It has been horrible at times, but I refuse to back down to bullies.
The most hurtful was when I tried to discuss DD's experiences of racism, and was accused of being a 'white saviour'.
Then when I tried to explain that many POC - including friends in South Africa - just didn't have MM on their radar, didn't even have Serena Williams on their radar, as tennis just didn't register.
I was chatting to some (black) friends in SA this week and had meant to ask them their views on Meghan to report back... but listening to their struggles about the cost of living, wages staying the same since 2020, members of their family having lost jobs and their wages having to stretch even further, going to bed hungry... well, it would have been insulting. So I didn't.
They knew DD as a baby with her birth family, and are delighted she is thriving here. They are part of her life and help her stay in touch with her birth community. I help support their children's education.
And yet on MN I get vilified by a handful of people, who denigrate the relationships I have with some truly amazing people who live with the daily experience of racism and oppression - who I am privileged to have got to know on a personal level, partly because of DD.
