The royal family

Can we now agree the press coverage about MM was racist?

Only comment if you've seen the Harry and Meghan documentary because only in that programme did I become aware of the headlines.

If you've seen this programme specifically the images of some of the headlines and STILL don't think some of the press coverage was racist then quite frankly you're part of the problem.

I quote, she has 'exotic DNA', Harry marries a ''gangstar' and 'she is from Crenshaw where they have xxx crime rates last year' (she wasn't even from Crenshaw), 'straight outta Compton'

Seriously, do you seriously think this would have been said about a blonde hair blue eyed women?

For the record, I'm not a H&M fan at all - you don't have to like them to see that the headlines were racist, why can't brits just admit and agree on this?

JRHartley72 · 10/12/2022 11:17

100% yes. And it still is.

Christmaslover2022 · 10/12/2022 11:17

Yes some of it was, and unnecessary! Most of the issue is the media and the fact that the royal family don't do anything about it, its just get on with it. And her family members betrayed her.

Some things weren't that they commented on imo, such as 'first mixed race person to marry in to the Royal family', that's a fact. And it was a positive thing, well it was by most things I read, people were excited that the royal fanily were getting with the times and that she was different.

debbrianna · 10/12/2022 11:22

The press was racist and most of the public, as we believe, weren't. How, however, I think the media dictates how the pubic feels and drives up hate, and more people start to feel the hate.

My biggest one I stand by it is that people didn't see her as black. When people claim we loved her until after the wedding, I think the wedding was very significant in this. This was the moment every realised she was really black because it was the most non-white royal wedding this country had ever seen. And for the first time at a royal wedding, black people were seen and heard, not just meeting quotas.

So yes, the possibility of I loved her before and now not is because blackness was not in their faces .

And of course there are people who just don't like her becuase they don't.

debbrianna · 10/12/2022 11:28

I also think there is love from the public for harry, and it does not extend to Meghan. From day one, the threads on here have proven it. There was nothing she could do. The hate also rampped up after the engagement. I remember it was so bad I had a user name as along the line of "love Harry and meghan" just to piss people off.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 10/12/2022 11:35

It’s all really sad
I agree the straight out of Compton was racist
I think the Danny Baker thing was also racist
He meant it to be about class but was an absolute moron to not realise how racist it was

A lot of British public were thrilled at the wedding but it all seems to have gone really sour
I think it’s a real shame Harry and Meghan never acknowledged that people were so happy for them - it feels like instead of some elements of the press we are as a country the problem

Harry has never said one positive thing about Britain which is so odd after being in the army - no wonder Meghan feels the same
we have all been lumped in with the racist press

looking from the outside it seems hideous that to make money you have to sell your soul
The winners here are not Harry and Meghan

The notorious Mail article is still available online.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3896180/Prince-Harry-s-girlfriend-actress-Meghan-Markles.html

EXCLUSIVE: Harry's girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed - so will he be dropping by for tea?

.Prince Harry's new girl, Suits star Meghan Markle, is from Crenshaw, LA
.Crenshaw has endured 47 crimes in the past week - including murder
.Gangs, including the Bloods, count the neighborhood as their territory
.Markle' social worker mom, Doria Ragland, lives in the run-down area
.And the actress's aunt, Ava Burrow, is in nearby gang-afflicted Inglewood

By RUTH STYLES IN LOS ANGELES FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

PUBLISHED: 04:41, 2 November 2016 | UPDATED: 00:04, 10 January 2020

I'm aware that reporters don't write headlines but Ruth Styles, straight outta LA, did write this:

Plagued by crime and riddled with street gangs, the troubled Los Angeles neighborhood that Doria Ragland, 60, calls home couldn’t be more different to London’s leafy Kensington.

But social worker Ragland might now find herself welcoming a royal guest to downtrodden Crenshaw after Prince Harry was revealed to be dating her daughter - Suits actress Meghan Markle.

Absolutely vile. As pp have said: look at the race snobbery, the social snobbery and the misogyny. The Mail didn't have to run with this heap of crap journalism from LA or add those awful headlines.

custardbear · 10/12/2022 11:42

There were some racist headlines.

However, it's not racist to make comments on her behaviours, which are dreadful no matter what race you are!

BedTaker · 10/12/2022 11:45

Magnoliamarigold · 10/12/2022 10:09

I just hate the fact it has to be so binary.

Yes she was subject to vile racism and she married into a stuffy stuck up institution. I like how in the documentary they use people like Afua Hirsch to make the social commentary about black Britain and colonial legacies. It is important we use this context.

But yes she is also a pain in the arse, Californian huggy huggy moaner who is crying woe betide me in her mansion while teachers and nurses use food banks.

This!

Both things can be true, and I think they are.

Reservoirbogs · 10/12/2022 09:55

The press coverage was racist. However the public wasn't and isn't racist towards her

Except for all the vile social media comments and comments on the racist articles? Death threats etc

No wonder they left, I think they did the right thing. Good luck to them.

And no OP, I don't read the tabloids so had no idea until I watched the Netflix show. I actually hadn't realised just how prevalent racism is in England, seeing that footage of the brexit rallies was shocking, although the vote should have been a giveaway I guess.

Do you live in Britain?

Georgeskitchen · 10/12/2022 11:56

The brexit vote was about taking back control of our laws and controlling immigration, not banning it. Since H&M have smeared a good proportion of the British public for what was a DEMOCRATIC VOTE, perhaps us taxpayers should be asking for our 31 million smackers which we forked out or their wedding back?

Liorae · 10/12/2022 11:58

Harry has never said one positive thing about Britain which is so odd after being in the army
Actually I think that would explain a lot. I think you would learn a lot about racism and classism in the army, though it might have taken him some time to process it.

RelaxedPigeon · 10/12/2022 11:59

ClannadSinger · 10/12/2022 09:44

The press coverage was racist. However the public wasn't and isn't racist towards her. Everyone loved her at first. The animosity from the British public now has nothing to do with her skin colour.

Exactly this.

Norriscolesbag · 10/12/2022 12:02

I’d say there was more social snobbery going on and anti-Americanism from the media than racism. There was the odd piece that was racist but most was favorable. Not that it makes any of the racist examples ok!

I agree with the public not being racist towards her. Of course there will have been the odd racist nutter mouthing off then and now but fortunately they are in the minority. The public generally really liked her and embraced her at the start and it seems so wrong to accuse them of being racist now.

They never asked you to pay for it. as long as you continue to fund the royal family, you have no right to dictate how they spend the money. It's delusional to think that you can.

sausage767 · 10/12/2022 12:09

The same four racist articles quoted over and over again, yes.

Out of probably tens of thousands of articles published about Harry and Meghan.

Have you read PM articles and tweets, Sarah vine and the ITV one that comes to mind about Meghan being Umpity. Don't come and lady hussey us on this thread.

You may as well save your breath. All of the British media are racist and all British people are racist.

It's like talkng to the TWAW crew: completely pointless

NaturalBae · 10/12/2022 12:49

All racist. All of it. And loads of MN posters were shamelessly and disgustingly racist by posting awful things about M whilst painting H as a saint. Let’s see if any of those same posters still feel the same after watching the Netflix shows. Most of them would have changed their MN usernames since and wouldn’t dream of admitting that they are insecure and fearful of people that they do not identify with.

Racist people hate being called out for being racist.
And the other haters are just uneducated sheep who were gaslit and are still allowing themselves to be gaslit by the hateful British Press.

The delusion and gaslighting is real and is clearly continues re. some ignorant people. The Unconscious Bias and the ‘othering’ of people is real all over MN and social media in general.

I heard that Piers Morgan is now posting half dressed photos of his Wife from years ago, in order to prove that he is not salty as a result of M ignoring him around the time that M met H 🤣 An attempt to prove that his relentless, obsessed and stalker style vitriol against M is not based in racism 😑

I’m glad the British Press and ‘some’ racist British people are getting called out.

I’m just hoping that some positivity and re-education of the masses in regard to Britain’s history (empire, Colonialism/slavery, etc) takes place after all of this has been ‘clearly’ exposed for exactly what it is.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/12/2022 12:50

Of course it was.

No, just the same three or four articles trotted out as proof of the racist press.

Itsoktogiveup · 10/12/2022 12:58

Treacletoots · 10/12/2022 09:48

Of course it was and I'm delighted that someone finally had the means, and bravery to call them out on it.

I think the tabloids are the source of most of the current shit we have in society today, racism, misogyn, homophobia, xenophobia and if they were shut down tomorrow the world wouldn't miss them/would be a much better place

This. The British tabloids do an incredible job of spreading hate and division, I wish the government had the courage to regulate the press better.

ItsRainingCatsAndDogsAgain · 10/12/2022 12:59

Of course much of it was racist and still is. Many of us realised that long before the docuseries. It's quite the tantrum some of them are having now, having been called out on it in the full glare of Netflix publicity. They are seething. Methinks they protest too much.

ScotlandEuropa · 10/12/2022 13:01

It was racist. She’s still an arsehole. The two do not cancel each other out.

username8888 · 10/12/2022 13:11

The exotic dna remark is taken out of context and was intended to be complementary and was more disparaging of Harry's pale skin and ginger hair. On reflection the author of it regrets her choice of words, but is it really that bad? MM herself say the british press used the 'n' word in relation to archie, which is actually illegal and didn't happen. www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3909362/RACHEL-JOHNSON-Sorry-Harry-beautiful-bolter-failed-Mum-Test.html

The daily mail seems to be the chief culprit and I really don't know why they had to do this. A palace spokesperson did speak out on their behalf, but that wasn't good enough. I don't like M&H but press coverage in this country is a disgrace. Not just on racial issues but many others too. It needs cleaning up for sure. However the internet is appalling and I have seen some hidious comments there. The internet is a pile of shit when it comes to tearing people down, but its not just race, its suicide, anorexia, body shaming and on and on.
