Meghan’s mock curtsy

full Disclosure I am no Meghan fan. However if we don’t try to see people as multifaceted and full of attributes, strengths and weaknesses we will never understand the truth. I honestly believe when she did that mock curtsy she was completely taking the piss out of herself. She says something afterwards such as “ I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing “. I think harry is embarrassed at the dramatic bow and also a bit sad that she is resorting to taking the piss out of herself.

Sorry, I know this is a thread about the curtsy but it is the only one loading for me.

Does anyone know why they were allowed to share private text messages in the documentary but they sued over Meghan’s letter being published?

Tontostitis · 11/12/2022 13:19

Ashamed of nothing offended by everything sums these two up. I think she was mocking the Queen and the custom and herself. Harry looked really embarrassed. I have gone from a huge fan of them both to utter disappointment and I wish they would just go away. They will never win a war against the media, their families, Britain as a whole. And they certainly won't gain from repeatedly lying by omission, saying X then claiming they actually meant Y. They come across fake, manipulative and towards Catherine, downright nasty.

Do you mean the messages between Meghan and her father?

Those are in court documents - I think when they're shown on screen it had a note saying something like "taken from public court documents" or something. The messages have already been widely reported in papers.

'The fact that the royal family can't even be relaxed and warm with each other in private is, frankly, very, very weird.'

But we've seen the RF be affectionate with each other in public, so I'm pretty sure they manage to be relaxed and warm with each other behind closed doors - I'm not sure if the curtsey/bow business is particularly what Meghan was referring to when she was talking about the formality behind closed doors but I think they probably act like any family when they're on their own out of the public gaze - I'm not sure why it would be different?

And there is absolutely no requirement for anyone to bow/curtsey to the monarch if they don't want to - plenty of people don't. Perhaps the Queen's/King's family do it out of love and respect, which is actually quite a nice thing.

Moxbeal · 11/12/2022 13:35

Mocking herself or not, no one else is laughing other than her and she comes across as really stupid in the clip and very immature.

Thousands upon thousands of famous people from all around the world have lined up to meet the Queen and managed to curtsy without making such a song and dance about not knowing how to it "because they're not British." Why? Because it's having basic manners and respect as grown adults and not needing to create a big drama.

Harry's just managed to find someone who feeds into his whole gripe with the RF and it does make you wonder if there'd have been the same pull towards her had she really embraced and enjoyed being part of the RF in the way Kate has. Would Harry have really been happy with that?

Even more interesting that his expression wasn't edited out but was actually in close up.

I agree with you. It's fascinating that the director made Harry's face a focal point. You see a very slight chin jut (anger) and a very mild flushing of the skin (shame or embarrassment) - all very, very controlled from him.

The briefest of smiles appears on his face at the end when he realises she has completed her anecdote and isn't going to go any further with it.

themessygarden · 11/12/2022 13:57

My husband, I, and my kids would be pretty offended if someone, let alone someone in our family, made a disparaging joke, self-deprecating or not, at the expense of our inlaws and grandparents traditions or culture. Whether that be the African side of the family or my side of the family.

Even if we agree curtsying in this day and age is ridiculous, the fact is the queen was almost 100, she is allowed to keep the traditions of the culture she was brought up in.

The comment about the curtsy was not the only comment she made about his family's 'culture',, she was critical of their formality when meeting them for the first time, and likening their Christmas tradition to some faux theme show in the US.

It is pretty jarring to hear someone like Meghan, who has been exposed to racial bias and racism, display that kind of negative bias towards her inlaws and their heritage and even more so when she is of mixed race heritage herself.

PinkTonic · 11/12/2022 14:15

She’s obviously taking the piss because it simply isn’t plausible that an educated adult person couldn’t and wouldn’t equip themselves with the knowledge to manage that situation.

Darcy101 · 11/12/2022 14:16

tempname124 · 11/12/2022 09:38

The fuss over this is absolutely ridiculous. Yes of course she’s just being self-deprecating! Nonsense to act as if she was being disrespectful to the Queen. Our media and society really is full of a lot of hypersensitive pearl clutchers.

Agree!

Wiluli · 11/12/2022 14:20

Hats with all the English folk getting l offended about this ? A curtsy bow is simply silly to anyone outside engalnd and she was simply joking . Lighten up.

bloodyplanes · 11/12/2022 14:23

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/12/2022 10:10

Of course she’s laughing at herself.

would you name your child after someone you disrespected?

such a lot of nonsense for people with too much time on their hands.

Why would you continue to use titles given to you by an " institution/family" you spend your whole time slagging off?

Heliumburgers · 11/12/2022 14:34

I don't like the royal family, they are hypocrites and we would be so much better off putting the money we give them into schools, the NHS, welfare system etc...
But Meghan wants to be a celebrity. The royal family are famous but not celebrities and she didn't really realise that. She wanted a celebrity lifestyle. She's got that again.
I don't think she was taking the pics out of herself, more to be able to point back and say 'poor little me'. Someone who thrives in American celebrity culture was never going to fit in well in Britain, especially with the British royal family. I'm sure Harry would have given her some notes but obviously (whether on purpose or not) decided it was a joke.

DottieUncBab · 11/12/2022 14:50

OldReliable · 11/12/2022 09:50

It's bloody ridiculous that she had to curtsy in the first place. It's 2022.

Who cares if she was mocking the fact she had to curtsy? It's got no place in a modern society.

This exactly!

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 14:59

@OldReliable well she didn't have to she could of not married into the royal family for one ? Its not for her to decide or you for that matter on a tradition in a country , you wouldn't tell another country that they should change their traditions , would you?

Bideshi · 11/12/2022 15:02

Georgeskitchen · 11/12/2022 10:10

Mocking another country's customs ,however bizarre you may think they are, is not really good manners.
Perhaps she should try it in Iran and see how she fares!!

Or have a laugh at the way Americans put their hands over their hearts when the National Anthem is played. That would go down well.
Apart from anything else, the curtsey thing is what the RF do. Themselves. In private.Their choice. Others may think it's silly but it's what they do, like some families kiss, others don't, in some families some sons and fathers kiss whilst in others they shake hands or hug.
I wish they'd stop it now. They're looking foolish and spiteful and they keep saying silly and provably untrue things. It's never good when people start believing their own bullshit.

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 15:02

@WilmaFlintstone1 where is you your proof on that though , loads of girls ? And hes hiding away not making anyone have to listen to him or telling us his story, he knows he isn't liked now so he keeps out of the way mostly.
Only one winner in all this and that will be netflix

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 15:03

@MrsSkylerWhite hes not paid by the taxpayer though ? He lives of family money and not being paid by netflix either

healthadvice123 · 11/12/2022 15:06

@VladmirsPoutine no we think someone should respect our culture maybe as many would expect us to
She didn't have to marry into the royal family and meet the queen
Your often on these threads with your hate against the brits
If it was said about any other nation it would be removed

Reindeersnooker · 11/12/2022 15:07

I agree she was laughing at herself and didn't realise that for Harry, these things are not to be joked about. I do not think for one moment she was making fun of the queen, just trying to depict herself as gauche and clueless in an naive, breath of fresh air kind of way. Taking offense at it says more about the watcher than the speaker and I'm no fan of the speaker.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 15:10

@healthadvice123 I am British. The reason these threads annoy me is because of the unhinged hatred for Meghan. If British culture includes curtsying to a royal family then yes it's ridiculous. It's absurd. Report posts of mine which have broken the talk guidelines.

ScrappyCats · 11/12/2022 15:17

Harry gives her that “look” more than once during the documentary. You see it on a clip of a previous media interview when they are together, at some point much earlier on in their relationship, as he is watching her face while she is talking.

I don’t know what it means. During the curtesy story I thought he was looking at her like that because she was lying or exaggerating what happened, and he knew it. Others interpret it as a look of anger or embarrassment.

Perhaps that facial expression wasn’t even related to the story though but it was edited in that way by the producers, reality tv style.

MusicstillonMTV · 11/12/2022 15:18

I think a lot of American stuff is weird too - the daily pledge of allegiance in schools, treating the Constitution like a sacred text etc - but I married an American so I don't mouth off about it to my in laws

Exactly.
Lets not forget when Harry moved to the US and made a comment that he thought the First Amendment was 'bonkers'. They are both entitled and disrespectful but they will do what needs to be done, inc throwing people under the bus, in order to maintain a luxurious lifestyle.

Cismyfatarse · 11/12/2022 15:37

The thing that constantly surprises me about them is their ages. You would think they were naive early 20s, not 38-41 year olds.

They are both childish and a bit petulant.

Antigonads · 11/12/2022 15:38

Whether anyone thinks curtsying is ridiculous or not, that is what the RF do. Like it or lump it but don’t take the piss out of it. Meghan seems to have been of the opinion that the whole Royal thing was just an act, in which she could have a starring role.

It’s such a shame as they could both have done great work across the Commonwealth.

I can totally understand why they left but wish they would just shut up and live their charmed life.
