The "Where's Meghan" Question Has Been Definitively Answered ...

She's been busy!

I hope that those who expressed concern will be happy to know that she has been working with the Archewell team on their just released Impact Report.

Meghan and Harry are polarising figures but there is no doubt that they have galvanising power to get projects, both little and big, off the ground.

Harry, with William and Kate, was a co-founder of the Royal Foundation in 2011. They had a start-up fund of just under 5 million pounds, of which 1.3 million pounds was given away in grants.

10 yrs later, Harry and Meghan set up Archewell, with start up funds of 13 million dollars, and give away three million dollars in grants.

As with both foundations, the reserve is carried over.

The range of their projects is interesting, from working with the Vaccine Alliance to raise private sector contributions to distribute vaccines, endowing academic fellowships, working with partners in resettling refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan, working with World Central Kitchens, to smaller projects like the Uvalde community playground and park and a really cute project to a small charity that gives free hair braiding to young black girls in Texas.

I am so pleased for them, their advisors and staff as this is a dream start for any start up. I have long been sceptical that they may have spread themselves too thinly, so I am glad to see they are now focusing on just three areas, as they find their groove.

I think the treatment of Harry and Meghan says a lot more about the state of this country than their behaviour.

There was a lot of discussion a couple of days ago about the embargoed story on the front pages of the Guardian and Telegraph, including here. The story was about Britain being the only top nation to see a decline in GDP.

Astonishingly, across the forums, the speculation was that the embargoed story was about Harry and Meghan.

Part of my fascination with this debate is how it has become a wedge issue, and one that distracts from larger problems. You are absolutely spot on to say their treatment says a lot about the state of the country. I expect the vitriol to ratchet up ahead of the coronation. If they come, they will be lambasted. If they don't come they will be lambasted.

Donating $3 million is pathetic. Looking at the glossy PR exercise that is the archwell statement, one must ask what has happened to the othe 10 million?

All the donations on their website are down to partnerships. So they've donated practically nothing. Guess what the only archwell project fully funded by them is? A children's playground in Texas! Wow!!

Yet again Harry and Meghan have excelled in vagueness, misdirection and zero concrete figures in their statement.

They have a list around 30 'partners' who pay the majority of the actual donations.

Catherine and williams royal foundation produce rock solid accounts. For 2021 over 92% of the £16 million raised went directly to their charities. No huge list of partnerships either.

purpledalmation · 01/02/2023 12:52

Basically Meghan and Harry hitch their Archwell foundation to multiple charitable foundations in an effort to look good. All smoke and mirrors because they give no financial breakdowns. Joke

Ohnonevermind · 01/02/2023 13:44

@purpledalmation
Volunteers built the playground via kaboom. They are the hero’s in the Ulvade project

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/02/2023 13:54

I thought that too was a partnership - in this case with the City of Uvalde, Kaboom! and (as Ohnonevermind just said) the involvement of volunteers?

I agree about the vagueness and misdirection, though they're not alone in that, but as ever I'll wait to see the numbers before drawing any firm conclusions

Ohnonevermind · 01/02/2023 18:06

I’ve no problem with archewell holding back funds while they get established. You want to have a longer term plan than just your first year and some worthy projects need multi year funding.

I remember some people complaining about Earthshot in its first year as it had start up costs. These posters are strangely quiet now in their criticism of Archwell which has done the same (even more so too) 🤔

Archwell should release the financial statements as the impact statement is so limited without it. And they should have cut the waffle in the statement it does them no favours.

I would agree with that. What I want to see is the financial statements showing the rest of the money is still there.

Why am I not surprised?

CathyorClaire · 01/02/2023 21:05

Sophie owned her own PR company when she married Edward. I think that’s a considerable achievement.

But look how it ended...

CathyorClaire · 01/02/2023 21:11

Archwell should release the financial statements

Yes.

Starting with opacity around the final destination of donated charitable funds originating in the Royal Foundation and transferred to the now seemingly muted Travalyst.

The rabid, vapid and blinkered will be up in arms about mere mortals who they seem to be hell bent on destroying, whilst the country burns around them. Its utter madness.

MountedbyHarryWindsor · 01/02/2023 21:30

MM is probably pregnant and will do a coat reveal at the coronation.

ItsCurtainstothat · 01/02/2023 21:43

Perfect
excuse for not attending the Coronation.

Haha yes I was thinking that too

@debbrianna

I am fascinated by the psychology of "anti-fans", people who obsessively dislike a public figure but spend time obsessing over them with others. One term for it is "shared hate."

www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2021/06/10518195/megxit-meghan-markle-anti-fandom

Am also fascinated by the idea of Meghan as a "disruptors", here's an academic paper on the subject if you are interested.

www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14680777.2021.1928258?journalCode=rfms20

Thanks for this- I will read it this week. I too am intrigued as for so long I have not been able to understand the obsession with someone you hate so much. I used to make this comment a lot but have given up. I've never come across it to the degree it is on MN - possibly because it is anonymous. I hope I find some answers here to understand the psyche behind it.

Hair braiding charity? My, oh my, we really need that, don't we?

For all those jumping on your bandwagon and taking the p*ss out of the hair braiding charity - it is obvious that it wouldn't be something that catches your interest otherwise you wouldn't make a comment like that.

I am interested in this as I remember when Britney was on Ellen and gave an intro as to how and why she started before receiving a donation from Meghan. I thought it was wonderful - braiding is common for black peoples and a necessary part of hair grooming but it is skill that takes time so is expensive.

I think this idea is brilliant for children - I also see that she has expanded to offering a meal and hair wash as well.

For anyone interested here is the link to the Ellen show with Britney

circuit-magazine.com/stalkers-and-super-fans-when-does-being-a-fan-go-too-far/

I’m intrigued by the obsessive Meghan and Harry stans. I started off ambivalent, made a couple of casual remarks about royals in generals on these threads, and have since been stalked across mumsnet, harassed and picked on. Just baffling why adults would feel so invested. To the point they start aggressively attacking anyone that doesn’t worship their idol. Even fair criticism is viewed as an attack. It’s also bizarre how some posters sometimes even try to hint they’re somehow secretly connected to these celebrities, from pretending to hold secret insider knowledge, to pretending they’re only on mumsnet because they’re researching a book on the subject of Meghan and the general public’s refusal to worship her. A link to an article about when super fanning starts crossing a line.

AllOutofEverything · 01/02/2023 22:40

@Neowulf Some of the Royalists are very obsessive and personally attack anyone who has even the mildest criticism of the Royals. I have been stalked across other threads by a few.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 01/02/2023 22:44

But I can Understand a super fan obsessing about them - that's what super fans do either it's a celebrity or royal.. But a hater obsessing about someone you hate. It means that you are in a negative mindset obsessing. That's the difference. Isn't that DERANGED- as Justine would say.

Neowulf · 01/02/2023 22:45

@AllOutofEverything Sorry that happened to you, but also kinda glad it wasn’t just me! It’s not nice is it, to be made to feel spied on. They also made unpleasant personal remarks about me - says everything about what type of person that really are. Got the impression they were trying to bully and silence me - it had the opposite effect.

Neowulf · 01/02/2023 22:51

www.researchgate.net/publication/325380366_What's_fame_got_to_do_with_it_Clarifying_links_among_celebrity_attitudes_fame_appeal_and_narcissistic_subtypes

i wouldn’t brag about being a super fan, certain personality types worship fame and feel an intimacy with someone they don’t actually know. It’s not exactly a healthy thing to do.

I don’t hate Harry and Meghan, i dislike words being put into my mouth. In fact, I enjoyed his book (bloody hilarious). And all the recent scandal - it’s a soap opera. They tend to elicit the same reaction as trump did. Just like trump they have super fans, and lots of other people who are critical.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 01/02/2023 22:57

I am not bragging as I don't consider myself a super fan but as well I won't snivel if that's used to try and insult me. I am comparing the two and My point is if I am to be one which I guess is what you are insinuating or anyone else who makes positive comments or threads about M&H - I would rather be a superfan - than obsessed with hate and negativity on an anonymous forum.

Ohnonevermind · 01/02/2023 22:57

@Neowulf

I was just about to start a post about the same thing about how similar the same thing is to Trump and his crazy fans 😀 when I saw your post

Neowulf · 01/02/2023 23:13

Haha! I remember when he was everywhere, he was the gift that kept on giving! And so polarising too. And the people that thought he was great, were fanatical! They stormed the capitol for him even though he clearly didn’t give two hoots. He was quite good at convincing some people that he was very much on their side and representing their interests. However the public and media bored of him eventually, he’s struggling to drum up the same level of interest now. Same thing will happen with this, they’ll be the new celebrity gossip/scandal along soon enough. Although it would be great to get a spare part two! We had immense fun with it at our book club 😂
