To think the palace should issue a statement condemning Clarkson's comments?

I'm all for their dignified silence on everything else. I don't trust Harry or Megan. But Jeremy Clarkson's comments are horrific and were made in Britain against a woman who has become a member of their family.

NOT issuing a statement sends out such a hurtful message and indicates that anything can be said about her, for all they care. Even the MPs have managed to put something on paper.

It's clear that Harry will be beyond hurt if they do nothing and this time he'd have a point, IMO. Each comment like this published in the press erodes the boundaries for online trolls. If I was Meghan, I wouldn't feel I could return to the UK as it's clear the normal rules don't apply to her. What will her children think of Britain when they grow up and become aware of these articles? Won't they be likely to wonder how the palace responded? While it makes no sense to try and placate Harry generally, letting this play out without one word of censure to the press seems needlessly provocative.

It wouldn't be difficult to issue a statement saying something to the effect of "We stand against bullying and hate speech..." Two lines to indicate they see it and it's not ok.

Or not?

Don’t agree, they can’t comment on every awful thing written about their family members, that would be an insane amount of work. Just ignore. What he wrote says far more about him and has damaged his reputation far more than Meghan’s I reckon.

This really. The RF generally don’t pass comment on public discourse, especially not when there are already MP’s weighing in making it political and weighty public opinion being tossed around. There isn’t really any value in them getting their oar in.

There may be leaks or other subtle comments hinting at their various positions but if they make a formal statement they’re breaking away from their normal MO.

No they shouldn't. They aren't working members of the Royal family.

If Harry & Meghan want to make a statement let them.

I think it would be an excellent occasion to send a message about how they abhore violence against women, and anything that normalises violence against women

They don't even need to make it about Meghan if they don't want to, just address the violence part

Would be perfectly fitting given Camillas work with domestic violence charities, and a non political response

The fact they haven't is disappointing

A random statement about how they hate violence would just be really weird. Of course they hate violence against women which is why Camilla and Sophie do the charity work they do.

This is a fair point. H&M are more than capable of making their own statement - it’s not like they haven’t got a platform.

No national publication on the royal rota sanctioned and distributed mumsnet hate speech so it feels a bit different.

So if Clarkson had posted exactly the same comments on here hiding behind a pseudonym then that would be OK would it?

NO they shouldn't we Brits seem to be always kneeling or apologising

So they should, they are apologising for the wrongs that they did. Why would anyone have an issue with that?

cakeorwine · 20/12/2022 16:42

Yes, they should.
The King's daughter in law has had some awful comments about her made by a prominent commentator in a prominent newspaper. It's caused an outcry in the country.

Every day there are articles in the media. Prominent commentators giving their opinions.

At some point this needs to stop.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:42

They should because they commented on Kate & botox which is a non story compared to this.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:44

this is true

Livelovebehappy · 20/12/2022 16:44

Silence is golden would be my advice to the Royal Family. I’m sure Harry and Meghan would love a response, which may then allow them to squeeze in another Netflix episode for a few bucks. The RF shouldn’t lower themselves to the level of H and M.

Unifolorn · 20/12/2022 16:44

They never comment really, they did allow harry to do a formal press release about the media's treatment of meghan when they were a new couple which was quite unprecedented. As is meghan isn't a working royal now but I agree the press need some more robust guidelines.

Rhondaa · 20/12/2022 16:44

No the rf absolutely should not issue a statement on what a known arsehole said in The Sun.

It'd be a slippery slope to chat show reveals then reality shows.

Best not dignify it with a response.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:42

In fairness a plastic surgeon posted doctored pictures on his Instagram of him giving Catherine Botox saying she ‘loved it’. I think that statement was to ensure people knew the pictures were fake.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:45

Not really. That RF don’t respond to every unpleasant article.

No one is asking that but I would say this was more than unpleasant

So the King’s daughter in law is okay to make her own comments to the media, peddling lies about her husbands family? Isnt that double standards?

I absolutely hate to say this, but this isn’t true.

The man ACTUALLY thumped somebody for not bringing him hot food and still 3million people signed a petition to stop him from losing his job.

Some men are just Teflon coated. I’d rather JC was ditched from any gig he has going - that would cause a much bigger impact than statement from the RF.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:47

so they do comment @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet?

They don’t respond to hateful articles either. Dignified silence is the right route.

Can you quote where she has said she hates them more than Rose West, wants them shamed naked & have shit thrown at them?

They commented about a libellous claim and a doctored photo, not someone’s (albeit hateful) opinion.

sinkyt · 20/12/2022 16:49

Why on earth are posters trying to justify & victim blame? Forget the subject, the article is hateful misogyny & shouldn't be seen as the status quo!

LovelyRachel · 20/12/2022 16:49

My family live in Germany and Luxembourg and they know about this article too.

People aren't sure who JC is but it looks like the general consensus is that the RF are very toxic.... so maybe a statement would help?

I've already had someone say to me today that Camila is obviously wicked step mother. (As a step mum myself, this really hurt! Is she bringing back the wicked step mother stereotype?)

Who’s victim blaming?

plenty of articles from "sources"so we could just have one of them...
