’t see Charles getting his wanger out in public mid-flight.

That makes more sense. You're right there probably aren't any loos on helicopters. I've never been on one so my knowledge is somewhat vague!

Have you never heard of the pissbergs that fall off airplanes as they come into land at Heathrow? www.cornwalllive.com/news/local-news/frozen-pee-falling-planes-smashing-2691551.amp

BillLius · 07/03/2023 23:09

This is the real reason Harry and Meghan left the U.K. They didn’t want a pile of piss landing in their garden and spoiling the view.

Well, now you mention it.... But not in this day and age, surely? Why isn't it compacted and removed. Oh I bet they're Ryanair bergs, trying to save money on waste disposal!
