Are Netflix secretly playing Harry and Meghan?

H&M think they are dictating the Netflix narrative, but I wonder if Netflix are actually playing a longer game? This was billed as their story, but they are so tone deaf and are exposing themselves to ridicule with their ham fisted attempts to justify their behaviour. It's so full of ridiculous unsubstantiated statements and generalisations with no evidence to back it up. It's using stock photographs of photographers that have nothing to do with them. Why not show real photographers? A ridiculous car chase with a lone photographer on a moped provoking panic and faux fear in the couple is laughable. And as for Harry's face as Meghan takes the piss out of the queen? This was definitely seen by the editors who chose to leave it in.

Will Netflix get a double helping from this series with the candy-floss fluff that's the first airing, with a second being the dissection of this sad and deluded pair?

It would not surprise me if their security were 1m a year or month

Seems a bit much to protect them from a man on a moped...

Maybe you wouldn't be quite so flippant it was you, your spouse and children receiving racially motivated death threats. Even on 'civilised' Mumsnet I've seen Meghan called the c word and a cockroach just in the past few days.

Anyone can come onto MN had create temporary havoc. It happens at night and the early hours especially. Sometimes it's unusable.

I find this whole argument that they "need" security (and that's obviously what they tout as the reason for all the Netflix deals and so on) a bit ridiculous.

Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie don't have full time security - only while they are on royal engagements. And they are very much in the public eye as full time working royals. And they are as closely related to the monarch - as M&H.

Other grandchildren of the (previous) monarch - eg. Zara, Peter, Eugenie and Beatrice - have no taxpayer funded security whatsoever.

Somehow they all manage to get on and live their lives without a big fuss, and without constant angst that their lives are in incredible danger as a result.

Perhaps M&H do have a level of threat against them, but that will be due in the most part to their ongoing desire for fame and their relentless self promotion. In which case, it's part and parcel of celebrity and you have to fund your own security if that's what you want.

If security really was the key concern, then they could easily have achieved a very comfortable, wealthy life - out of the public eye - and massively reduced their risk.

It's more than that - these are regular posters. Another one who is all over these threads claimed a couple of days that due to her 'links with the Kennedys' Meghan wants to start a race war in the UK and finished by telling everyone to go and google it.
Way to miss the point anyway which was the need for security.

Aspiringmatriarch · 12/12/2022 15:05

Oh yes @elessar the good old 'go away and be quiet' argument. No reason they should have to.

Of course not, but then they have to accept that their security needs are as a result of their personal desire to be high profile celebrities, and very to do with "inherited risk" due to Harry's proximity to the royal family.

Of course they won't admit that because it doesn't play with their victim narrative and image of humble philanthropists that they try to portray.

*very little

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/12/2022 15:10

Could Harry not increase his hours? Take in some ironing?

It's OK, they're still living off the engagement chicken 😆

JustSouthofSaltzburg · 12/12/2022 15:12

I don't think they came across badly, it was all just a bit boring. I didn't learn anything new really. I thought it was cringey to rehash that dishsoap advert again. I agree it is made for a US audience - that sort of self praise and self promotion doesn't go down as well in the UK.

It was going over all the same ground of previous interviews just with added photos and video snippets.

It felt like one of those US made for TV gushing celebrity bios.

I think that they unfortunately don't bring out the best in each other. Meghan really plays into Harry's paranoia. The bit in the car was very sad. Do they really have paps following them in California? I mean when they turned up to the UN etc. for that speech there was hardly anyone there. I can't think why paps would be following them.

I think you have it backwards. Harry has always had a high profile and that increased when he got married, when they left as working royals it's not like they suddenly became Mr and Mrs Bloggs is it?

Whether they want to be celebrities or not, they are, and the things they do whether that's something philanthropic, which is clearly important to both of them, or earning money, will be in the public eye by the nature of who they are. The need for security exists and will continue for the foreseeable future regardless of whether you think they court the publicity - they are simply that high profile.

ArcaneWireless · 12/12/2022 15:31

Well with all the wolves about, they actually should be worried about security.

Not for them.

But for the chickens.

He could retrain as a plumber. He's having problems with his pipes so this seems a perfect time to learn.
Or he likes juggling, how about retraining as a circus clown...oh wait, looks like he already did that.

jeffgoldblum · 12/12/2022 15:44

So Big interview.
Podcasts.
Netflicks.
Book.
Now they have done so many tell all's, their fame has not sky rocket to mega bucks. They are not bringing in the money.
So what will they do next? I mean they have aired it all , there is no really rebuttals from the UK. So they can't really keep the heat up , as no kindling to feed the fire and it is becoming common place that H&M are on another wingefest. Even at both Funerals there was no real fodder for them to use.

Bugeyedowl

Her frame of reference was "Medieval Times", not sure what that is, a TV show?

You'd think she'd know about "yore" as in "days of yore" too.
Or, you know, "yesteryear".

Maybe she didn't watch "Friends" though.

Loved that episode. I need an apothecary's table.

In the UK, security is easier to manage. A quiet retreat in the Scottish Highlands? Sorted!

Just watched the trailer 2 - Jeez how many I want and we wants are in that. Yeah we all just want to live our lives and be happy and not flipping work! As for Harry and his "Freedom Flight" - from a former military person that is a disgusting and selfish comment. He has gone so low.

I know, @debbrianna. It's like wasn't that movie just released 5 years ago? And then that awful realisation that it's us that are old. 🤤 😁

Bugeyedowl · 12/12/2022 14:27

Agree. People say the H&M are rich whiners (maybe true to an extent) but conveniently forget that Diana also "whined" (it could be said) on TV. The most uber privileged woman of the 80s complained about press intrusion, her marriage, the royal family conspiring against her etc etc. Why was that OK then? That was far more explosive than what we've seen so far of H&M.

As for the curtsey, I think some are very deliberately misinterpreting the scene. Meghan was clearly making fun of herself, she didn't realise that curtseying was a Real Thing, she didn't know that she was going to have to do it, or how to do it. Her frame of reference was "Medieval Times", not sure what that is, a TV show? But anyway she was mocking herself for her over-the-top, flowery way of curtseying. She definitely did not mock the Queen. Harry looked like he was cringeing for sure, but maybe he was. He should have taught her how to do it!

She was referring to a modern day dinner event based on a medieval banquet, where the people all dress in costumes. Been there etc. So Meghan refers to the ridiculousness of real life mimicing these (rather tacky but fun) events and her actually having to curtsey/bow to a living person, in a serious real life situation. She was mocking that, the institution that has bowing and curtseying as part of its rituals. She's right in a way. They are outdate and need to go. However they were there at the time in deference to the Queen who had served her country for 70 years. It simply shows respect to the queen and the monarchy. Meghan was mocking all of it. Harry (Meghans biggest cheerleader) looked so uncomfortable and embarrassed, he saw it as mocking the monarchy. So does most of the people who watched it if you are to believe all the media coverage. Feel free to disagree, but you are in a minority.
