The royal family

To think the palace should issue a statement condemning Clarkson's comments?

I'm all for their dignified silence on everything else. I don't trust Harry or Megan. But Jeremy Clarkson's comments are horrific and were made in Britain against a woman who has become a member of their family.

NOT issuing a statement sends out such a hurtful message and indicates that anything can be said about her, for all they care. Even the MPs have managed to put something on paper.

It's clear that Harry will be beyond hurt if they do nothing and this time he'd have a point, IMO. Each comment like this published in the press erodes the boundaries for online trolls. If I was Meghan, I wouldn't feel I could return to the UK as it's clear the normal rules don't apply to her. What will her children think of Britain when they grow up and become aware of these articles? Won't they be likely to wonder how the palace responded? While it makes no sense to try and placate Harry generally, letting this play out without one word of censure to the press seems needlessly provocative.

It wouldn't be difficult to issue a statement saying something to the effect of "We stand against bullying and hate speech..." Two lines to indicate they see it and it's not ok.

Or not?

'I've already had someone say to me today that Camila is obviously wicked step mother'

🙄

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet so we agree they do comment.

I think it would be an excellent occasion to send a message about how they abhore violence against women, and anything that normalises violence against women

They don't even need to make it about Meghan if they don't want to, just address the violence part

Would be perfectly fitting given Camillas work with domestic violence charities, and a non political response

The fact they haven't is disappointing

This. I recall not too long ago Kate going and leaving flowers at the vigil for Sarah, yet here is a clear case of hateful verbal violence which has a drip, drip effect of how men are able to voice quite loudly, and publicly, such shameful misogyny against a women, and not a peep from the palace. Even though the woman in question happens to be married to the Kings son. Shameful.

The Sun should sack Jeremy Clarkson as a columnist. And no other newspaper employ him.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:51

People aren't sure who JC is but it looks like the general consensus is that the RF are very toxic.... so maybe a statement would help?

It's dreadful pr

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet so we agree they do comment.

No we don’t agree.

The RF don’t for ally comment on articles of people’s opinions of them.

So the King’s daughter in law is okay to make her own comments to the media, peddling lies about her husbands family? Isnt that double standards?

When someone calls for her to be publicly stripped and have shit thrown at them - and this person is a prominent commentator in a prominent newspaper, I do think something needs to be said.

pelargoniums · 20/12/2022 16:51

If the royal family can make a statement condemning racism after Lady Susan Hussey, they can just as easily make a statement condemning misogyny and misgynoir after the Jeremy Clarkson column. They just don’t want to.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:52

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet just read this or any other thread about it...

FleasNavidad · 20/12/2022 16:18

Well they wined and dined him the day after didn't they?

No, Ewan Venters Christmas party was on the Wednesday so before the comments were published.

I don’t normally agree with cancel culture in any way, but I would HAPPILY make an exception for this total twat.

Whatsmore, the Sun needs to be boycotted.

Yes it's the Sun that needs to be taking action here not the blinking royal family.

He reallt is a ridiculous man, arrogant stupid and rude I've no idea why some folk like him.

Nothing stands in the way of tweed and sex parties, darling

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:52

yep Kate "remembered walking the streets" etc comment.

Georgeskitchen · 20/12/2022 16:53

They didn't do it for Diana
They didn't do it for Kate
They didn't do it for Camilla
They didn't do it for Fergie
All of whom were on the receiving end of some pretty unpleasant stuff.
They didn't comment on the "squidgygate" tapes
They didn't comment on the "Tampax tapes"
They didn't comment on the Andrew situation.
They just took it on the chin and carried on.

CuteAsDuck · 20/12/2022 16:53

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet they've responded to statements in the press on other occasions. At least one I can think of off the top of me head but I'm sure there are others.

Not a common occurrence by any means but certainly has been down and will be done again I'm sure. Only if it suits them I'm sure.

That’s different. Lady Susan was a member of the royal household. She made a racist comment to a visitor on their watch.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:53

why did Andrew give that interview then?

Sorry what do you mean? I’ve lost the context!

If the royal family can make a statement condemning racism after Lady Susan Hussey,

another comment from the people who don't comment 😆😆

No national publication on the royal rota sanctioned and distributed mumsnet hate speech so it feels a bit different.

So if Clarkson had posted exactly the same comments on here hiding behind a pseudonym then that would be OK would it?

It would be slightly better, in my view, because it wouldn't have been passed for publication by a national paper and read so widely. Either is awful though.

MPs don't respond to every negative comment in the press but they seem to agree this is different somehow - a new low that needs resisting.

Perhaps I was naive to think the palace speaks to that occasionally. I just remember Catherine attending the vigil for Sarah Everard and how right that seemed - the royal family using their role to centre the female victim of an abhorrent crime. The misogyny expressed by Clarkson has a long shadow if it normalises degrading speech against women, or sets a precedent for some women being fair game. I thought they could have set things to one side and speak to that.

Agree - even better the Scum can go the way of the NOTW and shut themselves down for all I care.

CuteAsDuck · 20/12/2022 16:54

Excuse all the typos! That time of day.

Agree with you absolutely re. The Sun @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet!

CruCru · 20/12/2022 16:55

The thing is, Jeremy Clarkson loves attention and controversy (I wouldn’t be surprised if his contract actually says that he is to be controversial). His pay may be linked to the number of below the line comments and articles about whatever he wrote - if I were his agent, I would insist on it.

So ignore him. The way to upset him is to deny him publicity.
