Out of curiosity as many people are airing views about her. But what is she actually like in the flesh?
I'm not a fan at all but she comes across as lovely when interviewed

@DandyCan presumably that was the Queen's thinking with Andrew?

What employment tribunal involved Andrew? Do you mean the civil litigation against him? Certainly I imagine it was advice from his lawyers as you’d be pretty remiss as an advisor if you hadn’t advised him to settle. What’s any of that got to do with Meghan? V odd

That wasn’t about employment issues was it.

I’m talking purely about employment tribunal matters, potential or otherwise. As that’s my expertise.

@Eyerollcentral

Meghan is not averse at all to issuing proceedings and as a litigator myself that is not a criticism from me! Given that she does pursue other matters it is odd she hasn’t here.

As a litigator yourself, it's surprising you don't seem to understand that there could be myriad reasons other than veracity that someone would decide not to pursue litigation?

Of course i understand that. But she has pursued much riskier cases previously - the daily mail case for example was not going her way until a very surprising judgment concluding the case, which as I am sure you are aware raised eyebrows at the time as it totally went against the grain of the case. This would seem a fairly straightforward matter by comparison. That’s why it’s interesting to me that she hasn’t pursued it.

Can anyone link to the cancer case employee please Wink

To misquote Meghan from The Cut interview: "manners make the MaN poster"

meinteresamucho · 11/01/2023 17:19

In some parts of the world, adding the word please can make a polite request sound like a command, so I tend to avoid it unless I'm actually making a demand (for example, asking a waiter to bring me a drink in a restaurant). I'm a professional linguist so I have actually read about this and it definitely holds true where I'm from. There are some threads about it on reddit if you want to know more. If anyone wants to post the link, I'll be very grateful and say thank you but it's not a demand. They don't have to.

DandyCan · 11/01/2023 17:36

Which parts of the world @meinteresamucho ? Thanks in advance

meinteresamucho · 11/01/2023 17:40

Here's an article that was written by an American who feels the same way. - dialectblog.com/2012/05/13/impolite-please/. The commenter panoptical sums up how I feel quite well in particular. They say they live in Georgia but are a native English speaker as far as I can tell. I'm in Scotland personally and to me please sounds rude on the end of a request that isn't a command. I'm not saying all Scots feel like that but I do.

DandyCan · 11/01/2023 17:49

Hmm...

I regard omitting to say please when making a request rude - without the 'please' it becomes a demand in my view. I believe that's the prevailing view in the UK, where this site was started and is registered as a company (I believe).

We need Meghan to tell us what she thinks.

meinteresamucho · 11/01/2023 18:10

I wouldn't take advice on manners from Meghan! 😂 Always interested to hear other points of view though!

I think she seems nice actually 🤷‍♀️ Absolutely cannot understand or believe the hatred for her in this country. It's beyond anything that anyone else gets, totally baffling!

Barely one person whose met her on this thread has said she was nice, they’ve all commented on her awful rude behaviour but apparently being able to see that is a crime

Suzi89 · 11/01/2023 19:48

Bigdealio · 09/01/2023 23:18

It takes a narcissist to know one.

What a stupid comment 😅 only a narcissist can tell if someone else is a narcissist? Why don’t you read the entire thread of people having bad experiences with her.

Sagharbor · 11/01/2023 21:09

This is NOT true. Do look at the preceding posts instead of making up stuff.

There are posters who have said they or someone they know have met Meghan. And they did not describe her as having been rude.

How can you just make stuff up like that?

If you google please sounds rude you get loads of results. As I said (I think), I'm a professional linguist so I study these things. Obviously not everyone has the same opinion when it comes to manners and language but this isn't an opinion that only I hold, as you'll see if you google those three words together. It brings up threads on Quora, Reddit, etc as well as blogs, Youtube videos etc and advice on sometimes avoiding please for non-native speakers. Please on the end of certain types of requests does sound rude to many people even if it doesn't to you, because, as I said, it can imply a command or demand.

I don’t need a theoretical treatise to know the vernacular usage of ‘please’ in my first language thanks. Think it’s fair to say yours is a particularly niche position, in Scotland and beyond.

meinteresamucho · 12/01/2023 00:25

You clearly do because you're unaware of the range of opinions on the matter and the fact that these things are heavily dependent on age group, regional variation and tone of voice, which will influence a person's writing style as they hear the words in their own head. I didn't use please because I think it sounds rude in this context and with my own tone. If you think it's needed, use it in your own communication but I will make my own decisions about how I write based on what is generally considered polite in the circles I move in.

JustWhattheDoctorOrdered · 12/01/2023 00:51

I have a PhD in Applied Linguistics. I am not a sock puppet. @meinteresamucho is correct.

Eyerollcentral · 12/01/2023 00:56

Lol the thing is, neither of you know where the vernacular of either myself or the previous poster originates. In the common usage where I am, the addition of please to any request is considered the bare minimum in polite discourse. In my experience in the different English speaking countries I have lived and travelled in that’s also been the case.

DandyCan · 12/01/2023 01:00

This thread is hilarious.

We now need someone who with a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Linguistics - and, crucially, zero experience in sockpuppeting - to hop on next.

DandyCan · 12/01/2023 01:02

(And as can you tell from the typos in my previous post, that person ain’t me.)

Lol lol lol! I didn’t expect these twists! Can’t wait for the Prof to join and explain why what I think means up actually means down
