Are we all going to sidestep the fact that 'gold digger' Meghan was paying for everything.
'we don't have money for her'

She was paying for heaters, lights and sofas. You name it.
All the while we are being fed that she is a 'gold digger' who has come into a privileged family.

As we do other 'working royals'.

And his house was furnished. It was not so long since it was all done up for William and Katherine. The taxpayer doesn't have to cough up just because his girlfriend doesn't like the sofa.

She took him to a furniture village
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
He said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
Oh you're so funny

I said; yeah
I can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure?
You wanna live like common people
You wanna see whatever common people see
Wanna sleep with common people
You wanna sleep with common people
Like me

But they didn't understand
They just smiled and waved their Royal hand

Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
And you dance and drink and screw

Because there's nothing else to do
Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along even though they're really laughing at you
And the stupid things that you do

Because you think that poor is cool
Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist

Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath
You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control

And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why

Exactly!! They’ve created a whole make believe world parodying the pain others actually have no choice but to suffer. They seem perversely obsessed with playing the victim

clyspa · 13/01/2023 12:26

I'm confused about why any discussion exists around this.

To me this sofa business along with;

  • South Africa interview/no one asked me if I'm ok
  • Nelson Mandela /dancing in the streets
  • Beyoncé text
  • airline staff thanking MM for her service

Are just cringy things that while true you just don't repeat because there is an element of the cray-cray/insincere about it and also really doesn't make you look as good as you think it does.

I had to buy a sofa even if you think you shouldn't have had to still sucks balls when you consider the person is a millionaire and it's them gonna sit on it!!!!

queenofarles · 13/01/2023 12:26

Rich people are rich because they don't spend their money.

Do people really not get this??

no , rich people spend money , they just buy the best and it lasts for years and years,

my father is a firm believer in buying the best , best cars , best furniture , houses . My parents hardly replace things , they don’t need to.

Harry says his father would give him money for 'work clothes', the formal suits for events.
I wonder if he was not living on his army retirement money. He definitely seems to have been unable to access his money and it was 'controlled', I would think - since he was young when he received any inheritance, presumably someone else had to sign it off (quite a way to financially control him).

He was not high maintenance, that is clear.

Harry received an annual allowance from his dad. In the financial year 2018-2019 the then Prince Charles paid £5 million to the Cambridges and Sussexes to cover official duties and private expenses - so say the H&M got around £2million .... that's a lot of "work clothes". H&M also received some money from the Sovereign grant.

Charles continued to pay them a "substantial sum" to support their transition to independence after they left the RF

Harry also inherited millions from Diana and the Queen Mother

.... and he got housing, housekeeping, maintenance, gardening and security totally free of charge

@00100001

also living costs encompasses many things - food, clothing, stuff for the home (furniture etc), day to day costs - not just an empty house. This was provided for K & W but as per Harry's description refused for M by Charles stating he "couldn't afford it" even though it was his duty to provide it!

plus - sounds as though it was unfurnished if they needed to buy furniture.

He's said it was furnished, just that he was embarrassed about the furniture for some reason. As the whole place had been refurbished not long before, it sounds as if the problem was simply that the furnishings weren't to Meghan's taste.

Why was it Charles' duty to provide financially for his multi-millionaire son who was getting £400K a year from his mother's estate, to say nothing of what he was getting from the Queen Mother's estate?

Well I don't think Harry regularly went to Tesco's for himself.

But I'm also expected to believe that Harry was living in abject poverty so therefore couldn't order delivery from Tesco either.

And his poor family let him starve to death in a hovel.

I take it Harry cooked for himself every night too rather than ordering takeouts constantly whilst managing to retain his waistline.

The amount of bullshit you actually have to swallow to believe this shit is extraordinary.

leithreas · 13/01/2023 12:38

I mean who cares how 2 millionaires paid for their own furniture? I don't think the argument was that Meghan was a gold digger, it was that she was looking for the status that marrying a member of the royal family would bring, not so much she was after Harrys money. Given the fact that since she married Harry she has pretty much exclusively traded off that status her whacking her credit card out to buy a bit of flat-packed furniture doesn't disprove anything.

Patineur · 13/01/2023 12:39

OP, if Harry really didn't have access to his own money and was getting nothing from his father, don't you think he would be shouting that fact from the rooftops? Even he doesn't claim that that is the case, no doubt because it is on record that he was being heavily bankrolled by his father in addition to getting a regular annual income of £400K from his mother's estate. Your argument isn't even supported by Harry himself.

Sounds like a DH problem not an in law problem. It isn't his money, it's theirs. She shouldn't have moved in with him without a clear agreement about money

Nanny0gg · 13/01/2023 12:42

LaBrujaPiruja · 13/01/2023 12:16

Meghan was not worth $5m. Impossible.

I could believe she had half a million or so when she married H but no more than that.

Apparently: 'landing her long-time role as Rachel Zane in Suits, which she took on for seven seasons and earned $50,000 per episode, per Parade.'

GenAndWine · 13/01/2023 12:42

Surely the real question is where did the money to pay the credit card bill came from?

His investment payouts? Her savings? Their SG payments? Did the bill go to the office to be dealt with?

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/01/2023 12:43

Is Harry now a bona fide mumsnet cock lodger? 🤔 No job, living off her money, house courtesy of other people..? And she roasted all the chickens, by all accounts.

He IS working though, he is very busy selling his family down the river for big bucks. Far from a MN CL who sits back and lets his wife work 3 jobs and produce children and a perfect household all to have the benefit of his company when he is not at the pub spending her gas money.

Nanny0gg · 13/01/2023 12:48

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/01/2023 11:20

Diana left him something like £6 million. A huge amount to us paupers but he won’t feel very wealthy in his circles with just that to live off for the rest of his days.

The boys got £10m each when they turned 25.

They got £14m between them from the Queen Mother, with Harry getting more than half.

So he probably had £20m to his name. Wisely invested that's not bad.

No idea if there's anything from the Queen and Prince Philip

Mellymoon · 13/01/2023 12:50

Why shouldn’t she have to? should we pay? I’m sure they wouldn’t have been sitting on a cardboard box or a cushion on the floor otherwise.

Was he miserly though , or his money was controlled?

If his money was being controlled at the time that MM moved in wouldn’t that have warranted a mention in the book?

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/01/2023 12:56

No I meant at Nott Cott! All that inheritance and yet Meg had to buy the sofa, really?! Why doesn’t anyone ask him why he didn’t pay? I get the impression he’s really tight.

DelphiniumBlue · 13/01/2023 12:57

Hmm are we saying that they are the sort of arrivistes who have to buy their own furniture rather than inheriting it?
I'd have thought there'd be plenty of antiques to pass on in that family!

Even if that is correct (I don’t believe it as I have worked in the industry), didn’t she had any expenses over the years? Didn’t she pay any tax?
Half a million being generous.

GrinAndVomit · 13/01/2023 12:59

Why was ikea furniture going on a credit card?
Surely she has enough money to buy ikea furniture outright without needing credit?
I think it’s another of Harry’s “truths”

BunnyFantastic · 13/01/2023 13:04

Why was ikea furniture going on a credit card?
I always put furniture purchases, as well
as flights, and other lump sum purchases, on a CC, as you have better protection if something goes wrong.

Bit of a non sequitur.

Are you a multi millionaire royal and/ or actress?
You think she’s concerned about the ability to return a £10 lamp?

I can’t see your point. I put everything I spend on my credit card and pay it off every month. Obviously I could afford to buy a cup of coffee “outright”, I just choose not to.
