Are we all going to sidestep the fact that 'gold digger' Meghan was paying for everything.
'we don't have money for her'

She was paying for heaters, lights and sofas. You name it.
All the while we are being fed that she is a 'gold digger' who has come into a privileged family.

OP do you genuinely think H&M had so little access to cash that all they could afford was an IKEA sofa on credit? Do you think that prior to buying that sofa Harry had been sitting on the floor?

HaroldandWilly · 13/01/2023 11:54

I find it hilarious that the OP has just implied Chelsy Davy, who has a net worth of about $40million, was a gold digger. Hahaha

I absolutely did not.
Though I do find it weird that this white blond woman was not in the slightest implied as such, while the woman of colour was seen as such.

@RedToothBrush Your parody is great. My brother is still using furniture bought over forty years ago. I have a living room set over twenty years ago, and it’s still decent. If I bought something new, the cats would just wreck it.
Buying used sofa furniture Involves bedbug risks. It’s not worth the risk.

Ericaequites · 13/01/2023 15:06

@Mrsjayy Many big American furniture stores have no interest financing for 24-48 months. After that, the interest rate is 25-30%. Getting this deal involves a lower credit score than conventional credit cards.

Just done a quick calculation based on a salary of £44k (current Army Captain pay) and 10 years service. At today's rates, 10 years service would give you a little over £6k pa and a tax free lump sum of a little under £19k. So not really much in the grand scheme of things!

Enough to buy a settee, though, eh?

Both are multi millionaires in their own rights. Maybe she used her credit card to get insurance on the sofa? Who gives a shit, they both clearly had enough dish to buy any sofa they wanted - their personal choice! I suspect it’s more their lack of knowledge on how ordinary life (like buying sofas) works. It all sounds a bit “common people” by Pulp to me, wanting to play at being poor!

I think the whole point is that the papers and people (like posters on here) have been going on about how privileged and rich they are.

Their NotCot is paramount to a mews house in central London. One of my neighbours uses this as a 'tack storage' room not even for the horses, but for the horse gear. Another it's a garage, another worker's quarters, and so forth. But we have been made to believe that H&M are hugely privileged. MM's own place in Toronto seems to have been better. Definitely not as rich as some central Londoners are.

People happed on about how MM was a 'gold digger' who came to live this luxurious life. That is not the case.

Also H was put up in 'workers quarters' at some stage. I feel more privileged than he was.

Crabo · 13/01/2023 15:17

So here is a guy at a time of national need and when food banks are busy in the country trying to convince people that two millionaires were so hard up they had to make do with a second hand sofa bought with a credit card. Isn’t this guy just trying to insult people who are needy? Does his greed know no end?

This whole poor is me spiel is pretty disgusting given the very real cost of living crisis worldwide, it is beyond tone deaf when we are talking about multi, multi millionaires!!

Megs was pissed off because she was given a 'tiny' cottage at KP and expected to be a princess and live in a castle, like Windsor for instance. She has publicly openly whinged about how small and horrid it was for them, and how beautiful and well furnished William's pad was!

It seems they are continuing the Cinderella narrative despite living in a huge mansion in LA and clearly making tens of millions moaning about their sofas!

You really couldn't make it up.

There is no where she is 'pissed' about anything. No where she 'whinged about how small and horrid it all was'. You just made all that up in your mind.

They did tell us- who have been made to believe by tabloids etc. that they lived a high life in the palace, that is not the case really.

It's well attested that it's a detached Christopher Wren house with over 1320 square feet, compared with the average UK square footage of 818 square feet. That's not a mews house, which is typically a small terrace property which will nevertheless cost in the region of £2 million in central London and will be far from tack storage space. Have a look at these, for example..

If I were allowed to live in a furnished house like that in Kensington rent free I would indeed be hugely privileged. If additionally I had inherited several million and was also receiving a large allowance from my father, I would be massively privileged. I wouldn't be asking my boyfriend to buy a sofa on his credit card.

Gymnopedie · 13/01/2023 15:31

OP you are PH and I claim my £5.

Quotes:

He definitely seems to have been unable to access his money and it was 'controlled', I would think

My thoughts were that he was trying to get a hold of his dad, so he can have access to his money.

In everything that is said, to me it seems like he had no access to his inheritance.

Considering all the people that sit on it to 'test'. I would most certainly call that second hand

to me it seems like he had no access to his inheritance.

'Family she never had' was scripted by the palace.

I don't think H did have access to his money. I thing that is why Charles avoided his calls. I think everyone is obliged to stay because of this.

You are providing no evidence but asserting that a lot of things are true because they're your truth. You are, you're PH aren't you!

And his house was furnished. It was not so long since it was all done up for William and Katherine. The taxpayer doesn't have to cough up just because his girlfriend doesn't like the sofa.

With what? From when?

We do know that some couple did re-do a kitchen worth a lot and moved a tennis court a few inches and gilded their driveway at taxpayer cost. Millions I believe.

We also know that H&M paid for out of their pockets for certain things, including any 'upgrades' like s certain type of wood etc on the floor as well as ........well, the whole renovation for a house that was falling apart that does not belong to them.

Doesn't have to be, the palace could pay it, it could be put through on expenses and reimbursed by the palace.

They still are in accommodation which would cost any couple a bloody fortune.

What horse tack has to do with Harry complaining he's hard up, I don't know.

As for lodging in the 'workers quarters' as a young bachelor, I also don't get why it's problematic. If you have live in accommodation for your staff it should be to a decent standard anyway. You own argument still seems to suggest that Harry should be living in a massive palace flat and anything less is an insult. Which given what other royals were given is a load of bollocks anyway.

All this attitude makes me feel is Harry, his uncle and his many cousins should have been cut lose many years ago instead of freeloading off the royal estate and taxpayer.

Get a few more tourists in through the doors. Air b n b Notts Cottage out. Complete with IKEA furniture.

It's recorded that the house was revamped by Kelly Hoppen when W and K were there. It doesn't matter with what, the point is that it was hardly a shabby unfurnished hovel when Harry moved in.

No doubt about that, it's overpriced.
But I was putting in contest how Central London works. That we are being led to believe that this couple are ungrateful whilst living in unimaginable wealth, splendour and luxury. That is not true according to even their 'pleb' neighbours.

Also 80sqm is not that much.

Didn’t someone say that the cottage’s equivalent would have been valued at about £1.2 million - bloody expensive tack room!!!! I know horse riding isn’t a cheap sport but…..,

I suspect Meghan envisaged living in a castle. Apparently they asked for room in Windsor, according to Harry’s book thought they were getting a mansion in Frogmore House then ended up in Frogmore cottage.

just because you only find shit when you start digging doesn’t mean you weren’t digging for gold. (If shit can be described as houses worth millions). And gold can take many forms, money and status.

Serenster · 13/01/2023 15:50

People happed on about how MM was a 'gold digger' who came to live this luxurious life. That is not the case.

She didn’t help herself with this narrative though, did she? This is the woman who openly threw a “Sayonara Zara” party when Suits was renewed, to mark the fact that she’d never have to shop on the high street again. She then spent $600,000 on clothes and jewellery in the 18 months she was a working royal (not including her wedding dress or her Dior maternity caftan, which could easily have cost a third as much again), and as we all know, developed a taste for travel by private jets. They spent millions refurbishing Frogmore cottage, plus they rented a country house as well.

I don’t think she arrived Harry for his money, but she was certainly happy to spend lavishly once she had the opportunity.

(And I have no idea what you mean about the Cambride’s “gilding” their driveway. It’s not gold. They did re-route the driveway at Anmer House, to improve security)
