Has anyone ever met Megan?

Out of curiosity as many people are airing views about her. But what is she actually like in the flesh?
I'm not a fan at all but she comes across as lovely when interviewed

This could be anything though - from failing to calculate maternity pay properly or failing to make reasonable adjustments for a disability. You know the kind of issue that can arise in every work place. ‘Hush money’ is a bit disingenuous - any settlement for any reason re an employment issue is usually subject to an NDA that not only bars you from discussing what happened but also that you have reached a settlement. Maybe Kate is a real mega bitch I don’t know or care, but nothing you have said is comparable to having an internal investigation in to bullying completed is it?

This is a smoking handbag pistol ...with the usual nudge, nudge ,wink, wink innuendoes from the Mail. If this was Meghan imagine the rewrite of this article.

Eh??? Sorry @vera99 you’ve completely lost me. What’s the connection between my post you’ve quoted and this article?

Barely one person whose met her on this thread has said she was nice, they’ve all commented on her awful rude behaviour but apparently being able to see that is a crime

It is so strange.
She worked for a number of years on Suits and everyone said that she was lovely and kind
She worked with charities and humanitarian organisations and they said she was wonderful.
Her former bodyguard recently spoke about her and said she was a lovely, sweet person who would do anything for anyone.
Yet we are supposed to believe that she is rude. I am not buying it

MeghanAndTheSeals · 12/01/2023 03:58

So the only thing I can conclude, upon reaching the end of this thread, is that not many people have met Meghan 🤣

However, I hear the seals think she is magical. Does that count?

JustWhattheDoctorOrdered · 12/01/2023 00:51

I have a PhD in Applied Linguistics. I am not a sock puppet. @meinteresamucho is correct.

Thank you JustWhattheDoctorOrdered! Mumsnet can confirm you're not my sock puppet if they want to but I suspect they have better things to do! 😂

Eyerollcentral - nobody has attacked your use of language - I responded when someone called me rude for simply asking if someone would post a link to a story that was mentioned. Us linguists are quite a pedantic lot though so if we're engaged on this kind of thing we will respond with details! I appreciate they didn't know I was a linguist, but they do now. And even if there are certain standards in polite discourse where you are, I hardly think mumsnet is a bastion of polite discourse! In fact, it's probably the least polite place I hang out on the internet. Even so, I wasn't being rude.

Now can we get back to talking about Meghan?! I imagine she'd be appalled if she knew the conversation had strayed from the topic of her for such an extended period of time!😂

vera99 · 12/01/2023 04:32

A cunning linguist on the thread we are honoured. Harry came over very well on Colbert a real star and he and Meghan always look so happy so I'm calling nice in the scheme of things by instinct 😀 All relative of course Harry is/was a royal after all the world no doubt of entitled pricks.

musingsinmidlife · 12/01/2023 07:27

Meeting someone briefly doesn't tell you much. People can be charming and charismatic and friendly for a brief time in public or around strangers - but completely different at home or at work.

I agree. I watched all the Colbert interview. He was witty and warm, quick witted, the audience loved him, he even made me laugh at one point.

OK... in a full 45 min interview there was one point where I thought.. 'stop banging on about that', but it was brief. He was a natural as far as the likes of Colbert and his 'chat show'.

And I agree @vera99 I think they seem very happy together.

I find not putting please anywhere in your post turns it into a demand nota request request.

Actually I wasn't so bothered about calling you rude as I was enjoying the chance to make a pun about Meghan saying manners make the man [MNer].

And no I didn't know you are "a linguist" and frankly I don't give a shiny shit if you really are, although I suspect you're not. A blog page from 2012 (!) and saying you agree with a random commentator who lives or is from Georgia in the US (!!), rather than, er, an academic research paper (!!!), doesn't exactly put me in my place Grin

I'm glad you get a sense of importance from saying you're a linguist though!

And in the Great Britain where this conversation is taking place since you, I and the website are all here, it IS rude not to ask please, but not a big deal. HTH.

‘Attacked’? Oh dear, get out of the language lab more often, I wouldn’t have have described you posting a link an attack. Aside from anything else being an academic paper I imagine it would take me about 45 seconds to find one with an opposing view.
’And even if there are certain standards in polite discourse where you are…’ please don’t forget ‘and every other English speaking country you’ve ever been in’.
I would say your original post did read as rude to more than 95% of the English speaking population of Britain and Ireland, no amount of applied linguistics is going to alter that. The use of please when making a request is one of the most basic linguistic building blocks given to children as they learn to communicate with the world around them. You appear indeed to have altered your pattern of speech during the course of your studies. I don’t imagine we’ll agree on this.

Blossomtoes · 12/01/2023 11:51

“Us linguists”? That should be “we” surely?

Eyerollcentral · 12/01/2023 11:52

Hang on @Blossomtoes she’s got a forum post from 2018 from a native polish speaker that demolishes that viewpoint

Aspiringmatriarch · 12/01/2023 11:55

As a non-linguist my view is eyerollcentral is being rude and meinterersamucho your posts have all sounded fine.

Eyeroll can you stop being snarky. Please.

I can’t tell if you are joking with that please. What does anything mean any more??

Aspiringmatriarch · 12/01/2023 12:13

It was a jokey way of making the point that adding please doesn't always soften things.

Funny I didn't read it as 'jokey', I read it as snarky. I stand corrected!

I'm not A Doctor Linguist MA, PhD, but it's common knowledge to even us non-linguist plebs that punctuation denotes tone. There's a big difference in tone between (a) when you add 'please' at the end of the sentence, and (b) when the 'please' comes after a full stop and is a standalone sentence. The latter is A Bit Bossy.

DandyCan · 12/01/2023 12:24

So no, adding 'please' as a separate sentence "doesn't soften things".

Which is why as children most of us were told to incorporate the 'please' in our sentence.

As philosophical questions go in the Royal Family section of Mumsnet that's really deep. When will this stop ? Why am I here ? Why do I care ?😀

Oh gawd, we're going to get A Philosopher along in a minute to tell us via blog posts, aren't we? Grin

Yes well I did get that. Mine was obviously a jokey response.
Adding please isn’t about softening the sound or meaning of a request is it though, it’s one of the fundamentals of manners in the English speaking world (bar Georgia, USA). I don’t think even a child of four needs a linguist, PhD or otherwise, to tell them that, do they?
Thanks for policing the level of snark on the thread, I don’t know how we’d cope without you.

We need the Book of Harry where Spare is mined for answers to the problems of our age. Could be The Gospel according to Elizabeth Hardon. It's all in their somewhere - THE TRUTH.

The Infinite Monkey Theorem is a proposition that an unlimited number of monkeys, given typewriters and sufficient time, will eventually produce a particular text, such as Spare.
