The royal family

Meghan’s mock curtsy

full Disclosure I am no Meghan fan. However if we don’t try to see people as multifaceted and full of attributes, strengths and weaknesses we will never understand the truth. I honestly believe when she did that mock curtsy she was completely taking the piss out of herself. She says something afterwards such as “ I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing “. I think harry is embarrassed at the dramatic bow and also a bit sad that she is resorting to taking the piss out of herself.

The woman has a degree in International Relations, so I’m not falling for that nonsense that she had no idea about these things. If I married into the Japanese royal family I’d be pretty bloody ignorant if I had no idea there’d be a lot of bowing involved! (foreigners not actually allowed to join but that’s irrelevant).

I'm conflicted. I don't think the curtesy thing was mocking the queen, I think she was mocking herself and her own lack of understanding. I also have total sympathy for them wanting to break free of the institution and Harry's hatred towards the press who hounded his mother and then did the same to his wife.

Having said this I just don't understand why they didn't go off and lead the quiet life they appeared to want. They could have still done worthwhile charity work but the Netflix series and book deals are just throwing them back into the public eye they so desperately wanted to escape from?

You think Meghan wanted to escape from the public gaze? I can believe that Harry would have but not his wife. She absolutely glows when the focus is on her. Do you ever notice that when the spotlight is on her or she feels it’s her gig she barely notices Harry’s presence but when he is the focus she is all over him like a rash? Just my observation.

Ever meet someone who’s/wants to be an actor and they try to be ‘entertaining’ and it’s just so embarrassing and everyone’s waiting for it to stop? That clip is that; just cringey.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 11/12/2022 10:58

Good God.
She was saying "this is what I, as an American, thought a curtsey to the Queen would be".

KnickerlessParsons · 11/12/2022 11:00

I doubt Meghan has ever taken the piss out of herself. She usually takes herself very seriously.

CoffeeBoy · 11/12/2022 11:04

I agree that I just think it’s a bullshit story. I don’t believe she didn’t know how to curtsey, to have least have an idea that it’s more of a Bob down rather than a theatrical medieval sweep where you stay down for 30 seconds. She may be American but she has not lived under a rock all her life. Maybe she thought it was a joke/funny but I don’t see why you’d lie about it. She seems so fake.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/12/2022 10:10

Of course she’s laughing at herself.

would you name your child after someone you disrespected?

such a lot of nonsense for people with too much time on their hands.

Well I did think it was weird that they did tbe Oprah interview where they slagged off the Royal Family to the entire planet, and then very shortly afterwards used the very intimate nickname of the head of that family for their daughter.

As for the curtsey, maybe it was self deprecating, maybe not. I think it probably was with an undertone of 'and how fucking ridiculous is it that I would have to curtsey to my boyfriends granny anyway'. Especially because she referred to a tacky medieval themed restaurant as well.

LizzieSiddal · 11/12/2022 11:06

She was taking the puss out herself.

The press hate the fact the documented mainly has a huge go at the UK media. So to deflect from this very valid point, the media have twisted many things in the documentary, hoping most people will never actually watch it.

Whatever you think of M&H, the media in this country are awful, they lie, manipulate and generally make life for most people worse . (Brexit, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, would never have happen without the support of most of the UK media and they have made this country poorer).

We as a country should be talking about our media, instead we’re talking about a courtesy.

I don't think M disrespected the queen particularly but Americans don't always do self-deprecation quite as well as we do in the UK so it came off a bit...false.

I reckon they named their DD Lillibet so no-one ever forgets that she is the great-granddaughter of Elizabeth ll!

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 11:07

People really got themselves into a twist over this. She's right! Curtseying to an old woman who is ostensibly royal and called the Queen whatever that means is the height of absurdity. It's ridiculous. Brits think others must revere their pomp and ceremony but to many it just looks like a circus act but with diamonds and rubies.

She may have been just an 'old woman' to you but to her family she was a revered figure as well as 'granny'. You don't ever have to meet a member of the royal family. If you did though I don't think the royal family would care if you curtsied or not. In fact no one much cares what you do at all and that's the bit that stings.

Skinnermarink · 11/12/2022 11:19

I suspect that this was probably one aspect of the show that Harry was keen to be edited out, given that the Queen died about a month after it wrapped filming. He looks really uncomfortable when she does it, and that was when his grandmother was alive.
Netflix were never going to take out Gogglebox gold clips like that though.

Spendonsend · 11/12/2022 11:19

i thought she was mocking herself
And curtseying is odd.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/12/2022 11:20

I saw a critique of her that said it was suspicious that she's always smiling so much. When it comes to Harry and Meghan, and more specifically Meghan people are genuinely unhinged. Completely too far gone. Yes curtseying to an old woman is extremely odd.

name78change · 11/12/2022 11:21

It was Harry's reaction I found weird in that scene, she was clearly being self-deprecating, it was amusing, it was his reaction that made the scene awkward. I don't get why he didn't even smile a bit more, he just seemed to look at her...

allthecrooksandnannies · 11/12/2022 11:21

I honestly felt like he was looking at her like ‘that didn’t happen’

You can dislike all of them

Some perspective please.

Not come across anyone who actually supports Andrew .
He may come across as a sleazeball but where are all the "many underage girls" he abused? And just to add, he's not trousering millions to smear his family

Perhaps do some reading about him, he’s hugely involved in the actions of those who trafficked young women for Epstein, hell he was at a lot of the parties.

Only his title protects him from prosecution.

So some perspective is needed when talking about betrayal of the RF.

BellePeppa · 11/12/2022 11:26

I bet she would bloody love it if people curtseyed to her.

Shootingstarsparkle · 11/12/2022 11:26

Theunamedcat · 11/12/2022 09:46

Is this when she first met the Queen? Because that's not how she told the story before? She said fergie showed her how to courtesy as he had taken them over to visit Andrew and fergie and the Queen came around

Yes that’s what I thought too

Shootingstarsparkle · 11/12/2022 11:29

allthecrooksandnannies · 11/12/2022 11:21

Yes he looked very awkward almost like he was worried about what she was going to say or do next!
