The royal family

So the Royal Family isn’t racist?

Harrysfrostbittentodger · 08/01/2023 23:09

That’s what I took from Harry’s recent interview. That they didn’t accuse the royal family of being racist in the Oprah interview?!

How are other people viewing this?

Yes, but there’s a difference between excitedly wondering if the baby will have red hair, than being concerned the baby will have red hair. Concern would be that the red hair would be seen as a problem, as bad, as lesser or something.

Maybe that's where recollections varied? Harry and the family thought they were having an excited discussion, but Meghan perceived it to be a worried one.

Cariadz · 09/01/2023 02:31

It really hinges on what was said to Harry. I would know the difference between concern and excited curiosity and I’m sure Harry would too

I think Harry has demonstrated there’s quite a lot he doesn’t know the difference between. Also that it’s obvious he can be very economical with the truth and the reason he won’t say who supposedly had concerns regarding how dark the baby would be is because people would see it for what it actually was - another lie.

We don’t know what was said so it’s hard to say. I can’t believe that anyone wouldn’t know the difference between excitement and concern.
IF it was being discussed in a way that showed ‘concern’ about skin colour, that is not ok.

Of course, he could be making the whole thing up, he could (hard to believe) have interpreted it wrong or it could be exactly as he said.

We’ll probably never know. But racism is wrong, unconscious bias should be addressed and anyone saying otherwise about those topics, regardless of what happened here, is an arse.

Angiedx · 09/01/2023 02:38

I am paraphrasing but recall Harry saying he was shocked by what was said

that’s not excited chats

the fact that he is now calling this unconscious bias does not read true to me but ties into him excusing his own previous racist comments as bias

in don’t see this as a gotcha moment

if ‘concerns’ were raised about how dark their future child would be that’s racist

the biggest bias in play seems to be the willingness to dismiss very real probability of racism to suit the narrative that Meghan is always in the wrong

Maybe it was in her interest to question if it really was excitement? Sounds like she's come to believe it was.

He constantly twists the truth. Makes me feel really sick for the RF and their reputation.

hoooops · 09/01/2023 02:57

It's Harry who is saying it wasn't racism. Are you saying he is dismissing racism to suit the narrative that Megan is always wrong?

People are quite understandably amazed that it has taken him two years to correct this apparently false claim by the press, especially given his moans about his family not correcting false stories.

StartupRepair · 09/01/2023 03:02

This claim on Oprah had a massive impact on the image of the Royal Family and the legacy of his grandparents. H and M accepted an award for saying it only a few weeks ago. Now he says he never said it? And he wants to serve the Commonwealth which last month was Empire 2.0? Oh please.

AliceOlive · 09/01/2023 03:08

I think it’s upsetting and alarming that the media refers to this as a discussion about Archie. It was not, was it? I remember Harry saying the conversation occurred before they were married.

Look, it would be seriously uncomfortable to be in Meghan’s shoes, marrying into this family. I would not personally have wanted to be in her position. But in my opinion a conversation “wonder what the potential children will look like” is very different and less horrid than “wonder what this child you’ve conceived will look like.” One is perhaps going to come across as othering to the mother, the other as judging and potentially rejecting a child already conceived.

I think Harry has handled all of this in an exceptionally poor manner.

Angiedx · 09/01/2023 03:10

Is he correcting a apparently false claim

hence why I said the most important part of what he said about racism was him dismissing his own behaviour then using that same narrative regarding what concerns were raised about skin colour

what he said previously and did was racist him calling it bias doesn’t make it so

in the same way a ‘Concern’ about how dark a baby’s skin colour maybe is racist

using a different word for it doesn’t negate what it is

and also why say he was shocked

I think he should own his own behaviour as well as calling out others no matter how much he now tries to backtrack

The RF really need to put together some sort of handbook/training manual re: all the titles/traditions/expected behaviours to issue to incoming spouses.

I really think Meghan’s surprise/disappointment re: the cottage, the titles, the lack of a wage, not being able to keep expensive gifts etc has fed Harry’s childhood resentment and brought it all back to the surface, eg ‘Why haven’t you got a posh apartment like your brother?’ Should’ve been answered with ‘I can have one if I want, but would need to shuffle some oldies around, so I’m expected to get married first to justify the space/expense… besides, it’s nice to have a cottage with a separate front door for privacy’ and was instead answered with ‘Because I’ve always been second best, I’m just here to provide William with extra kidneys, woe is me etc etc’

A lot of misunderstandings could’ve been avoided with an old fashioned handbook complete with index at the back!

It was reported that she was given such a manual and access to all of the best experts who could advise her on everything necessary.

I see this at work, constantly. People coming in just ignore the documentation and advice provided, and wing it. Then they flub it and next say no one told them anything. Many Americans are bootstrappers who don’t think they need instructions or advice. (Me included, I’m evolving though)

Angiedx · 09/01/2023 03:26

Ultimately we do not know what was said

however for me Harry’s proximity due to being married to a mixed race women does not give him legitimacy over Meghan so him now saying something different does not hold more weight over what she said in the OW interview.

if Meghan states that she now does not feel the what was said by whoever was not racially motivated then fair enough I would join a chorus saying there was a duty ti correct this narrative

But she said he told her about it. Not that she heard it herself. That was rather pointed and awkward in the Oprah interview, actually.

MarshaMelrose · 09/01/2023 03:33

Yes, it was a 30 point document by Ed Fox Lane. He wasn't just Harry's private secretary but also a friend. He had no reason to undermine Meghan. For each point, he gave names and contact details for her to call for further, more detailed advice or any queries. She rang two people.

The Queen offered her Sophies services. As a woman and an incomer, she would know what Meghan was going through. Meghan turned her down, saying that she had Harry. On Netflix Harry said he didn't know the bits that women new to the family would need to know. Now, who could possibly have helped there? 🤔 It's a puzzler!

Maybe the Queen gave up at that point. You can't help people who dont want to be helped.

Sorry I know he said he told her what was said

I meant him now stating that this was unconscious bias after previously stating he was shocked and supporting the idea that it was racist ( by his silence) does not hold more weight that Meghan’s understanding of what he had told her was said

I also think the fact that clarification was provided the next day that the comment did not come from QE11 or PP further shows Harry knew exactly what was being implied

again I think this is about an unwillingness to own his own previous racist behaviour as much as soften the blows inflicted

I have heard this document referred to previously. Where did this information come from and was this confirmed by H&M or by a member of the RF

I can't think so. Meghan won't confirm it because that would undermine her complaint she was told nothing. The RF don't say anything.
But Ed Lane Fox is a pretty, well-respected guy and a friend of Harry since his army years. He's not going to lie and undermine Harry.

Thanks
I assumed from your response that this has been confirmed by Ed Lane Fox
a quick check shows sources stating this to be the case rather than Fox himself

maybe it is true

am so sceptical of anything reported now as have seen how when it’s in the media long enough it it stated as fact

keep promising myself not to go down this rabbit hole
but her I am 😆

crumpet · 09/01/2023 04:08

Megan had visited Harry at Nottingham Cottage before they married, so surely that wasn’t a surprise to her, and I had through Frogmore had been in the works for a long time in advance, so they both knew an upgrade was in the works. Did W&K also live in Nottingham Cottage at first? Not as if H&M had been singled out to live in a hovel.

custardbear · 09/01/2023 04:31

Even if they didn't mean to call them racist in the Oprah interview, which I don't believe because the did, they know the whole world was assuming that's what they implied ... so why not speak out ... not leave it two years then try and take it back ... these clowns are completely disgraceful lying narcissists- I'm flabbergasted 😮

Fozzleyplum · 09/01/2023 04:34

My recollection from the Oprah interview was that Meghan said there had been ' comments and concerns' about the colour of the baby's skin whilst she was pregnant with Archie. Oprah asked her if that was why Archie didn't have a title, and Meghan confirmed that was correct. Cue close up on Oprah's face, looking aghast. Harry looked uncomfortable.

Harry said, either in the interview itself, or elsewhere at around the same time, I can't remember, that there had been speculation much earlier - at the time of the engagement - about what any future children might look like. It was certainly implied, and was taken by the press and commentators, that they were both talking about the same comments, but their stories didn't match. They was plenty of opportunity for H&M to clarify this in the 2 years since the Oprah interview, but they didn't. What did Harry say about silence...

I’m a hippy, anti royal, and deffo anti racist…. I have been waiting for him to reveal the racist to us!!! And now they’re not racist?! Harry you sell-out!!!!

don’t get me started on him making no comment about dodgy Andrew… ugh!

Tbd to him I think his words on " people being protected" And other things he said about other members of the family using the press for there gain was to do with him in parts.

RealMcKoy · 09/01/2023 04:50

Personally,I wonder why nobody non white is not talking about the elephant in the room; the good possibility that the somebody didn't mention what Archie would look like from a place of concern, but the fact that what Archie would look like triggered Megan.

Why? Well Megan is a racially confused, white identified, white socialised, been the only non white in a room of whites most of the time in her adult life, never had a Black or even biracial friend until she got with Harry.
These are NOT the characteristics of a part Black/Black person who is pro Black and coming from Los Angeles, not the very white Rhode Island. And funnily enough, in the U.S, Black or part Black people who want to find community in Blackness, do, no matter if they are an oasis surrounded by whiteness. that is just Blackness in the U.S 101; to be surrounded by white people no matter how large or small a "Black community" is.

Megan has adult lifelong displayed the characteristics of somebody running away and wanting to erase their Blackness. And that is okay, for them, but it is no signifier of sanity or security in identity and not the type of person I concern myself with as they have no use to me and will sell me out. Her type is not uncommon, even in Black countries.

Of course to a person like this, the colour of any future children, even though they themselves are pale and their spouse very Anglo, THEY would be scared that any future child would have the colour that they themselves lack outwith fake tan selectively used , depending on the occasion. I always believed that Megan got so triggered that she turned an innocuous conversation into her being concerned about any unambiguous Blackness manifesting in her child's looks and projected that concern upon the Royal family. She hasn't facially erased her previous unambiguous Blackness and socialised herself to have obviously non white children or children that cannot be "tweaked' into whiteness at a later age, just like she did on her C.V.

She is as far from being Kathleen Cleaver as we are from living on the Moon.

Doria wanted this, hence why she was content to have her daughter live white without even giving her the privilege of being in touch with the two sides of herself in any emulsified manner. Mixed race people are not unique in Los Angeles.

So it is no surprise that at the first hurdle to her Happy Go Lucky White Karen Woman act Megan got shook and has been "karening" since, getting her fans to act as if her and her Nazi armband brandishing Huzzband being ignored by his kin is some sort of Civil Rights pursuit, when the real pro Blackness is "why should we concern ourselves that a white socialised mixed woman with a dopey , non Black pride having mother marrying one of the two people that we KNOW are racist in the Royal family may run out of money in Montecito once she and her moronic, racist husband have rinsed dry her previous asscociation with the Royal family and therefore may have to downsize the penury of Santa Barbara? Why is this a Black concern?"

This is what happens to people in the West who have lost seriousness and seek validation through celebrity and Hollyweird, the number one propaganda arm of white supremacy. Our more Eastern/ developing skinfolk can't afford to be so dumb.

Malcolm X is laughing in his grave. He warned us Black people not to seek emancipation through celebrity. But to seek validation through an obviously anti Black woman and racist man , just because he is a member of one of the primary symbols of white imperialism and then to pretend that one is against said family when it goes tits up?

That's just trying to have one's pudding and nyam it same time.

So many of us don't deserve to have access to wi fi just to display the rich white validation so obviously needed and have the gall to try and turn said pathology into a civil rights pursuit.

It's all so rinky dink and cannot compare to the relative integrity and intellect of previous generations of Black Race Equality battle.
Unnu bawl too mucking fuch and forget how to move in silence!
Thank you Harry and Megan for showing how fake most public Black Civil Rights discourse has become. You got some fucking use! Now we might overstand that we cannot tear down massa's house by using massa's tools.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 09/01/2023 04:59

And yet people still believe a word that they say. It's all bullshit. They could have easily set the record straight after the Oprah interview, when the queen was still alive and said they weren't accusing them of racism. Instead he let his grandmothers final years be miserable. What a Prince hey. I hope they get the backlash they deserve. They are nothing but spoilt, narcissistic whiners

Tbd to him I think his words on " people being protected" And other things he said about other members of the family using the press for there gain was to do with him in parts.

But he’s not protecting anyone. He’s in actual fact throwing a whole family under the bus when it comes to guessing games as to who it was that supposedly had concerns about the wee ones colour. Instead he should name the person and let them give their version of events if they cared to. But he can’t because he knows he’s lied.

He hasn’t missed anyone close to him in his book. They’ve all been given his version of their character. The only person he’s protecting in this instance is himself and perhaps Meghan.
