Meghan’s mock curtsy

full Disclosure I am no Meghan fan. However if we don’t try to see people as multifaceted and full of attributes, strengths and weaknesses we will never understand the truth. I honestly believe when she did that mock curtsy she was completely taking the piss out of herself. She says something afterwards such as “ I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing “. I think harry is embarrassed at the dramatic bow and also a bit sad that she is resorting to taking the piss out of herself.

What's with this belief that she was laughing at herself, at her naivety? her gaucheness?. She's highly educated with a degree in International Relations, has had years of ballet training, years of acting classes and practice was a minor celebrity and millionaire's in her own right and yet wants us to believe she is naive, gauche, shy and cute at 41? behave.

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 15:41

@VladmirsPoutine but people can dislike her ? They have put themselves out there now so will get negative comments as well as positive
If you answer something ambiguous expect people to read how they see
Whilst I agree some go over the top , they haven't helped themselves and are still very happy to hold on to their titles which makes them hypocrites in my book
If you disagree so much with the institution why keep the titles ?

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 15:42

@Wiluli and so may other stuff be that other countries do but you know when in rome and all that

Jakadaal · 11/12/2022 15:46

Sorry but I can't believe that she didn't know she had to curtsy to the Queen when she was dating Harry Hmm plenty of time to practice! Her self mockery is just another staged 'look at me'

FictionalCharacter · 11/12/2022 15:49

I don't believe for a moment that she actually did that. The previous story was that Harry and someone else (maybe Eugene) quickly taught her to curtsey before she went in. If they'd taught her to do a simple little bob down and up, why would she then have done a ridiculous deep bow with her head down and her arms spread out? When she tells the story, Harry looks very awkward.
Besides, you'd think that being an actress, she'd be capable of learning this stuff pretty quickly.

healthadvice it's not about disliking her or not. I think all the royals should get proper jobs. She's open to scrutiny. It's the racialised comments, the veil of merely disliking her when its actually a lot deeper than that. When people say she's ungrateful as was in another thread or say she's fake and they don't trust her, for what!? Do you trust Prince William. It's too much.
I can't speak to why keep they titles because in their position I'd do the same. The notion of being 'royal' is so ridiculous in my view that if I were royal I'd make a song and dance about it. I'd open town halls wearing a ball gown and a diamond encrusted tiara.

derxa · 11/12/2022 15:57

The royal men greet each other with a kiss on cheek. That's their tradition as is curtseying or bowing to the monarch.

“ and all that “ is no longer accepted as the norm . Lots of traditions are simply stupid . She did comply while visiting . Doesn’t mean she is not allowed to make fun of how stupid it is .

I think she is/ was taking the mickey out of herself but also implying the gesture is ridiculous which is not for her to say. It is a U.K. custom when meeting the queen. Would she take the piss out of another nations custom when meeting their head of state?
harry looked embarrassed as he was!
I think it just shows that she thinks monarchy is like acting on a stage which it is to some extent but behind close doors the queen is still the queen. She misunderstood that imo.

There’s also plenty of pics of people curtsying to her which she appears to be enjoying.

StickyCricket · 11/12/2022 10:09

I did initially think she was taking the piss out of the monarchy and the tradition, especially as it was coupled with her remarks about the medieval theatre nights in America.

I was also a bit bemused as it differs from her previous account of meeting the Queen and Fergie showing her how to curtesy.

But I can also see how it could be viewed as her being self deprecating.

I’m starting to wonder if Netflix have done them dirty tbh. The opening scenes of Meghan being interview and asked years ago whether she’d ‘choose’ William or Harry despite her now insistence she didn’t know who he was, images of paparazzi which are completely unrelated to H&M, the curtesy scene (especially given the look on Harry’s face), the paparazzi ‘chase’ in the car in which there were no paparazzi chasing them. The inconsistencies aren’t a good look.

I did wonder about the editing choices too. The very first clips of Harry, unable to remember the day or date - is that really how he wants to present himself to the world?

Why do it at all? Who is likely to laugh along with her? Melissa Mcarthy if you pay her enough (again)? Even her beloved seems unsure about it. A career shift sideways into comedy does not beckon.

She’s certainly no Jennifer Aniston or Goldie Hawn. Actually I’d love it if they gave her a Rom Com and she was the star, I’d like to see how she manages to carry it 😁

sashagabadon · 11/12/2022 16:58

Is the curtsy uniquely British? Do other monarchies do similar? I have no idea but would have thought it is a global behaviour in monarchies or at least European rather than just for British royalty?
would she have taken the piss out of the Norwegian monarch or Thai monarchy or Japanese or Moroccan?
i bet not.

I’d like to see her take the piss out of greeting Saudi royalty.

NutellaEllaElla · 11/12/2022 17:03

She didn't have to curtsey. No one has to. It's voluntary. Look it up.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 17:04

@BellePeppa Why would you like to see her take the piss out of greeting the Saudi royalty? What do you think would happen to her?

bakalava · 11/12/2022 17:06

She would be deprived of the odd diamond here or there?!

Members of the European royal families certainly curtsey to each other.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 17:11

@BellePeppa Was incredibly specific in what she wrote. It wasn't the Danish royal family, or the Dutch or the Belgian royal family. Specifically she wishes to witness what would happen when it's the Saudi royal family and you know why. This kind of depravity is what differentiates 'disliking' MM from something far more sinister.

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2022 17:13

I thought Meghan's curtsey looked like a joke that did not pay off. She just looked silly I thought. But I do get that she will have thought curtseying was a. bit weird. But then again as a PP has said - we don't put our hands on our hearts when the National Anthem is played - when in Rome - I think curtseying to the Queen - as Head of state - is more of a mark of respect to the head of state not to the woman herself IYSWIM

Many may not take this the same way but when I got my degree as did my son when he had his , we gave a bow to the Chancellor - as a mark of him ( in my case her ) representing the institution.

Minimalme · 11/12/2022 17:14

The curtesy was interesting because she delivered it as if she was mocking herself but Harry clearly wasn't sharing the joke.

It reminded me of when I used to spend time with my Mum and she would tell a story as if she was laughing at herself while communicating an entirely different narrative.

I used to squirm with embarrassment and wish for it to be over.

Missing the point entirely, I thought she could have been a dancer, her arms were beautiful.

ThighMistress · 11/12/2022 17:17

It is rude to laugh at people’s traditions. It’s one thing to think that the rf is archaic and to be surprised by family members bowing and scraping behind closed doors, but to spout about it in a documentary? To liken it to a cheesy mediaeval banquet? RUDE!

And, what is more, she wouldn’t have touched Harry with a barge pole if he hadn’t been a prince. So the Princess Bride thing was the reason she was there at all.

They change their stories so many times it’s making me dizzy. No doubt the truth will eventually out because I’m now heartily sick of their preposterous truth.

Mocking another country's customs ,however bizarre you may think they are, is not really good manners.
Perhaps she should try it in Iran and see how she fares!!

an outstandingly weird comment. What’s Iran got to do with any of this? Why would she be there?

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 17:35

@RaRaRaspoutine Another poster mentioned Saudi, there's very specific reason why these posters are bringing up these countries. It's actually quite shocking when you think about what they are suggesting and how much they would enjoy witnessing it.

This is a complete red herring.
