To think the palace should issue a statement condemning Clarkson's comments?

I'm all for their dignified silence on everything else. I don't trust Harry or Megan. But Jeremy Clarkson's comments are horrific and were made in Britain against a woman who has become a member of their family.

NOT issuing a statement sends out such a hurtful message and indicates that anything can be said about her, for all they care. Even the MPs have managed to put something on paper.

It's clear that Harry will be beyond hurt if they do nothing and this time he'd have a point, IMO. Each comment like this published in the press erodes the boundaries for online trolls. If I was Meghan, I wouldn't feel I could return to the UK as it's clear the normal rules don't apply to her. What will her children think of Britain when they grow up and become aware of these articles? Won't they be likely to wonder how the palace responded? While it makes no sense to try and placate Harry generally, letting this play out without one word of censure to the press seems needlessly provocative.

It wouldn't be difficult to issue a statement saying something to the effect of "We stand against bullying and hate speech..." Two lines to indicate they see it and it's not ok.

Or not?

The king is there to support all Britons, just as he is there to support all nations Britain has colonised and who still retain him as symbolic head of their governments. That means supporting ‘all’.

One of his family’s members is being dehumanised in the British press -a woman who is also black. If he can’t come out in support of her, his own daughter in law, it leaves people wondering who else he will not champion. If he refuses to champion all but the safest, most complacent of his subjects, then what point is he? It’s continuity, but of what?

She isn't black.

She isn't black.

Careful. I got a post deleted yesterday for stating the obvious.

Did they ever issue a statement condemning journalists who compared their own daughter to a horse?

It isn't the RFs job to monitor and push back on every negative statement though? Do you think if they issue a statement it will make any difference? They will get attacked because of all the times they didn't do statements! They cannot win - that is why not doing statements in the first place is the right tactic for them. Jeremy Clarkson did not speak for the RF - He spoke for himself and the people who chose to publish that horrible article are the ones that need to sort it.

Nailed it. If they issued a statement at this point the Sussex's would say 'see? You can respond when you want to. You were lying when you said you couldn't protect us from the media stories'
Anyway it wasn't their fault. It shouldn't have got past the editors.

In fairness a plastic surgeon posted doctored pictures on his Instagram of him giving Catherine Botox saying she ‘loved it’. I think that statement was to ensure people knew the pictures were fake.

so they do comment @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet?

I don't think it's exactly the same situation. A doctored photo of Kate getting Botox, or before and afters, or I don't know what I haven't seen the actual photo, has the potential to affect the general public. Women might see that photo and think "oh I want to get Botox too and I want to go to that doctor because that's the doctor the Kate goes to." Speaking out and saying that the photo was not legitimate is a way to protect people from potentially being taken advantage of.

That is quite the reach. I doubt the Palace were thinking of anyone other than Kate when they spoke out about it!

Of course is not the same thing.

One case is about an individual trying to make money using the name / image of a member of the Royal family, over something very trivial such as looks, gossip and minor cosmetic procedures

The other is about an individual repeatedly making money using the name / image of a member of the Royal family, using vile misogynistic language and sexualised images of violence and humiliation, in the context of previous credible threats of violence towards MM (not from JC) and, more generally, femicide (in the UK men kill 2 women a week on average; the Met police harbours rapists and stalkers, etc.).

I know which issues I find more important.
