Do we really need it? My first thought is no we don't, the money would be better spent on the NHS!

Because you said he didn't have enough money to look after her. But he clearly did look after her.

But she saw the whole of the moon

When both parties had affairs because the marriage was miserable for them both, when the kids are now middle aged and married with kids of their own and when the errant couple have now been married for longer than the first marriage lasted...it's time to move on past stuff that happened while Margaret Thatcher was PM and Agadoo was in the charts.

You move on if you want to , this ladies not for moving !

Ridemeginger · 22/01/2023 10:37

@vera99 , so you do believe the tabloids then - when it suits you.

Turning.

If you want to stay bitter at him because of that for another 30 years even when his entire family has moved on then of course you can. I can't see what it'll achieve though.

Ridemeginger · 22/01/2023 10:38

Diana had multiple affairs. Are you saying you wouldn't want her crowned queen, had she and their marriage survived?

It felt pretty grubby tbh the Excess as well - the home of Diana and Madeleine McCann stories... and Brexit. But needs must and all that 😀

What precedents? Charles can have the Coronation he wants. The last one was 70 years ago, there are no precedents

You are aware that the fact that there was one 70 years ago means that there is a precedent? Or maybe you don't understand what that word means.

All other European Royal Houses have a very simple ceremony if they have anything at all. Most don't.

Which don’t? The only recent one that has been very, very low key that I can think of is Spain and that’s in large part because of the reasons for the abdication.

Even those with smaller ceremonies such as Belgium and the Netherlands still have large celebration events.

Monaco’s enthronement is a simple ceremony, but it was a multi day event with foreign royals involved in multiple days.

Denmark, Sweden, Luxembourg and Norway haven’t had a change for many years so we’ve no idea what the next coronation/enthronement/inauguration will be like.

The Dutch have a bank holiday every year for Monarch's birthday. And have had two coronations since our last one because they can abdicate.

I think it probably balances out.

PoinsettiaPosturing · 22/01/2023 10:45

The tourism, hospitality and other revenue generated will far outweigh the costs. The RF give up 100% of their income and then receive a stipend from the government, it's not 'we pay for them' in the sense that most people think. Facts on this here: amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/14/the-sovereigns-wealth-uk-royal-familys-finances-explained

You don't think Britain has protocol and precedent for coronations?

I can't deal with this level of debate right now. Just believe me, we've done this before and there are certain rules and expectations.

I doubt that an article about the cheeky/rude nicknames W&K use for each other is proving the fatuous point you wish it to prove.

No we don't need a three day circus bigging up the status of an already over wealthy, largely under performing and entitled family.

So much for all the performant "slimming down the monarchy" - that was never going to persist through to Charles' own spending. He has long be famous for his demands for grandiosity even in small things where the late Queen was always quite modest/practical.

Charles has form for this - remember all the "Camilla will never take the title of Queen" followed by a lengthy PR campaign of soft focus articles and now the Kings former mistress will be crowned Queen. Kate had better look out!

I read a story once where a chef in one of his houses amended something at breakfast.

I want to say plums. So Charles apparently likes two preserved plums in a bowl at breakfast but only ever eats one. To minimise the waste the chef decided to give him one plum in his bowl one morning and the waiter came back with the bowl after breakfast, single plum still intact with a message from Charles confirming two required at breakfast.

Seems small but says it all really.

I think it's all in bad taste, so many people struggling to feed their children or heat their homes, so many striking for a decent living wage and the NHS in crisis. The royals don't have a clue how most of us live and think, as long as they have a life of luxury they don't give a stuff about the rest of us. They can shove their street parties, their woke agenda, the golden coaches and banquets, I wont be sorry to see the back of them.

I agree entirely.
Re 'tampongate' - yes he is human, but we already have enough politicians breaking marriage vows, taking bungs, hobnobbing with criminals (all of which Charles has also done). We don't need to pay for another flawed human to be 'the Defender of Faiths' ('divine right' ? - what tosh!). It makes us foolish on the world stage (any UK-enhancing 'dignity' died with the Queen imo). It also doesn't encourage anyone to behave well when their supposed elders & betters don't. So, let him do what he wants entirely in private, let him have a quiet low key ceremony to be 'King' if we must but I don't want to spend £100m & 3 days 'celebrating' a person like that.

I perfectly understand what the word means, thanks for the sarcasm. Hmm

Last year he vowed to have a 'low key Coronation'. He doesn't have to ride around in a gold carriage or have all the Heads of State attend. That is not a 'precedent' in our Constitution.

Not happening. It is full on 3 days £100million.

Continuity of things from before we were around and after we are gone is exactly the point of tradition. A link between the times.

That said, this coronation won't be as grand as the last one. Times are very different. But the idea that Charles has full control over it and can just arrange all the details as he wants as if it's a birthday party is daft.

You cannot do a "nice, quiet" coronation for the King of the UK and Commonwealth realms. It's not a birthday party. It's of more public and global interest than his wedding to Camilla. There needs to be something worth seeing.

We don't get coronations very often, so for all the legitimate concerns about the costs of the RF, I'm not particularly bothered about this.

You certainly can. Look at how other European royal families handle coronations, even when their countries aren’t on their knees. This is a cynical, meretricious ‘bread and circuses’ display.

It would be considered a great snub to the other countries not to invite their heads of state. For the third time, it's not a birthday party.

I don't think you understand this enough to comment on it. By all means be anti-royalist and think it's all a waste of time and money, but if it is going to go ahead (and it is), then it's an official state event, with protocol and precedent, and no we can't just tell all the dignitaries to fuck off because Chuck fancied a quiet one this year.

They are really not happy over at the comments section of the Express (Mail moderated on this one !),

It seems to be that this coronation is going to be one long luvviefest including all the people we don't want on these shores. Suddenly republicanism is starting to look slightly attractive.

Has anyone seen the Mail headlines on this ?
Coronation will be centred on 'refugees, diversity & volunteering' !
Charles wants to be the people king.

I know it made me feel sick. So woke this lot. Not for real brits anymore. They need to be disbanded

King of the Wokes.

King's daughter, Lisa Marie will be buried in Graceland later today.

Absolutely, maybe this is why refugees have been stuffed in hotels = ready for the coronation. Grrrr.

Perhaps Charles 3 - can PAY FOR HIS Coronation - from the 200 MILLION POUNDS Death Duties - HE NEVER had to Pay ??

With four out of five adults in serious debt in the UK, struggling to pay their energy bills, council taxes up 5% plus…yes, let’s have a publicly funded party to unite us all?! 🥂

"The service will "reflect the monarch's role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry"........................Somehow I think (given the headline over the road at the D M) he is not going to sit well with a very sizeable proportion of the population!!!

Put my name down to volunteer on the Monday to heckle Harry at Heathrow as he leaves for the last time

European Royal houses don't have coronations. Funny that.

And by the way, I'll comment where I want, thanks.
