Meghan’s mock curtsy

full Disclosure I am no Meghan fan. However if we don’t try to see people as multifaceted and full of attributes, strengths and weaknesses we will never understand the truth. I honestly believe when she did that mock curtsy she was completely taking the piss out of herself. She says something afterwards such as “ I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing “. I think harry is embarrassed at the dramatic bow and also a bit sad that she is resorting to taking the piss out of herself.

Actually, she is coming across as a bit xenophobic, if anything.

fairydustt · 11/12/2022 11:32

When I first saw the clip, taken out of context, I thought it was rude and mocking, when I watched the documentary I saw it more as taking the piss out of herself. Problem is initially it was taken out of context as you could only see a tiny clip

Penaltyshootoutfan · 11/12/2022 11:32

I think she was both mocking herself and the tradition.

I think she is/ was taking the mickey out of herself but also implying the gesture is ridiculous which is not for her to say. It is a U.K. custom when meeting the queen. Would she take the piss out of another nations custom when meeting their head of state?
harry looked embarrassed as he was!
I think it just shows that she thinks monarchy is like acting on a stage which it is to some extent but behind close doors the queen is still the queen. She misunderstood that imo.

If you marry into a culture that demands you curtsey to your grandmother in law I think you have a right to an opinion on it.

Frapped · 11/12/2022 11:35

*she was asked to follow the cultural norms so she should get an opinion on it. She didn't demand a hug and some pie because her Nan might have done that for Harry

Yeah, sure she is. Taking the piss out of an ancient outdated custom that demands you show subservience to your betters makes her the phobic one. I guess turning it around makes people feel less racist in hating her though.

Did the queen go along with all Meghan's cultural baggage?

Delandra · 11/12/2022 11:44

I’m neither here nor there about the Royals/Harry and Meghan. But I have been watching how the press and social media have been turning on Harry and, in particular, Meghan. Re the curtsey; I agree that Meghan was poking fun at herself. As an aside, I was unaware and found it strange that the family had to bow/curtsey in private to the Queen. The current re description of this as evidence of her malice towards the Royals is another example of the very negative bias she is facing.

bakalava · 11/12/2022 11:49

Well if she claims they are like that in private but there is no other proof then it is more likely to be made up than not as she lies a lot. She is mocking the hand that fed her - it doesn't matter if it is the Queen or a matriarch in a council flat. Lack of respect for practices valued by others is silly and unpleasant.

Redcrayons · 11/12/2022 11:50

Having watched it it’s clear she’s taking the mickey out of herself. She didn’t know what to do and she looked a bit ridiculous, I don’t think she was mocking the queen or the custom.

his stony faced expression whilst she’s saying it is the most interesting thing about that anecdote.

bakalava · 11/12/2022 11:59

Why do it at all? Who is likely to laugh along with her? Melissa Mcarthy if you pay her enough (again)? Even her beloved seems unsure about it. A career shift sideways into comedy does not beckon.

SallyWD · 11/12/2022 12:02

I have nothing against the Queen, she did a great job. All this curtseying stuff is just ridiculous though. The fact that the royal family can't even be relaxed and warm with each other in private is, frankly, very, very weird. Charles and Harry and all the rest of them grew up seeing their mum/grandma as The Queen first and foremost, having to bow before her (in private!!). This was clearly something SHE wanted or it wouldn't have happened. No wonder they're all so fucked up and unable to form normal relationships.

Even if she was mocking the custom, why not? It deserves to be mocked.

Absolutely agree. It’s completely ridiculous that anyone has to bow and curtesy to the royal family, especially family members. In the unlikely event I were to meet royalty, I’d like to think I wouldn’t do it.

I assumed the same as her, the bowing and scraping was just for show. Once the doors are closed they just relax.

JamSandle · 11/12/2022 12:39

I'm not sure if its because she feels very American. Born in Canada though I think? She just feels very LA and artificial, as if she's a more intelligent Kardashian. Not sure if it's just how she comes across or if it's something deeper but she's always struck me as artificial.

monsteramunch · 11/12/2022 12:47

Not come across anyone who actually supports Andrew. He may come across as a sleazeball but where are all the "many underage girls" he abused? And just to add, he's not trousering millions to smear his family.

He spent millions of pounds (partly financed by the Queen) on a settlement with a woman he claims he never met. So he literally 'trousered millions' from his family to do so rather than allowing the civil case to progress which would have involved a deposition testimony.

It would be interesting to be able to see the ‘stripped down’ her (not literally of course) but the one who doesn’t speak in word salads or buzz words, just ordinary and unaffected. The way she might be if she was on a desert island and there were no cameras and no audience, just a few ordinary fellow humans just trying to get along and survive.

The whole thing is a car crash. Why they are surprised the media has turned on them when they have launched multiple law suits against them is just ridiculous!!!

also the tide seemed to turn on them when she visited a refuge and wrote messages of support on bananas for sex workers!

however being offered 80 million pound is not to be sniffed at

but the whole thing is just a circus I wish they’d all make up so we could stop seeing multiple articles about them everyday!

I'd completely missed that! That's so awful it's almost funny.

cushioncovers · 11/12/2022 12:59

Haven't watched the programme of them but have seen the mock curtesy on TT and I think Harry's expression says it all really. Such a shame they haven't just embraced their royal duties and done some good for others. Perhaps they will donate all the money they get from Netflix to good causes to show that they aren't just money grabbers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

bakalava · 11/12/2022 13:01

I reckon the banana messaging thing was also a mockery of the sex workers having seen the video she put out before the visit while she is writing on the bananas. In the same vein as the curtsey, it is all so funny to her, a ridiculous people ruled by ridiculous people. I will not make the obvious comment about her acting career definitely being at the non-Shakesperian end of the spectrum.

I agree. I thought she was laughing at herself, and while it wasn't a hilarious anecdote, you'd think Harry could have cracked a smile.

Even more interesting that his expression wasn't edited out but was actually in close up.

lollipoprainbow · 11/12/2022 13:14

I always thought the formal part was for show and once behind closed doors they relax, If not why not?

SylviasMotherSaid · 11/12/2022 13:17

I disagree with some of the way they have went about things but I honestly feel she’s not being disrespectful here I think she’s just being self deprecating. I think a lot of people who might have met HM and felt the need to curtsy might have went back to their friends or other half and had a similar type of conversation about how strange the whole thing is . I am a fan of the royals but hopefully this curtsy nonsense stops as it’s so out dated .
