Can Charles remove Harry's 'prince' title

I've noticed that the Removal of Titles Bill is going through Parliament and people have been talking a lot about Harry and Meghan losing their titles. Does this just refer to the Duke and Duchess titles, or does this also include stripping Harry of being a prince?

I think removing the titles would help to stunt their ability to exploit and talk about the royal family, as less people would be interested in interviewing plain old Meghan, as opposed to the more interestingly named 'Duchess of Sussex'.

🤣🤣🤣 yeah removing their titles would instantly remove the interest in them. This is one of those statements of 'what I want to happen' rather than 'what is likely to happen.'

Ignoring the fact that most call them 'Harry and Meghan' anyways - which is also the title of their Netflix show, of course.

HappinesDependsOnYou · 11/12/2022 11:49

I think the bill was drawn up in response to the Duke of York but the press have linked it to Megan and Harry. I doubt Megan and Harry will be stripped of their titles but Andrew should be of all of his

If their Sussex titles were removed could he be Prince Harry & her just Meghan Windsor. Does she just get Princess Henry by default. Eugenie & Beatrice's husbands have no titles - I know they can't be Princes because they'd outrank their wives, but could that apply to H&M thar he has a title, she doesn't

I dont think they deserve the titles but if the only alternative is to make them Prince Harry & Princess Henry I can see that making the pair of them even worse

The Sussex titles will need to be removed. I think this will happen. The prince title could be removed, but I’m not sure they will go that far.

I feel sorry for Charles, I never thought I’d say that, but I do. His coronation is coming up and harry and Meghan will want to be there, but Charles will be under pressure not to allow them,

right now he will be thinking what’s best for the monarchy v the fact it’s his son, but anything he does do, harry could retaliate even worse. As a parent, I think this must be very hard for him,

bakalava · 11/12/2022 12:08

I don't think Harry should lose his Prince title but all the other titles and the HRH should be removed. There should also be something added to say that non-blood royals will lose their title upon divorce.

ICanHideButICantRun · 11/12/2022 12:09

Can you imagine if Edward and Mrs Simpson had had access to social media in the same way?

I've mentioned this on another thread, they will be titled Prince and Princess Henry of Wales. Sussex will be happy but I for one would be disgusted they will be linked to Wales. Why should we have them?

No they won’t, that is the title for William.- Prince of Wales. That’s the title the heir to the throne gets.

Harry is just a Prince of England by birth.

Neither Kate nor Meghan are Princesses. You can’t get that title by marriage, only by birth.

Beanbagtrap · 11/12/2022 12:19

Surely if you can remove titles then you can give them to people who are elected too? Slippery slope for the royals!

Eh? Whaaat?! That can’t be right!

Exactly! I'm surprised how many royalists are up for this. You either want an hereditary system, or you don't - if you pick and choose which royals 'deserve' titles it defeats the whole point surely?

Acheyknees · 11/12/2022 12:25

I hope Charles doesn't remove their titles. If he did, we'd surely be subjected to another 6 episodes of series 2 dealing with the injustice of it. I never got over Harry's complaint of being financially cut of by his father at the age of 36!

darkwinterdays · 11/12/2022 12:25

As things stand now, the King can remove HRH and Prince/Princess, but not Duke and Duchess. Only Parliament can remove the peerage.

I am fairly sure William would remove the HRH titles if he could, King C must be tempted. Parliament appears pretty unimpressed with these two at the moment as well.

tbh, it may do H&M a favour, they seem to really dislike their families (apart from the perks it brings) that cutting them loose may help them move on and become a bit happier with their lives.

Diana had her HRH removed can he do that to Harry? would he ever do that to his son? He is an emotional man so spite is possible

She wasn't blood royal. He is.

Treason! 😂😂😂

I’m going to need to recalibrate my batshit-o-meter.

Me too 😂😂😂

Mumsnut · 11/12/2022 13:01

Just doing nothing is the best solution.

RudsyFarmer · 11/12/2022 13:02

I was thinking treason too. His head would have been on a spike a few hundred years ago.

Mumsnut · 11/12/2022 13:05

(The attainder thing was a joke, guys)

HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed · 11/12/2022 13:09

This thread is a lot of fun. Treason?!!!!!!! FFS.

My wider family are also very dysfunctional, but we all agree that the family are mad and just don't talk to one another. I love that what is little more than the same level of petty nonsense in my own family has become a national scandal with lunatics online accusing Harry- angry with his crap dad, dickhead brother etc for good reason- of fucking treason.

Get a life, they wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire. Abolish the monarchy and let's end all this nonsense now.

Neither Kate nor Meghan are Princesses. You can’t get that title by marriage, only by birth.

Actually they are both entitled to use the title Princess - but they'd be Princess William and Princess Henry (think Princess Michael of Kent). Women who marry a man with a title automatically take the female form of the title (Duchess, Countess, Vicountess, lady etc).

Interestingly, the monarch as the power to confer the title Princess or Prince - Prince Philip was created a Prince of the United Kingdom (he gave up his Greek titles on marriage), and the late queen conferred the title Princess Alice, the wife of the late Duke of Gloucester and mother of the present DofG.

Yes, for the lesser non-royal titles you get them by marriage. But the title of Prince or Princess if not acquired at birth has to be conferred on you by the monarch (as you have pointed out). You can’t get it upon marrying a Prince or Princess. Because it’s a royal title, it’s a step above a normal aristocratic title.

Hollywood films are to blame for people thinking you can be a Princess by marrying a Prince.

Kate & Meghan are both Prince consort, not “Princess William and Princess Harry”

00100001 · 11/12/2022 13:39

Princess Henry*

maximist · 11/12/2022 13:40

From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_princess -

George V issued Letters Patent on 30 November 1917,[1] to restrict the automatic assignment of the title "Princess" and the use of the style "Royal Highness" to the following persons:
• the legitimate daughters of a British sovereign,
• the legitimate male line granddaughters of a British sovereign,
• the wife of a British prince.[2][3]

Have a read of the link, it's interesting.

Kate and Meghan are Princess William and Princess Henry. Just as Sophie is Princess Edward.

wives take their husband’s titles - like Princess Michael of Kent. There’s no difference in Dukedoms or princely titles in terms of the wives - they take the female form of their husbands totles. To be titled Princess YourFirstName, rather than Princess HusbandsName, you have to be born royal or have the title conferred.

Princess Alice wasn’t actually created Princess Alice as a title in its own right. She was allowed by the Queen to use the style HRH Princess Alice instead of using HRH Dowager Duchess of Gloucester. This was done because the Queen had allowed her other aunt Princess Marina to do the same when she was widowed young, rather than be styled HRH Dowager Duchess of Kent. Princess Marina was a Greek Princess prior to her marriage so was allowed to use that because it was nicer, the Queen extended the same courtesy to Princess Alice despite her not being a Princess prior to marriage.

JustLyra · 11/12/2022 13:42

Consort is only applicable to the spouse of the monarch. Not other titles.

Hobbesmanc · 11/12/2022 13:48

It's some bonkers right wing Tory trying to make a name for himself as A rent a gob or GB News pundit

It's 2022. I can't believe people are posting seriously about treason. Total battiness. You can't punish them like naughty corgis. Or you bring into question hereditary monarchy which wouldn't be a bad thing. .

PeaceJoySleep · 11/12/2022 13:50

They need 9 million a year for security??
Wow. If that's true they need to move to a much smaller house (which wouldcstill be ten times as big/nice as my own), get jobs that don't require trading off their titles, give back the titles voluntarily (?) and just enjoy living a still very privileged life.

They make things hard for themselves.
