Do we really need it? My first thought is no we don't, the money would be better spent on the NHS!

Apart from not wanting the hoo haa of presidential elections with the attendant risk of ending up with a President Boris or the like (take a look at the Americans, last time they had a choice between Trump, demented, or Biden, dementia) I'd get rid of the monarchy, frozen penises, friends of paedophiles, adulterers, receivers of iffy cash in carrier bags and all.
A quick google tells me that the UK is the last country in Europe to have coronations, they just have simple ceremonies. Why we have to blow millions on yet another wing ding royal do - when the country is financially up shit creek without a paddle - is beyond me.

PeekAtYou · 22/01/2023 09:19

All this for a king who expressed a desire to be a tampon?
I think this is hardly outrageous compared to the average sexting/phone sex that happens between couples. Good job your dirty texts with your partners haven't been made public eh?
With Tampongate you have spectacularly missed the point about phone hacking which still isn't legally "sorted"

vera99 · 22/01/2023 09:19

I'm close to capitualtion tbh - we live near London and the centre is just 35 minutes away. My sister and brother in law have booked to come to stay that weekend so I will have to be on my best behaviuor not sniping away. If the weather's good it will be yet another London 3 day party.

RichardsGear · 22/01/2023 09:20

Why are people banging on about the NHS when all public services are on their knees and in dire need of investment?

Goatling · 22/01/2023 09:22

RichardsGear because the NHS is one of the things this coronation is going to applaud. Hah

vera99 · 22/01/2023 09:26

Plus refugees that won't go down well with a certain constituency. It smells a bit woke but there's nothing wrong with that.

Ylvamoon · 22/01/2023 09:30

To me a big coronation is an expense for some and a money making machine for others!
There will be a new book: Not On The Balcony

BMW6 · 22/01/2023 09:33

I can just picture the OP with a face like a bulldog licking piss from a thistle on Coronation day 😂

Roussette · 22/01/2023 09:34

I cannot believe that Charles who has been banging on about slimming down and cutting back, has now done a complete reversal and the Coronation is going to last 3 days and cost £100million.

All other European Royal Houses have a very simple ceremony if they have anything at all. Most don't.

And here we are spending £100million in very difficult times. Pathetic.

I also object to being urged to spend a day volunteering to mark this Coronation. I volunteered full on for 15 years and there's very many wonderful people out there doing voluntary work incessantly.

I find his urging patronising.

All this for a king who expressed a desire to be a tampon? I think he's out of touch with reality. For me any loyalty to the RF died alongside our late Queen.

The way people go on about this, you'd think he'd said it at a state banquet. His phone call was intercepted by a twat recording other peoples' calls and selling them off to the tabloids. The actual conversation was pretty tame as far as sex chat goes. If anything, it shows he's human like the rest of us. There are plenty of reasons to abolish the monarchy, but this isn't one of them. Bloody get over it.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 22/01/2023 08:50

Self indulgent nonsense. They are both old enough to know that a nice quiet ceremony might be more in keeping with the public mood.

You cannot do a "nice, quiet" coronation for the King of the UK and Commonwealth realms. It's not a birthday party. It's of more public and global interest than his wedding to Camilla. There needs to be something worth seeing.

We don't get coronations very often, so for all the legitimate concerns about the costs of the RF, I'm not particularly bothered about this.

PortiasBiscuit · 22/01/2023 09:38

Yay, another street party and a chance to dig out the bunting.
Sort of wish it wasn’t in the middle of the exams though.

AuntieMarys · 22/01/2023 09:39

European monarchs don't have coronations

This with bells on.

We're a nation with a huge amount of people living in poverty, with a crumbling nhs and the 'King' is happy to inflict this tasteless, outdated and wildly wasteful shit show on us all.

I'd have a tiny bit of respect for him if he chose to go low key and went for a quiet, cheap & mostly private coronation.
He could do it as a way of showing that this was a new era for the monarchy, rather than parading the usual outdated pomp that really just looks laughable these days.

It's projected to cost 100 million. It feels like Charles is throwing himself a party while the villagers starve.

Which is all money that will go straight into the British economy and create and sustain jobs, as will spending on things like flags, memorabilia, street parties etc. And money will be made out of broadcast sales to other countries. It's pretty cost neutral in reality.

The son and daughter in law who already had millions of their own and chose not to do any work as members of the RF? It's not like they were going to starve, was it?

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 22/01/2023 09:44

All other European Royal Houses have a very simple ceremony if they have anything at all. Most don't.

Which don’t? The only recent one that has been very, very low key that I can think of is Spain and that’s in large part because of the reasons for the abdication.

Even those with smaller ceremonies such as Belgium and the Netherlands still have large celebration events.

Monaco’s enthronement is a simple ceremony, but it was a multi day event with foreign royals involved in multiple days.

Denmark, Sweden, Luxembourg and Norway haven’t had a change for many years so we’ve no idea what the next coronation/enthronement/inauguration will be like.

Is he trolling right wingers with his diversity,NHS,LGBTQA+,refugee themes - I can see the comments section of the Torygraph losing their breakfasts in Tunbridge Wells.

Hbh17 · 22/01/2023 09:45

It will be fabulous, and very popular. I'm really looking forward to it.

Mamamia7962 · 22/01/2023 09:46

I'm looking forward to it, but then I love a bit of pomp and ceremony. It will also be good for businesses, imagine how many people will be travelling to London, spending money in cafes, on memorabilia etc.

I’m more concerned about the psychological horrors of another concert and that they don’t let Sir Rod Stewart loose on his own again to sing a terrifying Sweet Caroline.

They need a ‘super group’ of Sir Rod, Sir Tom and Alfie Boe, so Rod can have a nice vocal rest.

And Diana Ross
That was preety awful too

MonsoonMadness · 22/01/2023 09:46

DomesticShortHair · 22/01/2023 09:07

If you think the money would be better spent off on the NHS, then I think you’re very naive as to how effective the NHS is at spending money where it actually makes a difference. You could give it ten times as much, and as far as patient outcomes are concerned, it wouldn’t change a thing.

Sadly probably true.
