The royal family

Can we now agree the press coverage about MM was racist?

Only comment if you've seen the Harry and Meghan documentary because only in that programme did I become aware of the headlines.

If you've seen this programme specifically the images of some of the headlines and STILL don't think some of the press coverage was racist then quite frankly you're part of the problem.

I quote, she has 'exotic DNA', Harry marries a ''gangstar' and 'she is from Crenshaw where they have xxx crime rates last year' (she wasn't even from Crenshaw), 'straight outta Compton'

Seriously, do you seriously think this would have been said about a blonde hair blue eyed women?

For the record, I'm not a H&M fan at all - you don't have to like them to see that the headlines were racist, why can't brits just admit and agree on this?

@jamoncrumpets what work? Tell me. Because I said person of colour instead of black. This is what stirs the pot.
I am not denying there is racism towards her from the media and it's disgusting. But I can one hundred per cent tell you I don't have a racist bone in my body and the fact I am being told I have work to do because I said person of colour is stirring things up.

You aren't anti racist. Because you refuse to acknowledge the obvious bias and several hundred micro aggressions committed towards MM. So yes, you do have a racist bone in your body.

ClannadSinger · 10/12/2022 21:45

@jamoncrumpets committed by whom? The press and media. I believe I have acknowledged that. Re-read

Qazwsxefv · 10/12/2022 21:56

@jamoncrumpets not all non white people
are black. It’s not the only ethic group to be in a minority in the UK. BAME is also problematic - why is black first and separate? If we’re going by pure numbers then it should be “Asian/British Asian and minority ethnic”

why do I care? My DD is British Asian (50% genetically Indian) - she came home from school upset that she is “racist” because she referred to herself as “POC” and then “Indian” rather than black in a citizenship lesson. She now insists she is racially black - which is imo not true as her skin colour is nearly as light as mine and she has near zero African inheritance. It’s not binary.

@debbrianna
I think examples of racism can be both direct and indirect, subtle and less subtle. Clearly there are examples where racism has been exhibited both in the past and present - I just don't believe that the treatment of MM was racist. I believed like many that when she married it would be a happy ever after story. I think it is sad that now the couple seem to be estranged from both their families

realmsofglory · 10/12/2022 22:49

he press absolutely lapped Meghan up until she broke with royal protocol and used her position as a soapbox .That press conference about the Royal Foundation was when the tide began to turn against her.r I think she didn't understand, or did not want to understand how restrictive being a senior royal would be.She thought it was the same as being a celebrity. Not researching British culture and royal protocol was her downfall
.She was happy to play along for the faitytale wedding but did not want to be so restricted long term. This racism bollocks is a way to quit without losing face

sausage767 · 10/12/2022 22:49

Could SOMEONE please link to some of this veritable avalanche of racist press articles - other than the same three or four?

No? Nothing?

sausage767 · 10/12/2022 22:51

Roussette · 10/12/2022 20:00

But really... it is very well hidden but it is there. Not everyone, but more people than you realise.

It was obviously very well hidden from YOU if you can’t quote any examples.

jamoncrumpets · 10/12/2022 21:32

The documentary showed people being happy for them at length. Maybe you just ignored that bit.

Jamoncrumpets I was agreeing with you (and replying to someone else!)

I knew exactly how this thread was going to go.

FurAndFeathers · 11/12/2022 01:14

ClannadSinger · 10/12/2022 09:44

The press coverage was racist. However the public wasn't and isn't racist towards her. Everyone loved her at first. The animosity from the British public now has nothing to do with her skin colour.

So @ClannadSinger you’re suggesting the press is entirely independent of the public?
interesting!

how does that financial model work?

Notatallanamechange · 11/12/2022 01:28

NaturalBae · 11/12/2022 00:47

Google is your friend.

This is what astounds me on this conversation. ‘Google is your friend’, ‘Do your own research’ etc have widely been derided the last few years here, mainstream media and social media as an answer conspiracy theorists give when they can’t substantiate their nonsense. So why is this now a valid answer in this?

I believe there was racism towards Meghan, I was a fan of hers and thought she was a breath of fresh air. Now I’m absolutely spent with the pair of them. And no, I don’t read the rag that is the DM or any of the other crappy tabloids. I’m a grown adult and my decision has been influenced by their crappy attitudes, lies, attention seeking and Kardashian-esque style selling their lives to make money. Use your damn talents.

I have googled, still nothing.

debbrianna · 11/12/2022 07:45

I think the more minor things that have built up are harder to find because the general media pays less attention to them. For example Angela levin talking about Meghan's skin colour a month or so ago. That was racist.

I am not doing your work for you. Do you expect me to sit and sweep up all the negative articles about Meghan with subtle racism in, for you? You won't believe it anyway.

It depends what you are looking for doesn't it. yes, Angela Levin and her disgusting tweet about Meghan's skin colour. And saying she was on the Ellen show 'eating like a chimp'

If you don't want to see the racism, you won't

bagthoughts · 11/12/2022 09:20

I also forgot about the Danny Baker chimp photo, Remember that one? People conveniently forget that

Yes, and posters asking us to provide articles and links... it doesn't work like that. Because it's out there, and if you are determined to believe that it doesn't exist, it doesn't matter how much information you provide, it will always be discounted as one offs. Well.. there's been a helluva lot of one offs!

I remember the photo & it was horrendous but it absolutely wasn't Danny Boyle. Can't remember the guys name, but please get your post corrected as that's a terrible thing to say about Danny Boyle as IT WASNT HIM!

I agree and people expect these to be held in a folder for when they need racist examples that isn't "almost straight out of Compton" . Do people actually think in this racist world, those would be the only examples? Mind boggles!

debbrianna · 11/12/2022 09:29

Mind you, the Angela comment came after she got a book-writing deal for queen Camila.
