I think anyone would be a miffed if they were separated from their husband at an event. Wouldn't you be missed off is someone did that to you?

She’s a ‘strong’ independent woman I’m sure she can manage not clinging on to her husband like a limpet for few hours.

BreatheAndAgain · 04/01/2023 07:30

I can see KC abdicating when he is too old to work as King, rather than riding it out like his mum. If he plans to abdicate, I'd give it about 15 years. George will be 25 and have finished his education, Charlotte 23, William 55, which seems like a brilliant age to be King.

I am intrigued by all these ancient ceremonies, would Harry really have to bow and swear his loyalty? How could he when he has already stabbed them all in the back? It's the poshest soap opera, isn't it?

Yes I misunderstood the previous quote.

She was way too young for him. It was creepy.

It was a different time. It was not seen as creepy by the majority of people back then. Her father married her mother also with a large age gap and this was extremely common in aristocratic circles.

A 14 yo dating an 18 yo wasn’t seen as creepy either. Or a 16 yo mid 20s. My parents didn’t bat an eyelid when I was 16 and dating a much older man. My dd is 14. She would definitely find all of these things creepy, thank goodness.

It isn’t possible to judge the past by today’s standards. It was legally possible for a 14 yo boy to marry a 12 yo girl until 1929, which was 51 years before Charles and Diana married. Their wedding was 41 years ago. A lot changes over the decades.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/01/2023 07:46

… that should be 52 years. But anyway… and I suppose as we are in 2023, C&D married 42 years ago…

Bunnyfuller · 04/01/2023 07:51

He wants the family back that he left in a hissy fit and has then gone on to trash on TV to anyone willing to bung him a few $$.

Yeah, really.

I can't see the marriage lasting.
If Charlie lives another 25 years, when William is king he will never accept Old Megsie because she is Trouble and when his children grow up, Hapless will not be needed

Nice. The marriage is going to fail, speculation like this is horrible.

Old Megsie and Hapless. Do you ever listen to yourself?

No I wouldn’t and honestly I think it would be pretty pathetic to not be able to cope without your husband for a few hours while he does his job. And yes, I know he’s not a working royal but by even turning up he’s accepting the responsibilities involved. If you can’t cope then you should stay away surely?

KC is already mid 70s, 15 years puts him at 90, I'm not convinced he has the good health his parents had at the same age.
I think it's more likely 10 years he'll hand over, possibly using Prince Regent or something

But in 10 years with Wills kids still being young, and Charles and Ann both get on in years, and Harry out the picture. So really just W&K Ed&S the Slimmed Monarchy becomes a bit too slim, cut to bare bones. I think William might end up asking a couple of his cousins to step up. Possibly Zara to take some of her mums workload, If that is something she'd want to do.

BethDuttonsTwin · 04/01/2023 08:04

Also see this morning that the palace have clarified that the H&M had an open invite to spend Christmas with the RF despite his claims that no one wants to reconcile with them 🙄

I don't buy into that. I remember my dad saying she was too young for him. I think it's a lack of morals.

If this is true, and they turned down the invitation, how can H whinge about being cut out of the family? Did they think the Palace wouldn't make the invitation public, invoking the "never complain, never explain" mantra?

TheCockatoosCrest · 04/01/2023 08:10

It seems the tide is turning on them in the US a little now too, publications that typically used to give positive coverage are now being critical -Variety, Newsweek, The Atlantic.

It is difficult to see where the redemption arc will be at this stage. At some point they need to change the focus - the same repeated vague and non specific jibes at the monarchy are getting very boring.

I can't think of another celebrity or public figure who has so repeatedly disparaged their family in the media and come out of it looking good?

Harry says that silence is betrayal. I think most people see that there is dignity in silence.

The coronation will be fascinating. They are between a rock and a hard place. He is already criticised for hypocrisy - accusing the Monarchy of racism but then repeatedly using their titles. How can you then get down on your knee and kiss your father's hand swearing loyalty and devotion not only to the King but to the Crown. But if he refuses - is he still a Royal Duke?

Oh well that's all right then there really was no need to go and on Newsnight and make up stories about Pizza Express and not sweating then. Oh and if Lord Louis Mountbatten , Charles's favorite Uncle Dickie abused young boys whilst Viceroy of India and thereafter (FBI files) it was a perk of the job and they were probably just street urchins anyways. But tbf your position will be exactly what the RF thinks privately "droit de seigneur" and all that.

Lobelia123 · 04/01/2023 08:19

I've got a feeling he's got an awful dawning realisation that he's stuffed up in epic proportions, but he's too far in to back track and the only way is to double down and make even more of a stink. Surely internally he must just be thinking, you absolute idiot!!!! Talk about self-imploding. He had all the advantage, all the charisma, people loved him as he had such a wonderful natural touch. If there were issues of competition between the brothers, he could have taken his role as the spare and absolutely outperformed William and Kate on every level as they are dutiful and nice but completely lack star quality. Harry really is a first class chump. Hes blown what was essentially a fabulous gig - all the advantages and prestige of the position, with out many of the burdens/

diddl · 04/01/2023 08:19

She was way too young for him. It was creepy.

C&D were similar ages to her parents when they married.

I think that her mum became the youngest bride to marry in Westminster Abbey for several years-she was 18.

diddl · 04/01/2023 08:22

It was a different time.

It was only the 80s!

I think it was acceptable in their class.

I must admit when Meghan mentioned '#Metoo at the Fab Four interview, I thought you've upset most of the men in the family.

TheCockatoosCrest · 04/01/2023 08:36

Be interesting to see how these interviews go. If Cooper and Bradby go down the Oprah softly softly wide eyed astonishment route with zero critical examination I think they will come out of the interviews badly.

I wonder if Cooper at least will take more of an Emily Maitlis approach of seemingly friendly questioning but drawing Harry out more than he realises at the time.

BlackFriday · 04/01/2023 08:38

I think Harry has been persuaded by some mental health 'guru' that the healthiest thing (for him) is to purge himself of all his anger and resentments publicly and then, from a clean slate, start afresh and rebuild relationships.
Unfortunately, that's a shit idea and is not going to work.

TheCockatoosCrest · 04/01/2023 08:50

Harry meeting Meghan really seems like a sliding doors moment in his life. I don't blame Meghan at all for what has happened but I think they are two people that bring the worst traits out in each other.

He has obviously always been a very difficult character - ideally he needed someone to talk him down not encourage him

IMHO it was pure greed and grandiosity.

They wanted half in half out - so they could make more ££££ and build their “brand” bigger globally outside the RF where their status would always sit constrained by their position in the hierarchy and geography.

However they have achieved the ££££ and grown the “brand” to global proportions - just not quite clear how positively that brand is perceived currently and if they can turn it around and monetise further in the longer term.

SnowlayRoundabout · 04/01/2023 09:07

I wonder if he's stupid enough to muck up the coronation by refusing to swear an oath of loyalty or changing the words of his oath? If so that will be the final straw.
