Can Charles remove Harry's 'prince' title

gottogo23 · 10/12/2022 12:47

I've noticed that the Removal of Titles Bill is going through Parliament and people have been talking a lot about Harry and Meghan losing their titles. Does this just refer to the Duke and Duchess titles, or does this also include stripping Harry of being a prince?

I wish they could, surely his behaviour is treason?!

I also wonder if they can remove him from the line succession instead, surely the current situation makes the royal family unstable if something happened to William and his family.

TroysMammy · 10/12/2022 14:08

I've mentioned this on another thread, they will be titled Prince and Princess Henry of Wales. Sussex will be happy but I for one would be disgusted they will be linked to Wales. Why should we have them?

stuntbubbles · 10/12/2022 14:10

Treason! 😂😂😂

I’m going to need to recalibrate my batshit-o-meter.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/12/2022 14:13

As things stand now, the King can remove HRH and Prince/Princess, but not Duke and Duchess. Only Parliament can remove the peerage.

I expect if that happened she'd be all smiles and light and embrace it like a fly to shit.

A lot of this bad feeling seems to be caused because she doesn't want to play second fiddle.

Imo.

DisforDarkChocolate · 10/12/2022 14:23

I can't imagine Charles doing this, it goes against the whole born Royal continuity shit. If he decides to do this it might give the rest of us ideas about royalty in general and how easy it is to get rid of.

EdithWeston · 10/12/2022 14:23

I hadn't spotted that - it's a Private Member's Bill (put forward by a Labour MP) "a Bill to give the Monarch powers to remove titles; to provide that such removals can be done by the Monarch on their own initiative or following a recommendation of a joint committee of Parliament; and for connected purposes"

Private Member's Bills rarely make it into law - this one is on its Second Reading. Any Hansard nerds know if there was much debate?

Titles will mean peerages.

Not royal styles of HRH Prince/ss which are in the monarch's gift anyway (done by Letters Patent)

Theunamedcat · 11/12/2022 09:54

Diana had her HRH removed can he do that to Harry? would he ever do that to his son? He is an emotional man so spite is possible

Rather an extreme solution, I feel.

Blueroses99 · 11/12/2022 10:34

The private members bill originally came about in response to the people of York wanting to remove the dukedom of York from Prince Andrew. However it is generic so, if successful, could also be used on the Sussexes.

They would not become Prince and Princess Henry of WALES because William is now the Prince of Wales and only his children are ‘of Wales’. Harry would become The Prince Henry and his wife The Princess Henry.

There is precedence of removing Prince and Princess titles, though you have to go back to pre-1917 in the UK. Most recently Queen Margethe of Denmark removed titles from her younger son’s children who were all born as Princes and Princess. So it can be done.

I think removing the titles would help to stunt their ability to exploit and talk about the royal family, as less people would be interested in interviewing plain old Meghan, as opposed to the more interestingly named 'Duchess of Sussex'. In reference to you saying we've got better things to worry about. Of course we do! That's the case with the vast majority of things we talk about. There's always something worse.

You think? They sell papers and generate huge amounts of content – add “the racist royals stripped us of our titles for speaking out” and that’s the next news wave.

And she’s always Meghan Markle/Megxit/Meghan in headlines (“Meghan of Montecito”), the Netflix doc title, Twitter trending topics, etc – no one’s googling “Duchess of Sussex” the same way even decades on everyone (except the batshit “Catherine” boot-lickers) calls Kate Middleton, Kate Middleton, not the Princess of Wales. The only time I see Meghan’s title used is when she’s branded Duchess Difficult (see also: Princess Pushy). Removing the title doesn’t make her less headline-worthy: it makes her more so.

DuchessOfPort · 11/12/2022 11:25

I dont care about their titles but if what the ex police commissioner says is true about threat levels being raised against the Wales and their three children, removing the Sussexes and their children from the line of succession makes total sense. Then there is no benefit to a crazed H&M stan blowing up Anmer on Boxing Day or whatever.

DuchessOfPort · 11/12/2022 11:28
  • not ex commissioner; former head of Royal protection and police commander.
PeaceJoySleep · 11/12/2022 11:28

I don't think he will because it sets a very dangerous precedent in an age where nearly (?) half the population wants to get ridof the monarchy. The last thing he's going to do is create a situation where UNpopular royals are UNroyaled. It's just never going to happen.

And it'd be pointless anyway, if the D&D titles were taken, Meghan would call herself Princess H or something, so a princess, to most people outside of the UK that's a promotion.

Samcro · 11/12/2022 11:29

if they remove the Duke, he will just be prince Harry and princess Harry(but called princess meghan) so won't the haters love that. can't un prince him.

I suppose the problem is, if their titles are taken away and it does reduce their ability to make money then they may be more at risk from the public. I read somewhere (no idea if it's true) that they need to make 9 million a year just for their security. So he may run out of enough money to keep his family safe.

I suppose the other thing to acknowledge is that being in the US, he is unlikely to ever visit Sussex or be able to represent them, so why would he need such a title. The King may as well take it back.

Can’t see her preferring to be Princess Henry rather than Duchess of Sussex. (Although it wouldn’t stop people referring to her as Princess Megan)

Duke and Duchess. Can't remove the Prince title unfortunately

Charles can’t remove it personally, but an act of parliament can have harry have all titles removed, inc the prince title, and it’s not a difficult act of parliament to pass either. Since most of them are baying for it. And if Charles wants it then both houses will pass it. They won’t interfere.

Kinneddar · 11/12/2022 11:35

If their Sussex titles were removed could he be Prince Harry & her just Meghan Windsor. Does she just get Princess Henry by default. Eugenie & Beatrice's husbands have no titles - I know they can't be Princes because they'd outrank their wives, but could that apply to H&M thar he has a title, she doesn't

I dont think they deserve the titles but if the only alternative is to make them Prince Harry & Princess Henry I can see that making the pair of them even worse

Abraxan · 11/12/2022 11:36

Can't see them removing it.

Let's face it, Andrew still has his prince title and his behaviour has been far worse than anything Harry has done tbh.
