If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

Booing is very un-British. Far too direct. I think a collective eye-roll, coordinated tutting, and synchronised bosom hoiking as the Sussexes pass by would be far more in keeping.

Plitvice · 07/02/2023 09:21

Nah, they would feel 'othered' and be mortally offended by such a request. It would result in a series of interviews and documentaries and perhaps even another book.

Samcro · 07/02/2023 09:49

i can't understand why anyone would boo them. weird. I can get booing a politician, they actually affect our lives.
but H&M don't get it.
hope they do come, both of them and their children.

purpledalmation · 07/02/2023 10:02

But then I don’t recall any embarrassing booing from ‘last time’ so meh

They were booed at the Jubilee celebration going into the church, along with boris Johnson and his wife.

The problem with Harry coming on his own is (a) he needs Meghan by his side and (b) after Spare he is as disliked as Meghan by an awful lot of people. Attacking camilla and William directly and his whole family indirectly hasn't endeared him to anyone.

It's a lose lose situation for everyone. Charles loves his son unconditionally like every parent. He's effectively lost him after the revelations in the book. William has lost his brother but being younger, can live with it. Harry has lost contact with his family and friends.

Harry was never happy in the RF so Meghan has done him a favour by giving him an option to live in America. In theory they should be happy there and do whatever it is they want. Creating a pity party of gigantic proportions has hurt them and the RF. I just hope they decline as it is their child's birthday.

I think Charles should abdicate as he doesn't have the strength or stomach for the job.

Perhaps he'll abdicate at the Coronation? That'll be novel ! I doubt it, given he's having a new golden carriage and two new thrones made especially for the occasion.

I believe the new golden coach is being made in Australia and it is a gift, and won't cost Norman Baker or me anything. Do you know whether the man in Australia suggested it first, or whether Charles asked him to make it?

If H and M come, and if there is booing, I would expect it to be minimal.

I think the papers and the TVs will concentrate on the coronation itself, so I don't think H and M could steal limelight from the occasion. They might get more threads about them on MN, but that's not the same thing.

"and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come"
I don't think the monarch can, let alone should, strike such a deal.
Anyone who attends a high-profile public event is likely to be photographed, and the press are free to comment on that as they see fit.
Personally, I think they will be invited and it's up to them whether they come.
I believe that most of the recent commentary is just pot-boiling speculation.
I agree that it'll be like the funeral - present, seated in suitable position by rank, at the formal events.
Not necessarily at the ancilliary events/receptions

New one?

There's been lots of commentary on the use of the same Golden Coach as ER II used for the coronation

And separately, that there is to be a new state coach. But I haven't seen anything that says the new one is for the coronation. Has there been a statement somewhere that I've missed?

It's normal to have new coronation chairs made. Bit of a stretch to describe them as thrones though

Blessedwithsunshine · 07/02/2023 10:58

The public feel sufficiently furious and disgusted with Harry, I agree op, it does matter, a lot, whether he is invited because WE ARE PAYING !!!

Yes the tax payer will fund the entire thing, so given Harry has screwed up his credibility and reputation globally, I think absolutely people have the right to say they can’t and won’t support or pay for him being here.

The booing would be the least of it, he is now a massive security risk as well. Given his Taliban comments.

No, he must not come and he should let his family enjoy a special occasion in peace without it being marred by the Sussex circus.

Blip · 07/02/2023 11:08

I'd be pretty pissed off as a tax payer to have to pay for security for H&M visiting given Harry's recent taliban baiting.
His presence ups the security risk for the public as well as the other members of the RF.

Yes a new one. Plenty on google about it.

And yes, they are thrones, and described as such. Not seen them called chairs to be honest.

Blip · 07/02/2023 11:14

I'm no monarchist but frankly if we're going to have a monarchy having new thrones and carriages is fine by me.

Extra security risks to the public due to Harry's whipping up of the Taliban, now that I do have issues with.

Blessedwithsunshine · 07/02/2023 11:20

The coronation was always a security risk but thanks to Harry it is now going to much, much larger and if he comes, then I would be very worried for the public and emergency services. Not to mention the fact the whole royal family will be in attendance and is now at heightened risk now.

If I was part of the RF security detail I would not be entertaining the idea of Harry’s attendance due to the risk alone.

purpledalmation · 07/02/2023 11:39

Hopefully the taliban risk and security will be enough for them not to attend.

I want them to stay away as well, mostly for their own mental health, I don't think they would be protected by the RF if they came. The media are diabolical and would slaughter them gleefully - look at the ridiculous articles asking where Meghan is. They can't wait to tear her apart.

I wonder about the long-term effects of being constantly visciously criticised, especially on Meghan. I hope for their own sakes they stay away and have a lovely birthday party for Archie, who deserves it.

King Charles can bog off a cliff in his stupid golden carriage.

Auldandknackered · 07/02/2023 12:34

I suspect if they Fronted up with their kids most folks would behave.

Really?? I don’t think it will change anything, the Sussexes have already shown they don’t care what their dc are subjected to.

Viviennemary · 07/02/2023 12:43

I dont think they should come. And people should boo them if they want to. Most people would be relieved if they stay away.,

Like what? They have done everything in their power to protect their kids. Like good parents do. Their kids have been subjected to horrific racist comments, the parents took them away to a better country to keep them safe from such poison.

And are happy for them to grow up with the world knowing the very intimate details of their parents' lives. There's going to be some challenging moments for them in the playgrounds of the future.

derxa · 07/02/2023 12:51

I want them to stay away as well, mostly for their own mental health Blimey!!!
Their mental health? They don't give a shiny shit about anyone else's mental health. They are two of the most self absorbed people in the public eye at the moment.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 07/02/2023 13:03

I hope they come. I like them and think they’ve been treated appallingly by their family and the press. Damaged, yes. Evil and worthy of the blasting they get? No, not in my view.
